Soriano "dinger"?

And if someone without Lee's wingspan isn't at first, the ball is in the dugout and it doesn't matter who the ump is.
Ehhhh
I also agree w/ THAT throw and of course there have been others but if you’re going to tell me that then I assume you believe he’s saved Rammy’s ass just as much, if not more.

Kent ground up the middle, Theriot gets to it, throws
over. It’s bang-bang play, but Hernandez is calling Kent safe before he even touches the bag, so it doesn’t matter.

Theriot throws wide of Lee, Lee leans over to make the catch.
Ump rules him safe, but replay looks like Lee got the ball just before Kent got there. Of course, ump couldn’t see the ball in Lee’s glove like we could on the replay.
bang bang play
not a chance in hell we’re gonna get them with this retarded crew

Bad call by the ump haunts the Cubs.
Interesting that Piniella says we haven’t gotten a close call yet in the series. Given that managers get in trouble for criticizing the umps, that’s saying something.
IF IT TAKES FOREVER!!
when you are in a pitcher's ballpark
and the umps keep making calls that cost us a run each game, it really gets under your skin.
let’s just post a crooked number and put this one in our rear view mirror. then the umps won’t matter…hopefully.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
What happened to him?
Seems he disappeared after he went to Florida. I can’t argue with THAT trade by the Cubs.

Soto caught him stealing. It was a short hop that Theriot fielded then put down the tag really quick, actually
a good play to make that tag. He was out. The ball snow-coned a bit, but Theriot snapped it up so quick that the ball popped out. The umpire called him safe because he was “juggling” the ball.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
That's a bad call, but Theriot needed to be more careful with the ball.
I’ve never actually seen that call outside of an NFL game….

interpretation please for the ignorant...
am I reading this right? Theriot gets on base more, but Neiffi (gulp) had more power?
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Yes. A lot more power.
There are few players in the history of organized baseball who have shown less power than what Theriot is showing this season. I ran a quick count this morning – something like 6,000 ballplayers with over 100 PAs have had an OBP higher than their SLG. 4,000 of those were before 1954.

as well on defense on the road as we do at home. everyone just seems to lack a bit of concentration on the road. in these close games, it just kills us.

At no point this season has Theriot been playing acceptable defense at short.
Home, road, day, night, whatever you want to look at. It’s only in games like this that people notice. People don’t seem to be noticing all the balls that skate past him.
can you project what his numbers would be at 2B?
assuming they’d improve at least a little bit, how would he stack up compared to rest of league? and DeRosa?
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Dunno.
The confouding factor is his arm.
But, presumably, DeRosa would still be better than him defensively. Certainly better offensively.
yea, I figured range would be range, no matter what, but maybe throwing from 2b would be easier with that weak arm
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Soto has thrown out quite a few
runners, therefore, Theriot has caught a few throws to second. It just seems that Theroit looks more confident on the field at home. On the road he is much more passive and doesn’t charge balls, etc…
But it is not just Theriot, it seems everyone is a bit off on the road.

All should be unearned
should’ve been the second out, and the popup should have ended the inning.
Oops, nevermind...
Because the official scorer inexplicably gave the hitter a hit, the error didn’t technically cost us an out. So the runs are all earned.
Now, if you ask me, that’s a generous “hit” call. If the throw is good, the batter is out by a step. So the runs SHOULD have been unearned, but they are earned. Doesn’t really matter either way.

I agree that at .500
on the road (overall), this should be a very successful Cub team, but let’s not forget that we have only won two series on the road this year. So my concern is that with 23 games coming up on the road (including this trip), I just hope we can go 12-11 or better, not 10-13, which could make for a tough month.
We all forget that the Cubs are actually 7-13 on the road since beating the Pirates in the first series this year. So the fact that we already won 3 on this 7 game trip was a big improvement on the last few trips.
I am not complaining…just hoping for better focus on the road.

cmon.. all we need to do
is get Dome and Soto on, and then the Cajun Ninja can hit a sneaky grand-slam.

I am not able to watch the game
but a good through to second is not one were the SS has to dig it out of the dirt and then try to make a tag
It was not in the dirt. Don't try and defend Theriot if you didn't see it.

No, that was per McCarver's idiocy.
I didn’t short hop; it hopped to him and he tried to tag before he had the ball, causing the ball to bounce from his mitt.

The first one was a bad play by Theriot too...
it wasn’t a perfect throw, but it got there in plenty of time, was a reasonable hop (about six inches off the ground). A good SS makes that play.
and from what else i can tell its not just theriot
ARAM made the throwing error and Zambrano gave up the homeruns. We talk about this team picking each other up. Doesn’t appear to be the case today
Yes, it's not just Theriot...
I will accept that statement. But to try to absolve Theriot of blame in this is wrong too.
which I am definetly not doing
I was pissed at him for last night as well. I am just sick of this its all Theriots fault attitude around here.
Definitely seems like it with your first post in this thread
I don’t think people are saying it’s all Theriot’s fault. There are people who think Theriot is wonderful, and people are just pointing out when he screws up (which is happening somewhat often lately).
I merely stated
a good throw to second is not one where a SS has to pick it out of the dirt and then try to apply a tag. Would you or would you not agree with that?
I know what you said...
Don’t try to dance around the fact that we both know your implication there.
Both of Soto’s throws were good. Considering that you have admitted to not having seen either throw, perhaps you aren’t in the best position to make a claim about them.
Define pick out of the dirt.
Do you mean a short hop right on the money (which that one was0 or a D lee picking a theriot throw kind of pick? Because theres a BIG difference.

You also admitted you haven't seen the play, so why try and argue the point with those of us who have?
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
because it is you
who have made the comments about the throw being in the dirt. I wouldn’t be here if I couldn’t take your word for it.
Both throws were good ones...
The first one was in the dirt, but in plenty of time and a pretty easy ball to catch. That makes it a good throw.
The second one was knee high – also a good throw.
So I'm a liar?!?!?!
LMAO at your ignorance.

Which as I now read, doesn’t mean what I thought it did. LMAO at my ignorance.

The first drop was a tough play...
but probably should have been made. The second one however, was knee-high and absolutely should have been caught.
Exactly.

It wasn't in the dirt.
Theriot waved at it in the air and then made the tag while the ball just kept on flying past him.
one of them was a short hopper
but they were both GOOD throws. he just has to HANG on to the ball.

Exactly...
the first one wasn’t an easy play, but definitely a catchable ball. It was a pretty good throw and Theriot had plenty of time. The second one was just a terrible play by Theriot.
if he is MLB shortstop, he has to make those plays

Right...
that first throw wasn’t perfect, but it was certainly good enough. A good SS has to make that play.

Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Zambro is a mental case,
He’s always been a mental case, and will always be a mental case. That’s not the point, the point is can Lou get him harnessed enough to keep his emotions in check when they need him in pressure situations.
Errors in clutch situations has been the bane of the Cubs for years. Theriot has got to get better defensively or we are in need of a shortstop.
Don't blow it boys!
We have a replacement for Riot
Ronny Cedeneo.
I’d like to see you call Z a head-case to his face. Because, ironically, he’d probably just laugh in yours, and walk away.

if defense is absolutley everything
shouldnt we get rid of soriano
theriots batting average(best on the team) doesnt count for anything?
Sori's in LF
A position where you traditionally hide weak defensive players (see: Manny, Barry Bonds, etc).
SS needs a good defender. I’m OK with Theriot, but wanting to replace him is understandable
not when he doesn't hit for power.
Eventually, opposing teams are going to slide to plug that hole he hits through, then he’ll be back to his .230-.250 average.

in the 2 hole
not everyone is exactly looking for power
all of his singles ( signs of a lead off hitter?
you don't put Theriot first
because Soriano is the leadoff hitter. He hits very well in that position, and not extremely well in others.

im not saying he should
but you cant ask him to hit for power if he is a true leadoff hitter
in the 2 hole i think he doing fine
...
I don’t understand this point of view at all.

The team sucked offensively
Until it changed, then they went out of their minds. It wasn’t just the number of games, it was how bad they were during those games.
either his offense or his defense
have to be great.
Neither are.

Z is out there trying to win
but I would say he was well focused today. I saw little evidence that he lost his cool.
Maybe Lou left him out there for 2 extra batters, but blame that on the fielders for not making plays. That inning should have been over long ago. Don’t put that inning on Z. Z did not blow his cool until he left the game. Nothing wrong with that.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
Asking Zambrano to check his emotions
is like asking Brett Favre to stop throwing so many interceptions. He just isn’t the same player unless he is who he is. You just have to take the good with the bad. Accept it.
Cotts
does pretty well, again. That’s good.

Zambrano is probably a very good teammate,
and I have no problems with his emotions, as long as he knows when to keep his head straight in crucial situations. Taking out his anger on the Gatorgade is not using your head and could get you hurt. That is not smart. But I love his competitiveness and his desire to win. It’s learning when to fold em, and when to hold em that worries me.
