Early Morning Thread 6/4 -- Post Win (9 in a row!)

Good Morning Early Risers!!  Well it looks like our rockin' Cubs have secured a road series win!

Marquis didn't have much but enough to get the win.  You gotta love a team that picks up a struggling pitcher.

I mentioned it in last night's thread but why would San Diego build a beautiful  brand new stadium and  make it  so cavernous?  Folks in San Diego  tired of watching  home runs?  Anyway, that's their problem.

Can I get some love for a SWEEP tonight??!!

The cavernous dimensions of Petco Park

did not seem to deter Geovany Soto, Alfonso Soriano or Mark DeRosa last night.

I have not watched the game yet, but I was almost giggly when I woke up, reached for my phone, and checked the box score before I got out of bed this morning.

Agreed on our HR's last night

My point was more about actually building a new ballpark and designing it that way. Unlike say, Great American in Cincy or whatever the Philly field is called.

Don’t get me wrong I’m geeked about how the Cubs are playing.

by AlabamaCubFan on Jun 4, 2008 6:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I know

And I was only getting gi**ly with Cub Power overcoming the challenge of the Padres’ new cavern.

As for the park design, didn’t they build it to suit their particular team/pitching staff at the time?

I'm sure

But they didn’t honestly believe Tony Gwynn was going to be there forever did they?

Maybe they were just prescient about the steroids era coming to an end. ;)

by AlabamaCubFan on Jun 4, 2008 7:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Honestly, I'd rather see more parks like Petco...

It should be hard to hit a HR… unlike Minute Maid, Citizens Bank, Great American, etc. where pop-ups fly over the fence on a regular basis.

I think I read/heard somewhere that the cool ocean breeze has something to do with the ball not carrying well in SD.

My husband's boss ...

Worked as the “official” photographer at Petco and he was told the ballpark was “Bonds-proof.” Like your concerns with Gwynn, did the Padres really think Bonds would never fade away? So, no Barry, but heck, they’ve got a helluva canyon!

I also seem to recall when Petco opened the Fathers suffered from a lack of home-field advantage as its design seemed to go against the ballclub’s make-up at the time.

Also

I got a picture here from when I was a kid in summer camp and there’s another kid wearing a t-shirt with that Cub Power logo on it. Yes, I am that vintage and retro.

Did the exact same thing JohnM....

.....reached for phone, saw “Cubs Won” and smiled. I turned out the lights once the Cubs tied it at 3.

10….what a nice ring that number has….

Slightly OT: AlabamaCubFan - are belated birthday greetings in order?

Not gonna mention the number (henryrodriguez) but were you supposed to be at Wrigley last week against the Dodgers on 5/27 but had to cancel trip?

If so, send me an e-mail with your snail mail particulars – I’ve got a scorecard (filled out) and bleacher ticket stub to send your way. Unfortunately, my camera was awol, so I don’t have pictures – my bad. And no baseball either as the winds were blowing in at about a 25 mph clip – Mother Nature’s bad.

Hawk

You rock!

my email is tc_73072(at) yahoo (dot) com.

Shoot me an email and I’ll send you the particulars.

Quick question for you. Were you profiled in Gene Wojciechowski’s book?

by AlabamaCubFan on Jun 4, 2008 7:26 AM CDT up reply actions

e-mail sent.

and yes, I was in Wojo’s book. I’m the ballhawk that associated his age with jersey numbers from the Cleveland Browns.

He did a chapter for each game of the season, but instead of focusing solely on the game, he’d take a tangent and write about something related to the Cubs, Wrigley Field, or the neighborhood. Usually there was a connection to that day’s game, but not always. Ushers, parking lot attendant, ballhawks, Scott McClain’s long long trip back to the Bigs, you get the idea. It’s a pretty good read, even without the ballhawk stuff. ;-)

You shortchange yourself sir

It’s one of my favorite sections. IMO it best showed the passion of true Cubs fans.

Dude, you wait outside the Field HOPING for a HR. You are the ultimate optimist. I love it.

dude .. you are amazing .. what a generous fella!

if you were profiled in Woj’s book, I am sure I recognize you from your hirsute visage.

I thought I recognized you beneath the stands as the Cubs filed out to their wheels when I was last in Wrigley during the first Met loss last August .. should have shook your hand then.

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

hirsute visage

Ballhawk has a hairy face? Didn’t look like it on TV the other day…..hmmm.

In fact if I'm not mistaken

there’s not a lot of hirsute-osity going on above the face, either…. :-)

Guilty as charged

I definitely have an aerodynamic hairline hidden under that cap. Too bad I have a lot of un-aerodynamic stuff hidden under my shirt though – well, maybe it’s not so hidden. Oh well…

Once again ESPN ignored the Cubs

But we all needed to know how Joblow did in NY. What a dang joke ..

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Apparantly the Celtics and Lakers are playing some sort of series as well

Dunks galore! No defense! More commercial breaks than should be allowed by law!

The NBA…..it’s FAN-tastic!

by AlabamaCubFan on Jun 4, 2008 7:37 AM CDT up reply actions

That's because

the Finals are on ABC, and ESPN is required by law to mention the occasion every nine seconds.

I want to let this bug me, because let's be honest...

What exactly do we have to do to get some coverage here?! Best record in baseball? check. Longest win streak. check. Many comeback dramatic wins? check. Come ON!

Then I remember these Cubbies are kicking a$$ and taking names, and I think, who cares about ESPN? We’ll just keep having fun and winning games, and hopefully they’ll catch up when they realize the fun they’ve been missing. ;)

by slcathena on Jun 4, 2008 8:11 AM CDT up reply actions

I knew it

I watched last night until we tied the game, almost 11:00 CST. I went to bed knowing that we would probably score a 3-4 times and we win again. Of course, it happens again. The Comeback Cubs do it again. I think many of us are looking for 100 wins out of this team, it’s more likely every day.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

by mrcubsfan on Jun 4, 2008 8:19 AM CDT reply actions

i too watched til the end of 5th

all night long cub hitters were getting themselves to hitters count and getting the pitch they wanted and just flat out missing it one way or another. it was bound to happen and it did as soon as I quit watching. great game minus our double A starter we started last night. oh boy did lou light his ass up on the mound. I love itttt. on to double digits please. lets beat our future marquis replacement tonight and lower his trade value a bit.

It might beeeeee!! It could beeeeeee!! It issssss!! Homerun!! Holyyyyyyy Cow!!!

by cubsluver22 on Jun 4, 2008 8:24 AM CDT up reply actions

ESPN - They will never cover the Cubs over the Yanks, BoSox and Mets

If you recall, they shortchanged that great 05 ChiSox team as well. Everybody needs to just tune out of that network and watch Sportsnite. I am so sick of watching Baseball tonight and all you get is a one minute highlight of the best team in baseball. Lets boycott!!

by PieFan08 on Jun 4, 2008 8:25 AM CDT reply actions

Also

if you don’t watch Baseball Tonight you don’t have to listen to Steve Phillips pontificate every night. I dislike that guy, alot.

They kept scoring

because you kept asking for another run. You do know that has to be repeated tonight don’t you? ;-)
