Aramis to miss SF series

Citing family matters back in the Dominican Republic, Aramis Ramirez will miss the next three games for the Cubs. From the Sun-Times (pops):

An injury-depleted Cubs roster takes another hit this week when cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez takes the next three games off to tend to family matters back home in the Dominican Republic. Ramirez originally asked for four days off but was told he could take three.

He is to rejoin the team Thursday for the finale of a four-game series in San Francisco. The loss of the team's RBI leader couldn't come at a worse time for a Cubs team reeling from a three-game sweep by the White Sox that left them with their first four-game losing streak and eight losses in their last 12 games.

Not good news, but hopefully Rami will be back soon. Hope things are well!!

According to the article, DeRosa and Cedeno will man 3B while he's out.

For mine, as a rule of thumb,

1. If it’s in a game thread, all links except overflow threads will open in a new window.
2. On other threads, if the link goes to page on BCB (FanShot, FanPost, etc.), then it will open in the same window.
3. If I’m linking to an external site not on BCB, it will open in a new window.

I'm going to have two sad boys tomorrow.

Family first…no question, I get it. But A-Ram is our family favorite and I bought 4 tix for both Monday and Wednesday’s games. With the skid the Cubs are on, and the big stick out of the line-up, hopefully D Lee will show off for some friends and family visiting from Sacramento. I’ve been running it pretty good this year here in the north bay giving hell to all the Giant fans. Here’s to the boys catching fire out west like they did earlier in the season! Losing A Ram for three is a killer :-(

Not good news

and likely the reason he wasn’t playing well this week. Here’s hoping all goes well for him in the DR.

Ronny at 2nd?

Probably, although...

Right, which would

necessarily put Ronny at third, as neither Theriot nor Fontenot have the arm for it.

So it will take A-Ram's personal problems in the DR

as well as Patterson’s struggles and Johnson’s injury, to get Matt Murton a start in LF with Soriano out long term. Got it!

With injuries as they are, the depth chart gets interesting:

LF – DeRosa – Murton – Patterson? – Ward?
RF – Fukudome – DeRosa – Ward – Murton
3B – DeRosa – Cedeno
2B – DeRosa – Fontenot – Cedeno – Patterson

Against a LHP like Zito today, do we see –
LF – Murton
CF – Edmonds
RF – Fukudome
3B – Cedeno
SS – Theriot
2B – DeRosa
Or does DeRosa take 3B and Cedeno 2B?

Against SF’s RHPs, how does it shake out?
Does Lou put Ward in LF to help replace Aramis’ power? And if DeRosa takes 3B, who is higher on Lou’s depth chart for 2B – Fontenot or Patterson?

I agree.

I suspect this distraction had a lot to do with Ramírez’s mediocrity this weekend.

With this depleted lineup I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Cardinals on top of the division Sunday night.

by Fraggin Judge on Jun 30, 2008 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I would be surprised

I look for the Cubs to come out fired up tonight. I think Lilly goes 6+ in a quality start, and the Cubs score a bunch. The first rally will relax them; I’m thinking 5th, but hoping for sooner.

Of course, what the hell do I know, but it sounds good!

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 30, 2008 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Nice

I like the positive attitude but the reality of a lineup that will more likely include Cedeno, Fontenot and Murton doesn’t really elicit those thoughts out of me. Not to be pessimistic but a series split against the Giants is all that should be looked for before St. Louis. This stretch has been beyond brutal and may get worse before it gets better.

I'm hoping Cedeno takes advantage of his opportunity

Plus, it really comes down to pitching, anyway. If the starters get back on track, even the less desirable lineup that we’re going to see could be ok.

by Shanghai Badger on Jun 30, 2008 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Boy Oh Boy...

...that really, really hurts. I bet Lou’s head is swimming with this lineup juggling as of late. What do you do now?

EPat/Murton in left? I’d rather have DeRo at 3rd, than Ronny. Ronny/Hamster at 2nd. Either way, this hurts the middle of the lineup. Gotta think Geo bats cleanup now.

Hope everything works out for Rami and his family.

by carmen_fanzone on Jun 30, 2008 8:20 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe Murton tonight..

With the lefty Zito throwing. Ronny is probably our best 3rd baseman, so I like him there and DeRo at 2nd. Don’t think we’ll see EPat in left again, but you never know.

Time for some of the subs to step up

Not sure why they don’t let him have Thursday as well. They are facing Lincecum (SP) and those seem to be the weakiest odds of us winning with or without Rami in the lineup.

Yeah, but if you remember

or read the box score you posted, he completely shut the Cubs down for 8 innings, and he’s only getting better. I think we really need those first three games, because Lincecum is tough.

by sackings108 on Jun 30, 2008 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

True.

However, that does show that Lincecum is beatable, even when he throws well. You did note who the Cubs’ pitcher was that night, didn’t you?

by Al Yellon on Jun 30, 2008 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Didn't.

Guess that was one of those good starts he had last year, which seemed few and far between after the first month. I’ll tell you what though Al, I really hope the Cubs give Marshall another start after the way he pitched last night, because I think he’s a much better pitcher than Marquis, salary be damned.

by sackings108 on Jun 30, 2008 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Marshall threw really well last night, I agree.

Two bad pitches, otherwise I thought he matched Buehrle quite well.

I definitely remember that game...

...partly because of the amazing finish and partly because it was the first time I’d ever really taken note of Lincecum. He may be my favorite non-Cub pitcher in the NL – not that I’ll be rooting for him in the upcoming game, of course.

My point more was that

We are going to fly him all the way across the US for one game. I don’t know if get his own private charter…I don’t know how these things work but it seems pretty crazy for him to lose three hours and fly 8 plus hours for one game.

Rammy just went 0-13 in this last series, so hopefully he can work out his family issues and get back on track. But more importantly, we all hope everything will be alright

I attended 2 of the 3 games last year in SF

Including the one where Lincecum threw 8 innings of impressive baseball and got batted around in the 9th where the Cubs game through with clutch hits. (Wasn’t able to make it to the day game which the Cubs ended up losing). Just a note on that gear last year, Marquis was throwing a ton more pitches than Lincecum. It seemed for the first 5 or 6 innings, Lincecum would only throw 10 or so pitches.

Going to the Wed and Thursday games this week in SF; had this series marked on the calendar since the season schedule came out.

Go Cubs!

Your link is broken.

Here’s the correct one.

Reason confirmed:

An injury-depleted Cubs roster takes another hit this week when cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez takes the next three games off to tend to the birth of a son back home in the Dominican Republic.

I find it hard to believe that Ramírez's wife...

is giving birth in the Dominican Republic and not in Chicago, where the kid could be born both a Dominican and a US citizen. I assume she is in no condition to travel.

Funny thing is

That Aramis apparently asked for four days off and the Cubs only gave him three.
