and we used only two pitchers….Get them tomorrow.

by DudeVf11 on Jun 7, 2008 5:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

This was a bad loss,

because it was a “Cub loss,” i.e., error after error, pitcher loses his composure, and team gives up a big inning. Yesterdays loss (3-0 Dodgers) was not a “Cub loss,” but a loss that happens to every good team. Today’s was different, and I hope it doesn’t become a trend.

Hopefully, Marquis will be up to pitching an unchararcteristically good game tomorrow. e don’t need two losses in a row.

And obviously, you’re not really paying that much attention. It’s already been two losses in a row. Tomorrow would be a third loss, if we lose.

A mental day off may or may not help him with catching Soto's throws.

But his inability to make strong throws to first isn’t mental, and that was an issue today as well.

I don't think you can assume Dome makes that play.

That was one he made look a lot closer than most right fielders would’ve; it took talent to even get that close to it. He’s been a top defensive right fielder – everything we’ve been promised and more.

Ramirez has never been that good at throwing over to first – that’s the transaction you make to get his bat into the lineup.

I won’t beat that particular dead horse, at least not in this comment.

Zambrano

Freaking Z should grow up and do something about his temper. Creates a cancer in the clubhouse. reminds me of another ex-cubbie who always put his individual stats ahead of the team. Sure, we all hate to lose, but kicking and screaming doesn’t solve anything and he sure could hurt himself tossing those bottles around. Any other thoughts?

We like him for what he is. He’s good for what he does. Even the most critical of us thinks he is a good 2nd-stringer. I don’t think Cedeno is a very good replacement, but I do hope we can trade for someone who is more championship caliber.

how many pitchers

do we have to HAVE?

Howry and Cotts are set-up guys. Marmol is the fireman, with Howry as a backup. Lieber and Hart are long men (although I dunno if I’d actually trust Hart at this point). Woody is the closer. Eyre is, for lack of… whatever… the LOOGY. And then you have Wuertz.

We don’t need more help in the pen. We need Lilly to get BETTER, and bring in someone to replace Marquis, who can pinch run for the rest of the season, for all I care.

After reading your comments, I expected Theriot to have a couple errors s but only one was charged to ARam. Sounds like Infield singles that should have been outs?

Offense has 3 BB and 18 K in the last two games. Maybe we should try bunting and stealing some bases?

Pinella's post game comments,

from the Trib:

On Zambrano’s dugout tantrum:

“I missed it,” said Piniella, who has thrown a few tantrums himself at times. “I was on the mound and I heard all this commotion. I thought there was a wave going on—but there was no wave. In fact, if I’d have been in the dugout, I probably would have enjoyed it. I went back down in the tunnel to make sure he wasn’t going to hurt himself. It was just frustration, that’s all. He competes and he wants to win. As long as he doesn’t hurt himself, that’s all we care about. I’d rather have a guy who gets upset than a guy that does it with a smile, like he doesn’t care.”

On the 7th inning defensive lapses:

“We seemed to self-destruct that inning. We gave them quite a few outs,” Piniella said. “We’ve got to figure out why Theriot’s dropping balls on tags at second base. That we can’t do. I don’t know how we only ended up (being charged) with one error that inning. I think Zambrano lost his concentration out there, and that was it.”

Zambrano, on his performance:

“I made a mistake. That’s it. You make a mistake in the big leagues, you pay for it,” Zambrano said. “I was angry at myself. I’m the one that has the ball in my hand, and if I have to blame somebody, I blame myself. It’s my fault. Let’s move on.”
