A Cube in St. Louis

I'm a life-long Cub fan from Southern Illinois. While my love of the Cubs, and my career, has nearly brought me up to Chicago a couple of times. I settled down in St. Louis to be near my family.

Anyway, my fiancee surprised me with a trip to Wrigley a few weekends ago when the D-Backs were in town. While there, we watched the last two games of a sweep that finally made be believe this team is the best team in the NL, and I bought a Fukudome home jersey and a little car "W" flag.

So, last Monday the Cubs beat the Dodgers in Wrigley, and I brought the flag into my office to tack up to the side of my cube to let the ubiquitous Cardinal fans know when the Cards are going to have to win just to keep up. The plan was to of course fly it after every win, and then take it down after they lose.

The thing is, the people around here think it's going to be up all the time, because I've never had to take it down, eight games later.

I'll see if anyone says anything after it's lowered, IF the Cubs ever lose again!

Nice post...

...sounds like you’re new here. When we post fanposts, if it not directly related to the Cubbies, we like to put OT in the title, like this: “OT: A Cube in St. Louis”. It helps direct our procrastination.

Seriously, though, I’m 4 hours straight west of you in Lawrence, Kansas, and my girlfriend just moved to Rolla, MO, bout 90 min from you. Welcome.

Um...

... did you read the post? It WAS Cub-related!!

Just because it referenced “St. Louis” in the title doesn’t mean it wasn’t Cub-related.

Please stop policing the FanPosts. Thanks.

My bad, Jesus Christ

I thought if a post wasn’t about the ACTUAL TEAM it was deemed OT. Wasn’t trying to “police” fanposts; I did introduce myself…

Brilliant.

Another St Louis resident here. I printed a wee little flag in May to “fly” after victories. Unfortunately, almost to the day I printed it the Cubs went on a skid, so I threw the thing away. We’ve done pretty well since (cough, understatement) so I’ve yet to procure another one.

Oh WOW!

I thought I was the only Cub fan on BCB that lived in the St. Louis region. That’s awesome! I love wearing my Cubs hat/gear out in public because I am always getting responses from other people. Most of the Cardinal fans give me dirty looks or walk up to me and say something like “ugh, the Cubs stink!” and walk away laughing. Well, poop on them!

Not long ago, I went over to the Olive Garden in St. Charles, and while there with my wife, an female employee walked up to me, knelt beside me and whispered in my ear. She walked away smiling. Haha… my wife didn’t think it was too funny, but I laughed my head off. All she said was “Just so you know, your not the only Cub fan here in cardinal-ville. Go Cubs!” She came back by later and told my wife all she said, which cooled things over…but still, it was funny! Haha.

GO CUBS! HANG THAT FLAG UP HIGH!!!!!!! YAHOOOOOO!!!!

You must be mistaken...

“Most of the Cardinal fans give me dirty looks or walk up to me and say something like "ugh, the Cubs stink!" and walk away laughing.”

The best fans in baseball would NEVER do anything like that.

Ugh.

I get so much crap it’s ridiculous. You’d think with their championship superiority over us over the years we’d be the angry, bitter ones. But you’d be wrong.

It may be because I live down here...

But the whole “best fans in baseball” thing is pretty well earned. I mean, there are some yokels that wear the “completely useless” and “choke” shirts, and remind you that the Cubs suck every chance they get. But I don’t think they’re the majority.

Some of my best friends, the ones that really, really know baseball are Cardinal fans. I mean, they’re the type of guys that should have their own show or column, because they know the game so well, and while I don’t think that they are the majority either, it does seem like like I know more of that kind of fan than the hateful one.

In ‘97, when I went to the last game Sandberg ever played here at the old Busch, they had a tribute to him before the game, and he got a standing ovation. I’m not sure that a Yankee in Boston, or a Dodger in San Fran, or a Met anywhere would ever get applause like that. And what’s funny, I didn’t even think about how special that was. It was just something I expected.

Ever since the Big Mac years, though, there has been a slight dumbing down of the fan base. They tend to cheer for every routine fly ball like it was hit into the upper deck. And Busch has become more of a place to be seen at on a Friday night than a baseball fans’ haven, but on the whole, I think Cardinal fans tend to live up to that reputation more than they don’t.

Oh, and the next time a Cardinal fan asks you the old, tired “You know what CUBS stands for?” joke, tell them “Chicago Usually Beats St. Louis.”

They really can’t argue with that, head-to-head, the past few years.

I saw

Ozzie’s last game in Wrigley and he got a similar tribue and ovation. And maybe it’s cos I live in the lion’s den here and are thus more subjected to it, but St Louis fans walk around with a sense of entitlement. Though I will argue that there’s a ton of parks, Wrigley included, that people go to because it’s an event, not necessarily a baseball game.

And I love the CUBS anagram. Nicely done.

I'm in St. Louis, too

I wear my Cubs gear all the time here(I’ve been brushed back playing slow pitch cuz of my hat, haha). I have a poster of Wrigley Field prominently displayed in my living room, and the TV is often set on WGN. I have some Cub-fan friends here too, and we all love going to Cards games just to root against them. The fans here are often really polite, but sometimes their just discourteous, and they have too many championship flags for my taste…

GOOOOOOOOOO CUBS!!!

I’m on one of the co-rec leagues in Forest Park, and I’ve seen a guy were a Cubs hat on occasion, but I’ve never said hello.

He said “slow pitch” I figured that’s what he meant. I’ve played in a few, but the only brave soul I’ve seen wear anything Cubs related was in the Forest Park league.

But the leagues play close together sometimes, so maybe you did see me. I only wear my Cubs hat once in a while.

I had no idea this many Cub fans were on BCB and in St Louis. I guess we can’t get much Cubs news down here.

I have an aisle cube

alongside all the VP offices so I’ve been slowly adding Cubs stuff. I have a 12” Cubs logo on my dry erase board, Cubs Win!! (written in Japanese thanks to dragonfantastic), a Cubs calendar, a Cubs mouse pad and Marmol throwing sliders on my PC desktop (thanks SWL). Plus I hang my Cubs hat and/or Jacket at the entrance.

I like your flag idea; would be good here too as Sox fans are the equivalent of Cards fans and there’s plenty of them the last few years. Question; where did you get that foul ball sign from the stadium?

Go ahead, Z me.

I think they still sell them

I got mine about 10 years ago in the store under the right field grandstand at Wrigley.

I got

a little bear I procured from work and stuck a gumball-machine Cubs hat on him (and a small Bears mug in his hand for good measure). Also have various pictures around as well. And, thanks to dragsonfanatic, I got a post-it with “Cubs” in Japanese on top of my monitor.

And I’m wearing my Cubs tie today.

In STL area as well

Central Illinois Product, SIUC Alum—Career brought me to the breadbasket of Mullets and Trans Am.

I have officially banned myself from attending any games at Busch for the betterment of the team cause my career record at old and new busch is something like 1-25.

I went to Carbondale, too. Where are you from in Central Illinois? After school I lived/worked in Bloomington for a few years.

Luckily for me, my record at the Busches is very much different. I usually go to about five games a year here, and I can’t remember the last one the Cubs lost. Perhaps I should write someone in the Cubs organization…

Mullets and Trans Am, huh? I’m going to guess… Alton or are you on the MO side?

I’m going to school at SIU-Edwardsville, but live on the Missouri side.

I think the percentage of Cubs-Cards fans dramatically increases on the Illinois side of the river, because I see more people wearing Cubs hats or shirts in Edwardsville than around St. Louis.

Absolutely.

In fact, when I first moved here there was an very weak AM radio station out of Fairview Heights, 880, I think, that was a Cubs affiliate. I don’t think they broadcast the games anymore, but I think they did it just for the students at SIUE. I always thought it was hysterical that I could pick up the Cubs in downtown St. Louis if the conditions were just right!

Oh man do I miss 880. I can get about ten seconds at a time on 720 when, I’m guessing, cloud cover is just right, but it’s few and far between. I heard just enough last night to know Lee walked in the tying run.

Cubs Fans In Cardinal Land

Yes, it can be difficult to root for the Cubs surrounded by Cardinals fans. I love seeing that “W” flag. Cardinals fans have made me sick over the years by wearing T-shirts that say “Choke: The Official Soft Drink of the Chicago Cubs”. I got sick of looking at that 2006 World Championship merchandise. Oh, you don’t know how much I would love to shove 2008 Cubs world championship stuff in those Cardinals fans’ faces. I’ll be in St. Louis July 4-5 to watch the Cubs.

I love it.

I have one hanging in my office (er… home office… the joys of working from home) which I received as a birthday gift a few years back. It’s right above the autographed Z photo I won at Wrigley a couple years ago. It nice to have those things around to remind me of spring during the long Canadian winters.

I'm a cube rat myself, but I'm not much of a decorator.

I have a framed picture of my best friend and I in the bleachers at Wrigley during a night game in Sept. ‘06. Let’s just say there a LOT of empty seats behind us. The best part of the picture, though, is the player’s name on the electronic sign under the scoreboard: HANK WHITE. Avg. 248, HR 5, RBI 26. I also have all my ticket stubs from the last few years pinned to one wall.
