Fukudome Close To Losing All-Star Spot

According to an article posted by MLB.com today, Fukudome is holding his spot with a lead of only 33,000 votes.  So anyone who hasn't voted to your max number yet, you have two days to help Fukudome hold the lead!

Braun crept to within 33,000 votes of Fukudome for the third and final automatic National League All-Star Game outfield berth in the fan voting update released Monday, two days before the polls close

I agree, sure, but this is so stupid, the whole all-star game, how we vote, how we can "cheat", that it matters, but silly fans determine the starters...ugh

Darn

I was voting for Fukudome, but I was also voting for Braun because I really didn’t want to see Junior in yet another all-star game. Turns out I wasn’t helping things.

Hey

the point was to nail Griffey, not help Braun. :-)

Also, maybe to get us home field advantage in the WS maybe.

lol, this is totally what I started doing after my first 5 ballots

It all the sudden hit me, I was like, why would I want to see their good players out there?! I bet those bostonians are the reason Dome is slipping. I plan on voting 25 times or so a day now. :P It’s the Chicago way.

This is why All Star voting is stupid

There is absolutely no reason that Fukudome deserves to be starting, let alone attend the all star game. Don’t get me wrong, he’s been good, just not good enough to make the team.

The shame is that 2 Brewer outfielders should both be ahead Soriano and Fukudome. However, I don’t think Hart has had a good enough year to go and didn’t get an All Star vote from me.

by brewfan2 on Jun 30, 2008 1:22 PM CDT   0 recs

Maybe if you just go by offensive numbers

Fukudome’s been excellent defensively.

I’m not saying he’s the most deserving outfielder, but you have to take that into account. Otherwise you’ll end up voting 3 left fielders into your starting lineup.

And if you are just going to go by offensive numbers, the real tragedy is that Pat Burrell isn’t getting voted onto the team – not Corey Hart, whose dark sunglasses apparently make it hard for him to take a walk.

by Wreckard on Jun 30, 2008 1:35 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Corey Hart

I said in my first post that I don’t think Hart deserves to go. I just think he deserves it more than Fukudome. As for defense, Hart isn’t that far behind Fukudome.

by brewfan2 on Jun 30, 2008 1:40 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And none of them

...not Braun, Fukudome, or Hart – deserve to go as much as Burrell. He’s had a monster year and it’s a crime that he isn’t in the running.

Hands down the best OF in the NL for the first half this year.

by Wreckard on Jun 30, 2008 1:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

As for offense, Fukudome isn't that far behind

Oh wait, he’s ahead of Fukudome at all!

Fukudome is 6th in the NL in OBP and tied for 10th in Rs despite batting 5th in the lineup. I guess the runs could be a testament more so to ROY and All-Star catcher Geovany Soto’s ability to drive Fukudome but I don’t see Hart giving an ‘elite’ ‘All-Star talents’ to the game. Add in Fukudome’s arm and range on defense and it’s really a no-brainer unless you have been drinking too much Crew Brew.

As for Braun, I’m much more willing to concede that he could be more worthy of an All-Star spot than Fukudome but really, all Braun offers is power. There are times and places where I would take power, but his 16:68 BB:K ratio is Double-A level and as already mentioned here, his defense is average at best. If we want to bring guys just because of power, let’s at least add Pat Burrell. At least his OBP is over .400.

Can you imagine that starting outfield?

Griffey / Soriano / Braun?

That would have to be the worst defensive outfield in ever put on a major league field. Where do you even put everyone?

by Wreckard on Jun 30, 2008 1:30 PM CDT   0 recs

Braun

0 errors, 6 assists

He’s not as bad in the outfield as you may think.

As for the starting outfield, it isn’t that complicated. Braun in left, Griffey in center, Fukudome in right. Soriano is on the shelf and even if he is able to come back, he probably won’t be playing too long in an exhibition game.

by brewfan2 on Jun 30, 2008 1:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

And an RF9 of 1.8

That’s Carlos Lee territory there.

And yeah, if you are starting an outfield other than the one I put in my post it isn’t that complicated.

If you do you start an entire outfield of butchers.

by Wreckard on Jun 30, 2008 1:56 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'd love to see Braun's RZR

But I can’t find it. RF9 is the best I can do unfortunately.

by Wreckard on Jun 30, 2008 1:59 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

RF9 doesn't tell the entire story

When you have 4 starting RHP’s and 1 LHP it can affect the numbers. Also, it doesn’t take into account outfield shifts.

By no means am I suggesting that Braun is great in the outfield. I’m only saying that he’s much much better in the outfield than third base. Unfortunately, people only remember that aspect of his defense.

by brewfan2 on Jun 30, 2008 2:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

true

he is better in LF than he was at 3B, but there is a reason why they moved him.

since when...

do guys get to be in the all-star game based on how much they deserve it?

when fan voting started for good.

by bluekoolaide on Jun 30, 2008 2:21 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

its true that many a player has made the all star game when they dont deserve it.

I just figure since the stupid game actually means something, instead of voting for OUR guys at all positions, maybe we should vote for the guys that truly deserve it. That way the NL can win and then IF the Cubs are playing baseball at the end of October they have home field advantage.

With Dome not used to a 162-game season (plus multiple playoff series!), I’d rather he spent the off days resting.

I haven't (and won't) vote for Fukudome

As big as a Cubs fan as I am, I can never justify voting someone into the all-star game that doesn’t deserve it. Although I do enjoy Fukudome a whole bunch, and am very pleased the Cubs have him, he does not deserve to be in the all-star game.

I agree with a few comments above

It’d be cool if he was on the AS team, but he doesn’t deserve it.

Who really cares about All Star berths !!

The objective is to make the playoffs and win a World Series. I voted for Kosuke for the All Star game. But if he doesn’t make it then he doesn’t make it and no great shakes. Life moves on. Hard to argue with Ryan Braun given his burgeoning superstar status in this league.

GET Rich Harden !!! 11 starts, 5-0, 57 IP, 83 Ks, 2.15 ERA !!!

All-Star Stuff Overblown

Okay, home field advantage for the World Series is determined by who wins the game. That’s a moot point, if your team doesn’t get to the World Series. It’s still an exhibition game. Home field advantage doesn’t matter as much in baseball as it does in other sports. I care a lot more about what happens in the regular season and postseason.

My ballot

First Base: Lee, D., CHC
Second Base: DeRosa, M., CHC
Third Base: Ramirez, A., CHC
Shortstop: Theriot, R., CHC
Catcher: Soto, G., CHC
Outfielder: Edmonds, J., SD
Outfielder: Fukudome, K., CHC
Outfielder: Soriano, A., CHC

x25, maybe i will hit it with a few more addresses in the next couple days when i want to procrastinate work

Before Edmonds: 24-16, (.600); With Edmonds: 25-17 (.595)
Edmonds with Cubs: .302 / .382 / .604

Exhibit A for what is horribly wrong with the All Star selection process

Pitching is KING. We don't add a frontline starting pitcher and a quality bullpen arm then this season will have yet another sad conclusion.

Likely true

And Braun deserves to be there. The whole setup is a joke, though. Fans of NL contenders should vote for AL scrubs and vice-versa. That’d put a stop to this nonsense.

Maxed out

by sdurst on Jul 1, 2008 8:27 AM CDT   0 recs

FYI, I received this offer from a couple of posters at Lone Star Ball (Rangers SBN blog):
We at LoneStarBall were hoping to make a deal with Cubs fans. We are going to get in tonight and make as many emails as we can and vote our guys in. What we would like to know is whether Cubs fans would help us in voting in Ian Kinsler and Milton Bradley. Quite frankly, Dustin Pedroia over Kinsler is a joke, and we would love nothing more than to take down the NY-Boston voting empire. In return, we would gladly vote Fukudome, and any other guys you guys may have close to being in.

Well, I think those guys are pretty deserving. If you all want to help them out, they’ll help us out. Can’t hurt.
