2008 Pre-Draft Discussion Diary
Here's your chance to discuss who the Cubs should take with their first pick, the 19th choice, in the Amateur Draft tomorrow.
We've picked five guys who we think the Cubs might pick, but feel free to toss in your own names and scouting reports. With the 19th pick, we're all doing a lot of guesswork here.
Here are the scouting reports on our suggestions to get the debate started.
Oh, and it might be a good idea to recommend this diary so it's still up by draft time tomorrow.
Casey Kelly, SS/RHP Sarasota (FL) HS
Gerrit Cole, RHP Orange Lutheran (CA) HS
Josh Fields, RHP University of Georgia
Jake Odorizzi, RHP Highland (IL) HS
Anthony Hewitt, SS Salisbury (CT) School
Have at it!

In Kevin Goldstein's Mock Draft,
he has the Cubs taking Odorizzi. He writes ($$):
Scouting director Tim Wilken loves athletes, but many of the Cubs’ top targets are looking like they’ll be unavailable when the draft reaches them. So they may instead go with someone who has been a slow and steady riser, as the Cubs have been in on hard and heavy to see the last few starts by Illinois high school star Jake Odorizzi. He has the kind of velocity, command, and clean mechanics rarely seen from the cold-weather states. Odorizzi has been even better than ever down the stretch, consistently touching 95 mph with his fastball while showing a much-improved breaking ball. He’s not a hometown pick per se; Highland is actually only 35 miles from St. Louis. The Cubs passed on the best Midwest high school arm last year when they opted to take Josh Vitters over Jarrod Parker; they won’t let him go by this time.
Goldstein also had interesting things to say about Cole and Hewitt on Monday ($$). Cole has hit 100, but has troubling arm action and makeup issues. What Goldstein wrote about Hewitt was just fun, so I’ll quote that in full:
I have to confess, Anthony Hewitt is my favorite player in the draft. Not because he’s the best player, mind you, as he’s far from that. It’s because you can’t have a conversation with any scout, scouting director, or team official without Hewitt being proclaimed as quite possibly the messiah once again descending to earth… or an absolutely horrible baseball player. There’s seemingly no in between with Hewitt. It started a couple of weeks ago, when a scout threw a Bo Jackson body comp on him. Just to be clear, there are some teams that don’t even allow Bo Jackson body comps, as he was arguably the only player ever with 80 raw power, 80 speed, and an 80 arm. Then there’s the Hanley Ramirez player comp, the tale of the 500-plus foot home runs, the 4.15 running time to first while slipping out of the box and I’m pretty sure something about him turning water into wine. Then there’s the scouting director who, when I inquired as to his inability to hit the breaking ball, told me, “Breaking balls? Hell, he can’t hit anything.” Some say that no player has had a bigger gap between tools and skills in recent draft history, but there are a bunch of teams who can’t find any player they love in the second half of the first round who are deciding to simply gamble on a great athlete with a ton of ceiling, and Hewitt fits that bill perfectly.
I’m quoting a little liberally from a subscriber site, but I think the latter is the kind of quote that is likely to convince people to subscribe.
Hewitt
might not be around when the Cubs pick at #19. He might still be available when the Cubs pick in the third round.

Had the Cubs taking Kelly. I just wish the Cubs one of these years, just once find a player like Hanley Ramirez or Jay Bruce, just once say in 7 years. I mean Vitters is hurt and who knows when he will return. But it is early with Vitters, it is just the Cubs have had really poor drafts when if comes to position players.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
Hanley's Dominican
so he was never drafted. Bruce was taken eight picks before the Cubs got a pick (Mark Pawelek) in the 2005 draft, so we never had a chance at him
As far as Vitters goes, he’s not hurt anymore and is playing games in Extended Spring Training. The Cubs are probably waiting for Boise to start up and will send him there.

Good call on Ramirez
Just frustration on the Cubs lack of getting quality everyday players

kelly
doesnt look all that enticing after reading his scouting report, saying the only question is wether or not he cant hit? I hope he can hit if you’re taking him in the first round, he better be Ozzie Smith otherwise.
The Aramis BB/K Watch: 34 walks to 34 strikeouts. Im not sure who the last Cub to have more bb's than k's was, but Im sure it was a very long time ago.
I don't know about Ozzie level
but awhile ago I read something saying that his defense is nearly major league ready already. I agree with you though, I’m a little scared off by the bat. He’s also supposed to be a decent pitcher so if the hitting isn’t there, he can try the mound.
As it approaches, my take.....
Kelly – The bat is concerning me. I think I might pass here.
Cole – Another pass for me. He looks like he needs some major work on that delivery.
Fields – A closer. Sorry, I’ll pass here too.
Odorizzi – I like him. Smooth delivery and looks like he could nicely bulk up.
Hewitt – I don’t know. Big possible upside but lots of questions. The Cubs have been burned here before.
The other one that intrigues me is Zach Collier.
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2008/reports.jsp?content=collier
The Cubs also have pick #41. I’d hope for a big upside guy at either 19 or 41. Other than Vitters, last year’s draft was heavily college guys. I’d hope for a better mix this year.
Collier
Ive seen the cubs take him in a couple mocks. I like that pick if he were to fall to us, short compact swing and good power, more to come? Im hoping he drops to us and we snatch him up. We’ll have an opening at a corner spot by the time this guy is ready for the big leagues.
The Aramis BB/K Watch: 34 walks to 34 strikeouts. Im not sure who the last Cub to have more bb's than k's was, but Im sure it was a very long time ago.
Collier
is pretty raw too. But he would have been a good choice to throw in the mix for the Cubs. Like I said, I’m just trying to get the conversation started.

And I agree with your list
I just really hope that the pick isn’t Fields. That’s the safe, small market pick to me.
Fields
looks like he’s out of the Marmol mold. Sits comfortably at 94 with the fastball, fair command but good command with the curve. Tight, hammer curve at 80.
The Aramis BB/K Watch: 34 walks to 34 strikeouts. Im not sure who the last Cub to have more bb's than k's was, but Im sure it was a very long time ago.
Being from Sarasota...
...and knowing the Sailors baseball tradition, Kelly will play, and well. I’m rooting for him just because I’d love to see another hometown guy make it….
Here's another name
Keith Law on ESPN just said the names he’s hearing connected with the Cubs are Kelly, Odorizzi and Brett Lawrie.
Of course, I’ve also heard that Lawrie won’t last to us, but he’s a name to consider if he drops. I’ve also heard there’s no way in the world he stays at catcher.

Lawrie
I’ve seen both points of view on him remaining at catcher. If he has to move then where? 3rd base? Is his power good enough if his position is 1st base?
He might
he’s a little hard to project because these Canadians just don’t play often enough to get a good read on them.
I think he could be a left fielder or a first baseman. Right field is not completely out of the question.

FYI...
... I posted a main-page poll on this topic.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
I'm not sure I see the value of a poll for the MLB draft...
99% of us (and that might be an underestimate) don’t know a thing about these guys, me included. And none of them are likely to be MLB-ready for at least 3-4 years anyway (if ever), right?
True, I suppose.
But the previous poll was getting kinda old. If you (or anyone else) have any poll ideas for me, let’s hear ‘em!

Sorry, didn't mean to come off as a debbie downer!
I realize after I posted that it seemed snippy of me. Sorry about that. Just a pet peeve about overexcitement about the baseball draft.
No, I’ve got no better ideas. I’m only good for critiques, not creativity!
It's not like
it hurts anybody. :-)
That’s why we gave links to the scouting reports on MLB.com. People can read them, watch the video and have an opinion. Maybe not a real informed opinion, but enough to have a discussion if we’re civil. :-)

Fair enough...
Carry on then. I’ll just politely abstain, given my lack of knowledge of the players available and the degree to which the draft is a guessing game anyway.
I understand It's not for everyone but
I enjoy watching the prospects develop over the years. We can have our one diary where people not interested can stay away :-)
By the way, if you want instant gratification hope for the Cubs to take Fields. He could see major league action by next year sometime.
I love seeing players develop...
I just didn’t personally see the value in picking a player before the draft. But as I said, carry on. It’s just not for me.
Though I don’t have an opinion on who we should draft, I certainly hope that whoever is chosen turns out to be the best choice available. And I’ll certainly follow the progress once the player reaches the minors..
Fields
Could be pitching in the majors in September, if he signs quickly enough.

Fields Could Begin at AA
Fields is the only guy on the list that I have actually seen. He pitched against Miss State in Starkville. Fields could start his pro career at AA because of his college experience at Georgia. He’s got a lot of raw talent. For a college pitcher, he has good command of the curve ball. He needs to work on that more in the minors. I think he will be in the majors some time in 2009.

Any chance
Field’s gets turned into a starter. I thought I read somewhere he might be, depending on the team.

I suppose it's possible
but I would think if you wanted a starting pitcher, you’d just draft someone else.

Late Night News
Apparently the Rays long decision between Buster Posey, C, Florida State and Tim Beckham, SS Griffin HS (GA) is over. They’re going with Beckham because Posey wants $12 million.
It’s not a bad decision—a lot of draft experts were saying it was a mistake to take Posey over Beckham in the first place, money aside. But most mock drafts have been made with the assumption that Posey would go to Tampa Bay at #1. This shakes things up a bit, unless Posey softens his money demands by tomorrow morning.
Now to answer your question: No. I do not believe there is any realistic chance that Posey slides all the way down to #19. But this does shake up the draft and someone else could fall.

More News
I’ve read in a couple of places that the Cubs infatuation with Casey Kelly has been overstated, and that he may not be their choice, even if he’s on the board.
Two more names I’ve seen in mock drafts this morning.
Keith Law at ESPN has us taking Andrew Cashner, RHP, TCU, a college reliever who throws 98 mph and Baseball America predicts Tim Melville, RHP, Wentzville Holt HS (MO).
It's a girl! Born 1-18-08. 2246 PST. 8 lbs. 1 oz.
I got the sense that Melville might be gone
but he’d be fine too. No to Cashner for the same reason as Fields. I don’t like taking college relievers in the first round.
Melville not likely at 19 per John Manuel at Baseball America
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=288
I hadn’t heard a lot of buzz about Melville in the first round in many of the mocks I have been seeing. He seems more likely to be available at the supplemental 1st pick though. Wonder if the Cubs would take a flier on him there, though he’s reportedly demanding top 15 bonus money to sign?
