The Flags of Wrigley Field
On Paul Lukas' Uni-Watch Blog he added this little item to his "ticker" section today. I didn't see it mentioned here anywhere. So I figured you guys would like to check it out.
Otis Shepard, the art director that did all that great stuff from the middle of the last century for the Wrigley company, painted up a little guide to the flags you could see around Wrigley.
The teams have changed, sure, but doesn't something else seem a little off?

The W flag
the colors are now reversed – blue W with a white background
The obvious would be..
reversal of the L and W flags’ colors.

Yep.
That’s what I caught.
What I don’t get is why Brooklyn’s flag is orange.
It is interesting to note that the Philly flag is powder blue. That’s probably because it was made during the Phils’ “Blue Jay” period.
"Whoever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?" - Frank Chance
I like how the Celtics used to be an NL baseball team
Red Aurbach must’ve noticed that his outfielders were seven feet tall and decided to start a BBall team.
I guess that worked out okay.
Green Hulk Fists
Never seen the Chicago Cubs Flag before
at least not that I remember.
It looks kind of cool.

That flag...
... used to fly on the RF foul pole every day before they had the retired number flags up there. We need to have a couple of stars added after this year!

something like this
im not SWL so this isn’t perfect. with an odd number of red stars I could figure out what to do without doing a complete overhaul, but the 3rd blue star seemed natural in the middle

I would SO love to own one of those flags.
These are the saddest of possible words: "Tinker to Evers to Chance"
I'm surprised they don't sell them.
But then, they haven’t flown this flag at Wrigley since the late 1970’s. The current administration may not even know it exists.

I hope they find out. I'd pay for it.
That flag is awesome.

Interesting Post
Does anyone know when they switched the colors of W and L flags and why?
"I'm petrified of nipple chafing. Once it starts, it's a vicious circle." Andy Bernard
I don't know when...
the colors were switched, but I do know that the reason for the switch was that the white L flag looked exactly like the white “surrender” flag. The team didn’t want to put out the message that they were surrendering after a loss
I don't recall the W flag being blue in my lifetime as a Cubs fan...
... so it had to be before 1963.

That's not all...
There are also only 48 stars on Old Glory.
I'll tell you exactly when & where it's from.
Or, pretty close.
That exact drawing appeared in the 1946 and 1947 Wrigley Field scorecard (which was a small magazine stapled around a scorecard, similar to today’s though smaller in size). It did NOT appear in the 1943 scorecard—I have all of those in my collection.
In 1948 the Cubs went to the current scorecard format, just a card with no magazine. My guess is that it began in 1946.

What are the flags flown from the grandstand rooftops?
I went to Cubs.com over the weekend and I bid on the PKW (Philip Knight Wrigley) flag and won. It was flown during the entire 1996 season and 90% of my bid went to Cubs Care. I’ve seen the flags but I couldn’t find any info on what’s there.
Thanks!
Too many to list ....
There’s one for Kerry Wood’s 20 K game, there’s one that says 1998 on it, probably ‘84, ‘89, all that. I think there’s a GRACIE but I’m not sure. SAMMY/66. Quite a few.

There's a MADDUX one, added when he hit either 300 W or 3000 K

There's also a POW MIA flag which is the very last flag that flies over the grandstand in left I believe

Cubs.com
This website has become unbearably garish. It was never elegant, but the latest “upgrade” has gone too far—I now avoid the site at all costs, and try to get the info I need from some other source.
Oh for the days when Otis Shephard created all the Cubs’ graphics and artwork.

All the MLB websites got this so-called "upgrade".
You’re right. It’s horrible.

Remember when...
The Cubs website looked like this?

Vaguely yes
it wasn’t great then either, but it was way more readable.

Change the link...
to the previous game when the Cubs beat the Cards 7-3. I quit using the Cubs.com page when I couldnt link to the then free online broadcast.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand. - Homer J Simpson
May 10, 2000 (it's 8 years old, so I'm going to be a little liberal on the blockquotes...)
When 19-year-old Carlos Zambrano toes the pitching rubber with his imposing frame – all 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds of him – West Tenn pitching coach Alan Dunn says what he likes most about him is his “demeanor.”“He’s absolutely fearless up there,” Dunn says of his Venezuelan sensation, currently 2-1 with a microscopic 1.38 ERA through six starts. “He honestly believes that he should get every single batter out. Carlos comes right after the hitters, and shows a maturity beyond his years when he’s on the mound.”
“God has blessed me with confidence,” he says. There’s nothing fancy about his thought process out there, either, according to the teenage righthander. “When I’m on the mound, I’m thinking, ‘Throw strikes.’ Simple as that.”
While he acknowledges that fellow Venezuelans Omar Vizquel and Andres Galarraga have aided his interest in playing professionally, Zambrano is quick to cite his most prominent baseball influences: “My brothers. They didn’t play pro ball, but they played all the time at home. They’re the ones who really helped me get where I am now.”
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
That's great
I suppose it’s some kind of a coming of age for the world wide web when we can look back at ‘retro’ webpages with nostalgia. Not just for the content, but for the familiar yet dated design. And I agree about how overcrowded and garish the new cubs.com looks, too. Far too much going on there.
Interesting to see some of those prospects listed. That Zambrano kid at West Tenn looks useful. Wonder what ever happened to him?
Order of the Flags
Since this was WAY before divisional play, how did the team flags display the order of the standings?
Was it top left, top right, 2nd left, 2nd right, etc?
Or was it left, top to bottom, then right, top to bottom?
"That’s what I love about my skip, man. He’ll tell you that you suck...I know I suck. We know we suck...Yeah, we suck. But we’ll see who sucks at the end."
- Gary Sheffield
It says so on the image...
... but it’s 1st through 4th on the left, then 5th through 8th on the right, top to bottom on each side.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Thanks, Al
it only says that the top left is first, and the bottom right is 8th….
"That’s what I love about my skip, man. He’ll tell you that you suck...I know I suck. We know we suck...Yeah, we suck. But we’ll see who sucks at the end."

True.
When I was a kid there was only one league, no divisions, and so I learned early the order of the flags was what I said it was… thought it was obvious, but I can see why, if you are used to the current divisional order, you might think otherwise.
