ESPN Ignores The Cubs

As most of you know, I work on early morning news at ABC-7 in Chicago. Every morning, the ABC network overnight news show that precedes our show runs a short two-minute sports update from ESPN. This morning they did the following stories:

Story #1: Joba getting blown out
Story #2: Pedro's return
Story #3: Randy Johnson passes Clemens on strikeout list
Story #4: Braves come back to beat Marlins

Not a word about the hottest team in baseball, the Cubs. ESPN disgusts me.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

#1-#3 to be fair

I think #1-3 are bigger stories than Cubs. I mean if we were to get 10 in a row I would agree with you. Perhaps #4 was done only because Braves/Marlins ended way before Cubs. ESPN is in CT and whoever sends Chicago their top stories probably left work at 1AM before the Cubs game was over.

I know people who work there and that’s my hunch. If we were home or playing on East Coast we’d be up on top 4.

by ak123 on Jun 4, 2008 9:34 AM CDT reply actions

#1 is not

He’s a promising young pitcher that has been blown out of proportion. Do you really think that if the Cubs decided to start Marmol that ESPN would cover it like the idiotic Joba watch. I watched SportsCenter while exercising this morning, they actually reported how many balls were hard off him.

I can actually see

some reason for having Pedro high in the show. He is future HOF’er.

The funny thing though was that there was a matchup between the top 2 teams in the AL East. It was fairly far down on the Spots Center list. If it was Yankees/Red Sox it would have been number 1 but even the Red Sox take a back seat to Joba.

If Greg Maddux missed some time

do you think his first start back would get this kind of ESPN coverage? Not me.

I think the Yankee coverage is much worse than the Red Sox

At least the Red Sox have been winning championships and deserve coverage. The Yankees have won in quite a while but still get prime coverage.

David Ortiz – surprised they didn’t have a live reporter outside his home

SportsCenter wasn't any better

I think that might have been the order there but I think they were rerunning an earlier version so the Cubs game was not final. All I wanted were Cubs highlights but instead I learn that Marco Scutaro had the only really hard hit ball off Joba. It was a warning track flyball. Wow.

I just wish there was some other way to get baseball highlights at 6:30 in the morning.

by timlacy on Jun 4, 2008 9:54 AM CDT reply actions

Yes.

Who cares what the network thinks? To be honest, I have to think ‘not enough Cubs attention’ is sort of funny - you really have to be away from Chicago to realize it - the Cubs get an inordinate amount of attention for a team that—well, hasn’t won since Teddy Roosevelt was in the White House.

The ‘attention’ on the Cubs always confounds other fans, even in the losing years.

Not being the lead on ESPN is of little consequence. When the Padres were winning, and getting exactly NO coverage the fans would complain, and I’d understand. In this corner of the country, in the shadow of L-A—being ignored, or being considered a suburb of L-A is a sore point. (I once read an article in which La Jolla was described as a suburb of L-A. Well, if you like a 120-mile commute, OK.)

But the Cubs are never ignored. The damn goat, Bartman, yadda, yadda—always comes up. Just as the 1984 Cubs were the lead in this morning’s game story in the SD Union-Trib.

I’d LOVE for THAT to be ignored.

What's Lost

I think what’s lost in all of this Eastern Seaboard Programming Network anger is the fact Chicago isn’t the biggest sports market out there… I think we’re 3rd to New York and LA… and although we PROBABLY have a larger fan base than either market (even though we share teams as well) the viewership in those areas is far greater than what we get here in Chicago. PLUS everyone has seen the Cubs crumble before, so maybe they’re just not ready to invest yet? I don’t know about you guys, but when they were down 9-1 and came back, well let’s just say I pulled the jersey’s out of the closet and put the Cubs flag back up at my house…

Small Market Chicago?

Chicago is a bigger market than Boston. Yet, the Red Sox get more coverage on ESPN than the Cubs. BTW, I’ve always thought of Chicago as a really big city. #3 in market size should qualify for big market status. Being based in Bristol, CT, is no excuse for over covering the Yankees and Red Sox. I can see why the Memphis Grizzlies, being a bad NBA team in a Lilliputian market, get very little coverage. The Cubs, being a good team in a big market, should get more coverage.

Oh come on, guys. The spurned lover act does no one any favors.

Numbers 1, 2, and 3 are all bigger stories than the Cubs beating the worst team in the NL.

What’s not to love about the Joba story? It reeks of Steinbrenner hubris, which is something baseball fans universally love to roll their eyes about.

4 is debatable, but it was a dramatic comeback, involving one of this season’s most exciting players, between division rivals. I think a case can be made for it.

ESPN has given the Cubs a fair bit of coverage and lavished the team with praise most of the season. I’m not going to come out and say there’s no east coast bias there, because I do think there tends to be, but I don’t think that this is necessarily evidence of that and it certainly isn’t worthy of hyperbolic “disgust.”

Joba getting so much coverage on ESPN is pretty disgusting. Volquez, Kershaw, and Gallagher are also young pitchers who combined this season haven’t got the coverage that Joba has in the past 2 weeks.

I don’t like it when people act like the Cubs are the only team shunned, because there are really 27 teams that are ignored, but the emphasis on 3 teams are certainly worthy of disgust.

by ecbc on Jun 4, 2008 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Are you honestly putting Gallagher on the same level of Volquez and Kershaw?

Kershaw got a ton of hype when he made his first start. Volquez has been amazing and should probably have more coverage. Gallagher really isn’t on either of their levels though and I can’t honestly say I think he deserves to be major news on ESPN.

Anyway what’s great about the Joba thing isn’t that he’s a phenomenal young pitcher – he is – it’s that Steinbrenner Jr is potentially hurting his development by publicly forcing him into the rotation against the better judgment of the GM.

People eat that stuff up. The whole “will he or won’t he” public back and forth with Hank Steinbrenner et al, following by him ending up in the rotation after all, and then ending up with a disastrous first start – there’s some fantastic schadenfreude to be found in that story.

I just don’t care how they ignore what really is sports news – especially when it involves the best team in baseball, which is a team they historically spurned like a pile of manure smeared into their L.L. Bean loafers.

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

2 and 3 are totally legit

You are talking about significant things about two future Hall of Fame players , this beats
the Cubs winning streak in the first 3rd of the season. One is a total Yankee centric
joke and 4 is just out of place. I can’t watch TV now but even if the Cubs win tonight
I have to believe the top baseball story of the day will be Smoltz being out for the season
( side note one less reason for Maddux to consider going back to the Braves though
I seriously doubt he will go ANYWHERE).

Also per other posters I am more than content with the lack of attention though
sports fans in general should question ESPN’s priorities

Unless the Cubs

are on ESPN AND there is NO other source for the game, ESPN never pollutes my screen. I have, for years, thought them to be egomaniacal (to put that term in the perspective of a “news” outlet) in their approach to sports in general and especially to baseball. Their broadcasters do NO research about the teams playing, they do not call the game being played, just use the game as an excuse to have another edition of Baseball Tonight, which means RedYankMets tonight. Their biased reporting reminds me of the CNN anchors literally crying WHILE DOING THE ELECTION news in 2000 when Gore didn’t win. Just a thoroughly disgusting network.

ESPN

As a former Chicagoan now stuck in the Northeast and longtime Cubs fan, I have an alternate explanation for ESPN vis a vis the Cubs. ESPN knows there are a lot of hungry Cubs fans out there, but they want to suck them into watching as many of their interminable commercials as possible before showing any Cubs highlights or stories, if any.

by sweetswinger on Jun 4, 2008 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Really?

But then they lose all the people in the Northeast after the first 5 minutes. It doesnt make sense. IIRC, there are more people with more tvs to watch in New York then there are in Chicago

ESPN

ESPN exists to dump commercials on the 18-34 demographic. Wait ‘til NFL training camps start. ESPN’s entire baseball coverage, let along its coverage of the Cubs, will drop significantly.

Understandable in part.

Considering how many people live in the East Coast I can understand the Yankees and the Mets getting top billing last night. It was the beginning of the experiment with Chamberlain (BTW, it exploded in the Yankees’ faces again last night; moving Chamberlain to the starting rotation left the Yankees exposed in the latter innings all week,) The other top game had the return of a HOF’er: Pedro Martínez.

I also understand Randy Johnson getting top billing, because he passed Clemens in K’s, a landmark.

However, the Cubs should have been at least the #4 baseball story: the hottest team around. They weren’t mentioned because they were playing a dead team and the media expect them to sweep the Padres. But it should have been mentioned ahead of the Marlins game, at least.

What we are known for

The Cubs winning is not news to ESPN. ESPN likes it when the Cubs lose, so they can talk about curses, jinxes, black cats, Ron Santo, etc. Winning throws them off.

It's not ESPN

from here on out it should be referred to as ESPNY (Eastern Sports Programming of New York)

"This is why Major League Baseball does not need instant replay, because then every single play will then be reviewed." -- Joe Morgan, 5/18/08, referring to an umpire ruling a Carlos Delgado homerun foul when replays showed it hit the foul pole.

ESPNYB

Eastern Sports Programming of New York and Boston

Don’t leave them out. The programming is almost as annoying as the fans.

Honestly.....

Who needs ESPN, when you have BCB?! More informative Cub coverage here than anywhere else….

That's funny because on the radio

they get a lot of coverage. ESPN 1000 carries the national shows, Mike & Mike (5-9) & Tirico & Van Pelt (12-2) Chicago time and both of these shows has a lot of Cubs coverage. And I’m not talking about the ‘every 20 minutes SportsCentre’.

ESPN ignores the cubs?

Really? Are you serious?

Have you noticed who is getting all of the Nationally televised games recently? Once you figure that out, then check the schedule to see who’s playing Sunday Night Baseball this week.

I lived in New England

Maine and New Hampshire for 11 years, ( Last year lived there in 1994) This all prior to the Red Sox winning there two World Seires in 04 and last year. The time I lived there you would see maybe 25 percent of the people be interested in the Red Sox, ball cap here and there, maybe a bumper sticker on a truck, some people would talk about the Red Sox on a day to day basis and that would be to cruicify Bill Buckner ( herard about Calvin Scharldi Red Sox fans). My point is there was no Red Sox Nation as they claim, ONLY when they won the World Series they now claim to have the Nation. I go to Maine and New Hampshire every year to see inlaws and sister in laws etc.. It is beyond belief the NEW Red Sox fans, they have come out of the wood works to NOW become fans, it is shamefull and acctually funny. They couldn’t name a 2 players on there 1986 team or to be more accurate, they couldn’t name 3 players from there 2003 team. It is embarrassing talking to these people, no knowledge of there team, no history.
My point is the CUBS have the nation win or lose, we hang with this team no matter the outcome. It is and was Cub Nation before this so called Red Sox Nation.
My take is ESPN has jumped on the bandwagon just like the rest of New England.

Boston's only talked about

because of one reason…...they’re the Yankees biggest rival. It doesn’t matter that they’ve won 2 WS in 4 years. It’s because they are the Yankees biggest rival.
