How About Aaron Cook?
I know it is a bit less than fanpost worthy but I commented earlier and it was buried in my last post.
According to MLBTR, he may become available. I liked what I saw of him in the recent series and think he would be a solid addition to our rotation. I know many here think that we are fine with our current rotation but I beg to differ.
What say you on Aaron Cook? Can Hendry offer enough? Is he worth it?

I can see this happening
Just my opinion, but we all know the Rocks are going to unload. I am hearing he is gonna go, why not unload some of our minor league talent and Marquis for this stud

Your poll isn't quite right.
I think Cook would inprove the rotation, but we probably don’t have enough to offer.
The poster above said “Marquis”. Why would the Rockies want him?

You can change it Al...
I see what you mean but, why wouldn’t the Rox be interested in some of our minor league talent? Especially if they may end up unloading Holliday.

Marquis they might be interested in....
...Colorado’s pitchers should be good at getting groundball outs, and if Marquis shows some form later in the year, his sinkerball style could fit in well there

As an added bonus
Cook has some, by marriage, Chicago roots. He married into one of my best friends families and I got to meet him back in ‘03, he’s a nice guy if that counts for anything.

Interesting.
I doubt Cook has any say in where he’s traded, but that does give an extra boost if the Cubs do acquire him, to keep him here.

Getting Cook might be possible.
It will be interesting to see what players become avialable as we get closer to the deadline.
At this point everyone is a long shot. Im sure Hendry will get someone. July should be fun.

Hey Kinky Reggae: You liked what you saw of Aaron Cook in the recent series???????
What exactly did you like?
The 10 hits?
The 7 runs? or
The 3 HRs?
Put down the spliff….

Ya Mon!
It was the 10 hits, 7 runs, 3 HRs!
I thought he had nice control over his pitches, he seemed to be rather unhittable most of the game, and I most definitely like his 8 and 3 record and his very low ERA.
But hey, I will put down the spliff when I am good and ready mon!

I would love Aaron Cook
Problem is I dont’ think we have enough to offer Colorado if they do indeed become serious about trading him. They would want a couple blue chip pitching prospects at a mininum I believe. We don’t have the commodity in our minor league system right now. Donald Veal and Jeff Smardizija aren’t going to get it done. Doubt they would have interest in Rich Hill given the ballpark they play in.

Nah...
Looking at his numbers, he looks like a slightly better but less durable version of Jason Marquis. Heavy sinker with much better command and would benefit from being away from Coors field but he has only pitched 200 innings once in his career. Not sure if that is the kinda guy you wanna deal away young talent for.
Which is why I will make my case for Rich Harden….
Yes, I completely understand his DL past. I know he has been a DL mainstay for the last 2-3 years. However, he is pitching well this year and, given his injury history, I don’t think he will require the same bounty as C.C. Sabathia. Watch Harden for the next 2 months and if he still has it, I would go after him because he has 2009 on his current contract at like 4-5 mil a year. That gives the Cubs a full year and a half to see if he is over his injury problems and then decide to offer a long-term deal or not. I know its a stretch but he is terrific when healthy.

I do think Harden would be a good gamble to take for the 2nd half
but i’m not sure he’s worth what billy beane will be demanding, or if we even have it in the system. he’s still not budging on the price for blanton, i can only imagine he’ll ask a lot for harden after a string of recent good starts

Get Rich Harden
His addition would cost a huge boatload. No question also that he is an injury risk. But a 1-2 punch of Zambrano and Harden in the rotation would be devastatingly good come playoff time.

Actually....
The word on ESPN and other sites is that Harden, because of his injury past, isn’t going to cost as much as you’d think. Perhaps just one good prospect. If the price is that or even slightly above, he’s well worth the risk, he’s dominating when he makes the mound.

I think the Dodgers will be there in the end...
And ahead of St. Louis. The Dodgers have a lot of good pitching. They get their offense sorted out and they should start humming the 2nd half. They really miss Rafael Furcal. Joe Torre is too good of a manager for that group of guys to finish disappointing. So yeah, I like the Dodgers to be one of the four National League teams who ultimately makes the playoffs.

Aaron Cook is a decent pitcher
He would be a step up from Marquis and Gallagher, but keep in mind that his stats are currently buoyed by pitching above his head in April, when he went 4-1 with a 2.41 ERA. Since then he’s been the same pitcher he’s always been – ERA in the mid-4’s, solid dependable back of the rotation guy. When it’s all said in done, he’ll finish the year with an ERA+ around the 115 mark like he always does.
He certainly isn’t the #2 starter that people here believe the Cubs need.
by Wreckard on Jun 6, 2008 3:45 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He's still a consistent pitcher unlike Marquis.
He gives you 5-7 inning starts about 8/10 times.

Oh, right.
I missed the DFA note in your headline. Ponson has had numerous disciplinary problems over his career, and if the Rangers - who desperately need pitching - dumped him, I can’t imagine why any other team would want him at this point.
This isn’t fantasy baseball where you can just plug in numbers and help your team improve. This is real life with real people. Sidney Ponson is a headcase who, despite obvious talent, has been dumped by six different teams.
Forget it.

Randy Wolf
As I have said before I don’t think Maddux is leaving but if the Pads ( who are playing a lot
better and in a VERY weak division) are out of it by deadline Towers is shopping him
He is on a one year contract. He will certainly cost but I think a LOT less than most other
suggestions. I know he is not a # 2 but other than Hudson who is going NOWHERE,
Sabathia who will cost some dumb team a lot and is not pitching that well or the much mentioned oft injurred and Harden, I think he is the best choice out there.
I have a funny habit of wanting players who are actually likely to be available and
affordable.

Agreed
I think being in a “win now” mentality, the club ought to be willing to part with what they need to to improve our chances. Not saying there are no limits of course but…I would be awfully flexible at this point if I were Hendry.
How does that make you feel?
by Kinky Reggae on Jun 7, 2008 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
" affordable " was a relative term
We all know nothing will happen soon. It is going to depend on which teams are out of it
or at least selling by mid-late July and the value and contracts of who they have. Hudson I am
nearly certain has some time to go on his contract so I can’t see the Braves shopping him.
I don’t know Cook’s status. Guy’s like Wolf on one year contracts ( or in the last year of a contract)
are clearly going to be available. It is all relative. For instance I would think the Padres might
be happy with Murton and Pie which I think would be overpaying BUT since neither seems to have any place with the Cubs
For today’s update on pitchers mentioned by posters, Bonderman is out for the season
and Burnett got rocked for 8 runs in 4.1 innings.

by Kinky Reggae on Jun 7, 2008 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No that was Pie and Murton for Wolf
Maddux as I have explained endlessly is probably not coming but
IF he were , Murton alone OR some decent prospect would do it because
Towers like Hendry before him will do whatever it takes to get him where he
wants to go.
Wolf may well be in pretty high demand come trade deadline. Personally I think
that would be too much but realistically we show NO signs of using either one of them
so if they get you a good “rent a starter” you may want to do it,

To quote from CITIZEN KANE
“Maybe yes, maybe no”
We just don’t know the situation by trade deadline and I don’t see the Cubs doing
anything before then. If Lilly is back to Lilly 07 and Dempster stays at Dempster
08 than you are good shape for the postseason IF you make it. You still need some
solid 3 & 4 pitchers and right now I certainly don’t trust Marquis and Gallagher is just way to unknown.
I said I thought that would be too much for Wolf but realistically the Cubs HAVE
to trade Murton because they are NEVER going to use him and he has value,
Pie that is a little harder but Lou certainly does not care for him so while you and
I may believe Murton and Pie have significant value, the Cubs don’t appear to so
trading them for 2 plus months of Wolf is not as unbalanced as it seems depending on need.
My overall point though was that I think Wolf is a realistic starting pitcher to go for
not a scrap heap like Ponson, Traschel etc and attainable unlike CC & Hudson.
Anyway about 7 weeks to deadline A LOT CAN HAPPEN
