What Dome says on his diary....

Many of you may know Dome has his official website and writes dialy almost once or twice a month (pls don't call it monthly or biweekly, not diary). All the contents are in Japanese and some of you might try Google Translate or other services and end up getting somewhat ridiculous result... so here's some summary of his latest diary, as of June 2nd .

  • Cubs rocks on winning streak and enjoying great atmosphere in the team. Feeling it doesn't matter if we are behind by a couple of runs, especially at Wrigley.
  • Cubs fans are too great. Happy with All Star voting result, even early stage.
  • It was fun to face Saito and Kuroda of Dodgers - I knew them too much (as played in same league) but it was fun. Having Japanese players in opponent team is somewhat strange feeling - motivated? fun? ...no, I'm just interested to see what they are doing in the game.
  • Felt nostalgic so much when playing (High school alumni) Kaz Matsui on the same field, as we've never played in a game since high school days. Talked a lot with him, mostly about foods and restaurants, no baseball topics at all.
  • I still don't feel my normal self yet in the game, still feel a bit strange. I don't feel tired at all, and playing 12 or more games in a row doesn't matter to me. I'm playing baseball everyday since I was a small kid. Just spending time on stretching as long as I can to maintain my condition.
  • 2 months since the opening day - time flies so fast. So many games ahead, and I will do my best without injury. (To Japanese fans) watch I play even you are too sleepy ;-)

Hope we can watch him holding his new baby on his new diary.

Fukudome

As great as he has been, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is dissapointed in his start, only 3 homers, he seems to be striking out more recently, I think he has a better sense of the strike zone than the umpires which isn’t always an advantage, its pretty cool to think that as good as he has been he still can be even better.

Thanks for the translation

When he’s interviewed post-game with the interpreter, usually the answers are short and a little guarded. This diary entery was a little lightweight but more personal.

I still don’t feel my normal self yet in the game, still feel a bit strange.

I wonder what that means… as in “it’s so weird to be here” or “something’s still not right”...

Love that he feels, like the team feels, that a few runs down doesn’t mean anything. And here’s hoping his “normal self” is even better. Especially down the stretch.

Yes, please continue to keep us posted

this gives new insight into Dome’s personality. He seems to be a very down to earth guy and he’s got to be going through so much right now—the long absence of his family (especially with a new baby. How great is it that they are now finally reunited?), acculturating to American baseball and living in the United States, meeting so many new people while not speaking the language. It’s a lot and yet he’s focusing where he needs to focus and getting the job done beautifully.

I agree with Jeff Pico, it’s pretty cool to think he can do even better.

Kosuke is a bright spot in a bright year

One of those people who does something so well and gracefully that it’s a pleasure to watch him.

And I’m sure he’s got a lot to get used to here. Much longer-distance travel, a completely different culture, and lots of stuff he probably just doesn’t quite get (a train in the outfield? sausage races? Harry Caray?). After he stops seeing everything for the first time, he’ll probably be more relaxed. His fundamentals are so good that he probably only has upside. Which is a really pleasant thought.

Thanks Dragonsfanatic!

Anyone notice

that both Chicago play-by-play men, Len Kasper and Pat Hughes, both refer to Fukudome almost exclusively as “Kosuke”? “Fly ball to right, Kosuke makes the catch.” Next batter is Kosuke, who walked his time up.” Are they avoiding saying “Fukudome? Or trying to make this a kind of “Ichiro” thing?

(On the other hand, it seems like Santo and Brenly-and Piniella-say Fukudome most of the time.)

Japanese tradition is to call by first name...

Hence why Ichirio Suzuki is simply known as Ichiro. And in Japan Kosuke Fukudome was simply known as Kosuke.

by MDBNIU on Jun 5, 2008 9:33 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Our tradition is rather call by family name....

Most of Japanese people don’t know Dome’s first name, unless he or she is hard core baseball fan or Dragons fan, I believe.
Ichiro’s case was special and he was the trailblazer to using first name in Japanese baseball. His family name Suzuki is the second most popular in Japan (Sato is ranked 1st, Takahashi is 3rd), so he just wanted himself to stick out, then he asked his ball club to call him Ichiro officially in the game. After him, there are 10+ NPB ball players officially called by first name with the admire for Ichiro. Allthe others are called by family name, but we use lots of nicknames mostly.

And right, we use Dome or Kosuke as it’s easier to call than 4 syllables Fukudome, in bleacher chant.

Our tradition in the US

is also to call the players by their family names, especially in this context (play-by-play announcing). This is what prompted the question. While the announcers will refer to players as “Alfonso” or “Ryan” occassionally, almost all of the time when describing the action on the field they will use their family names.

Many thanks for the knowledge of Japanese customs—it is strange to think that casual Japanese fans wouldn’t know Dome’s first name.

by JohnM on Jun 5, 2008 11:04 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right

Ichiro is often called by Suzuki, or Ichiro Suzuki in US… No Japanese fans refer him as Suzuki as of now, so it’s a bit funny situation – I’ve been watching baseball in US and Japan more than 30 years but it is very unique case.

It depends how casual the fan is to know Dome’s first name or not, obviously, but I guess who knows his nickname should know his first name, at least.

I'm bleeding Dragons Blue.

by dragonsfanatic on Jun 5, 2008 11:26 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think...

... almost every American baseball fan calls Ichiro “Ichiro”, since he’s been marketed that way in the US. But that’s a unique situation.

I meant

he is referred as Suzuki on media article, box scores and by ballpark announcers. No one refer him as Suzuki including those in Japan.

The exception to the rule

would be players with unique names not heard often in baseball/American society. Not that the first name takes precedence, but Aramis is called by solely his first name more often than players with names such as Derrek, Ryan, etc.

Yeah, I use "Aramis" almost exclusively now.

It’s a very distinctive name. I’ve started using “Alfonso” more than “Soriano”, too, also because there aren’t exactly a lot of other Alfonso’s in baseball. And I’ve never been pleased with any of Alfonso’s prospective nicknames. For instance, I will never, ever call him “Alf.”

Nothing wrong with the Fonz

It’s just that he owns the name Fonz so completely that calling another guy who is also larger than life the same name creates an unwanted pop cultural mashup. Don’t wanna think about Mr C. and Ralph Malph and Arnold’s when Soriano is blasting bombs and dropping bloops.

Thank u Dragon! I am a lifetime Cubs fan and also have a Japanese wife. I got married overseas while I was in the Marine Corps. She was hesistant to join me and my sons as Cubs fans until Fukudome’s arrival! She is still a big Matsui and Ichiro fan but I catch her reading Fukudome’s diary all the time. Anyway, thank u for the translation…can tell by ur info that u are the real deal. I also spent 4 years in Japan and we visit the in-laws once a year.

Yep...originally from Paxton, IL

Funny thing…we used to live near Chatan-cho in Ginowan City years ago. My wife is from Furujima in Naha City. Anyway…arigato gozaimasu…yoroshiku onegai itashimasu. My romaji is not that great I know. My oldest son always gives me a hard time. I have 3 sons…all bilingual. And everyone in my house is a Cubs and Bears fan! It’s funny that my wife loves football…probably more than baseball.

So you are my ex-neighbors… worked for Futenma, Foster or Lester?
This delicious and classical Okinawa soba place “Shimujo” is close to Furujima intersection (right next to Sueyoshi Park), so you should visit here next time…

I have several Japanese friends who are in US and their kids and found they cannot communicate in Japanese… Suppose that too hard, but baseball should be the universal language.
