What's your favorite Cubs uni?
Well, I'm home alone and unfortunately sick with the flu (since Saturday!), so I'm killing time one of the best ways I know; surfing eBay! I was searching for Cubs jerseys since my Greg Maddux home from 2004 is getting kind of small on me, and I was thinking about which Cubs jersey best suits me. So I'd like to get all of your opinions! (these opinions won't help me decide what jersey to get, I'm simply curious.)
Personally, I used to be a fan of the 1970s pajama tops since I'm in love with just about every powder blue jersey I see, but recently my tastes have gone towards the 1984 road...
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I really liked the vintage jerseys they wore a couple weeks ago
I hate the pinstripes and wish they would do away with them.

+1 on the non-pinstripes from the vintage game...
....and honestly, I think that 1909 jersey that says “Chicago” in vertical letters down the middle is very hip.

My Favorite
I always liked the style of uniform Grace is wearing in that pic, plus the basic home pinstripes. I’ve always been fond of these because they were what the Cubs wore when I first became a Cub fan. So in a sense, there my childhood uniforms…. I would love to see the Cubs have a turn back the clock style day where they were these again. Yahoooooo!!!!

Sorry...
... both of the ones you like are awful. The ‘70s road blues look like pajamas, and the ‘84 tops are softball jerseys.
The current uniforms are classy and timeless. That’s the one I like.

Softball jerseys?

That’s what I think about when I think about major league softball unis.
I also like the road unis the Cubs used in the mid-90s, with the cursive “Cubs” on the chest that’s similar to what the Iowa Cubs use as their home jersey.

When I see those Cubs uniforms...
... I always wonder if somebody let one. Because these stink back…. I began to wonder if there was a Cubs/Cuba thing going on. Wasn’t Larry Himes the GM back then? There had to be a connection between him and Castro… I can’t prove it yet, but someday, I will.

I am not a fan of the blue alternates, if only because it’s a different color blue than their caps…which for some reason irritates me to no end. I mean they are a professional ball team you think that they could match the colors. I’d like to see a uni with the newer bear face that I believe Nike has been using on merch. for the past couple years.

I think the lettering would be the same as the current greys…but no numbers on the front because it might look oddly-balanced if that makes sense..it wouldn’t replace the other greys..just as an alternate. possibly a pinstripe one as well…could be like a sunday jersey

My vote
I love the piping and the contrasting colors on the lettering. In addition, this happens to be Fergie Jenkins favorite road unfiorm too. (I know because he told me, and mentioned he was quite dissapointed when they switched to the 1969 models minus the piping and the outline on the letters/numbers. I think its timeless, and looked particularly nice with the strirrups.
by StevenABQ on Jun 30, 2008 2:33 PM CDT 0 recs
The late thirties were the best
I really like the striped socks and undershirts. The shade of blue they wore then was also a lot “bluer” not quite as royal as the blue they wear now.
That said, I love the current ones, but I think they could do more with the road jerseys. Like maybe adding a red underline to Chicago like they had back then.

Pure class
Jersey selection guidelines:
1. The 1909 jersey is pure class; class of 09’. I also like the 1907 World Series jersey.
2. Buy it on sale.
3. Cubbie blue is an ok color, but not that great to wear IMO. Pick one with little or no Cubbie blue. The last time this team won a WS Cubbie blue wasn’t yet invented.
4. Stay away from the bowling shirt look of the 80’s. .

I like those too
from a historical perspective they are pretty cool, but I have a hard time putting a jersey without some element of “blue” in my favorites list. I always thought that the Unis from the Late 40’s through the early 70’s (Home) were perfect, they were designed by Otis Shepard who did all the artwork on the Wrigley Field programs and advertisements for Wrigley gum. To me they are timeless, and the basis for our current Home unis.

Like for a throwback game
Or as a straight up replacement for road unis? I think the trouble would be that somehow you have to incorporate the number on the front of the jersey. I think out of all of the other teams us and the Dodgers have the best looking Road unis, and alot of it is because, as you mentioned the contrasting number color, and I also think because the number appears on the front. What do you think Al, what could they do to the 1909 design to make it work?

Though certainly not the best, I've always had a soft spot for the 1972 roadies...
...because I’m pretty sure that’s when I first started watching the Cubs.Although the numbers in the center instead of left hand side makes it look really strange, I have always liked that Cub patch over any other. I think they only used them for that season, but I could be wrong.
