Open Thread: Cubs vs. Dodgers, Saturday 6/7, 2:55 CT
Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers, Jun 7, 2008 2:55 PM CDT
See below for information on who the lucky Fox viewers are who can see today's game (good news: for once, it's most of you).
News from today: self-promoter Mark Cuban says he'll "pull out all the stops" to buy the Cubs. One thing he says that I like:
Cuban also told WMVP-AM 1000 hosts Marc Silverman and Tom Waddle he "definitely would want Wrigley Field to be part of the deal," despite the fact Tribune Co., which is parent of the Chicago Cubs, has considered selling it separately, either to the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority or a private buyer.
Meanwhile, Ryan Dempster says he likes Cuban. Why?
"He's pretty passionate," Dempster said. "It's funny. He kind of gets the reputation as this crazy, wild owner. But when you think about it, all he's ever really done is get kicked out of a couple of NBA games."
Yeah, that's "all". This is the point of making this part of the post. An owner shouldn't do that. Period. And there are nine individuals or groups who have been approved to get the books from Tribune Co. Do you see the other eight going on sports talk radio to promote themselves or their case? Nope, they're too busy going through the financials. I say again: I do realize Mark Cuban is a savvy businessman -- he wouldn't be a billionaire otherwise -- but I do NOT want a Cub owner who makes it all about him, which Cuban would.
Give me Don Levin. Please. He's Mark Cuban without the "Dancing With The Stars" gig. A lifelong Cub fan with deep pockets who wants to win. That's the guy we should be rooting for.

This is the third straight pitching rematch from the Cubs/Dodgers series in Wrigley Field last week; this one was on May 28. Unlike the other two, in that one the Dodgers' starter (Lowe) outpitched the Cubs' starter (Z). Fortunately for the Cubs, they came back against LA's closer, Takashi Saito, in the 9th (with two walks keying the rally) and won the game in 10 innings. I'll take another, please.
Today's game is on Fox. It's Fox's main game, so it's going to 60% of the USA -- the other games are Indians/Tigers and Mariners/Red Sox. Without going through the listings, it appears you'll see the Cubs unless you're in Michigan or Ohio, New England or the Pacific Northwest. For the Fox market listings, go here. For today's other listings see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Soriano VS. Charlie Brown
Soriano keeps trying to hit a slider in futility and Charlie Brown keeps trying to kick the football in the same futility! Where does it end?
I just had to be born in Michigan....
who wants to see the stinkin Tigers? Sigh…. At least I have WGN radio I guess…. Go Cubbies!

Even worse
I’m in the Minneapolis DMA, and stuck in that 10% that gets that crummy Indians/Tigers game.
The worse part is that WGN doesn’t come in here. Minnesota has one Cubs affiliate – Sauk Rapids KBHR, but that doesn’t even come in here, and my 5 day-trial of MLB.tv won’t help me today.
Guess I’m stuck with Gameday…
Moose
Hubbs!

man, at least I can get WGN radio. As bad as the Indians and the Tigers are playing I can’t believe they dare air the game. I will drink a brew to honor you in your situation. As bad as I have it, you have it worse. :(

Let's be the first to 40!
Come on, Z! Nice, long outing today.

would be nice
to get a complete game today and rest that bullpen.

On paper
Looking at the stats you posted for Lowe and Zambrano, this looks like a mismatch. But Lowe is a wily customer, and he’s due for a good start. Hopefully the Cubs’ batters will show up today (and maybe having Z in the lineup will help).

I can tell you that Lowe has looked very good for the last two starts. He is back to the old Lowe.
But given how anemic our offense has looked lately (granted against some tough pitching) and the way we have had tough calls and tough bounces go against us, we are due for some good luck today!!
Go get ‘em Cubbies!! My two dogs and I will be cheering for Z & Co. this afternoon.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
Lowe threw really well in the game at Wrigley, as I said.
And the Cubs beat Saito in the 9th. Z will have to be on his game today.

Joe Buck and Tim McCarver?

I can’t stand Buck and McCarver. Why must they choose the Cubs? But hey, they’re 2-0 on Fox this year.

Re: Cuban - Can someone explain what "all about him" means?
I keep seeing that here, from Al and others. Cuban would make it “all about him”. How could Mark Cuban take a storied franchise, a storied field, and the best fans in baseball and make it all about him? And spare me the George Steinbrenner arguments, unless you don’t want to bring up the championships the Yankees have won while he’s been the owner.
What does it matter whether the owner sits behind the glass curtain of a private box and drinks champagne or sits out in the bleachers and chugs a beer? How does that affect the play on the field? How do you know that Cuban wouldn’t bring in (or retain) smart baseball people to run the team? I understand the owner is in a position to greatly influence the direction of the team, but I see no indication that he would run the Cubs into the ground.
Seems to me Cuban’s pockets are just as deep if not deeper than Levin’s, and I wouldn’t second-guess Cuban’s desire to win at all. Ok, so he isn’t a ‘lifelong’ Cubs fan, but I can’t hold that against him. Sure he’s flamboyant, he’s an egotist, and he’s probably never met a camera he didn’t like. But don’t confuse style with substance – if he’s working towards the same goals and objectives as we are, his personality shouldn’t matter.
It’s okay to have a preference, and it’s clear that many here prefer Levin. Me too – I’d be very happy if he ends up being the owner for all the reasons previously stated here in BCB. But I really don’t understand all the ill will towards Cuban. I guess I’m looking for some substance beyond his ego and personality as to why he’d be a bad owner.

I think I explained it.
But I’ll try again. Do you see any of the other prospective owners on sports talk radio? No, they’re behind the scenes, lining up backers and doing their due diligence.
Maybe Cuban would do all the things you say he would, but I think Don Levin would too, and you’d never see him trying to take center stage.
When Cuban was in the bleachers last September, was it because he was trying to be a fan or trying to connect with us fans? No, it was promoting his appearance on “Dancing With The Stars”.
I don’t want that. I want the Cubs to be about the Cubs and baseball, not about the owner.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
I'm not arguing any of those points, but I don't see how that affects the play on the field
So what if he’s in the bleachers promoting Dancing with the Stars? How does that affect the play on the field?
There’s a big Bud Light sign outside the bleacher entrance. And a CBOE on the brick wall. And Under Armour in the outfield. And the specter of naming rights constantly looms over Wrigley Field. But as I think you’ve so eloquently argued here before, that doesn’t affect the play on the field and doesn’t detract from your enjoyment of the game. I understand an owner is a bit more animated than signage, but I still don’t see how Cuban’s style and personality could get in the way of the Cubs being the Cubs.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
While I agree with you,
I think what’s really going on here is Cuban trying to pit Zell against the MLB owners. Zell obviously wants to sell to the highest bidder, but the MLB owners don’t want to let just anyone with money into heir little club, most especially Mark Cuban. Cuban knows this, so he’s going to get it out there, whether it’s true or not, that he’s got the most money, but Bud and Jerry just don’t want him in the club. It’s a shrewd maneuver.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
Totally agree. There's a whole lot of maneuvering going on here...
In some ways, it resembles the Red Sox deal, but there were charitable considerations in that deal, the Yawkey Trust or Foundation or something like that? So Henry was kinda forced to up his offer a bit, though I still think it wasn’t the highest offer.
No such charity aspects with Zell. He wants his money and lots of it. And I’m pretty sure he’ll fight for it. So it’ll be very interesting to see how MLB convinces him NOT to take the highest offer. If that happens, that may finally be the straw that breaks MLB’s anti-trust exemption status or whatever that label is they always hide behind when the kitchen gets hot.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I'm not sure that Cuban has the most money, though.
And this PR campaign he seems to undertaking makes me all the more suspicious.
"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07
me either
Unless we’re talking Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, it’s tough to imagine one person having enough money to outbid a conglomerate or consortium headed up by the likes of Canning or Ricketts or whoever. But I would think consortiums tend to be less emotional than individuals, so there may be a fiscal limit in place for them. Whereas an individual might be more inclined to spend whatever it takes if that’s what he/she really wants.
In the end, I still don’t see how this ends up anywhere except with Canning’s group, but the dynamics along the way will sure be interesting to watch.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
the problem with a consortium is that
the weakest link of the major backers will limit what you can bid (at some point someone can, and usually does get cold feet). Cuban (even if there is anyone else in his group) will run his bid.
As I see it, Cuban is just a modern day combination of Bill Veeck and George Steinbrenner (creative/marketing talent and ego owner), but the difference is that Cuban has the dough to bid without putting a group together (even Steinbrenner has a group of owners).
I agree that Zell will use Cuban to get the highest bid and Zell will not let MLB force him to take a bid from Levin or Canning if it materially below Cuban’s bid.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
Please no Canning
I want the Cubs to be about the Cubs, not fulfilling Bud Selig’s good citizenship code.
All three of you are making solid points in regards to ownership...
..but one of Al’s points that sums it up best in my opinion is;
I want the Cubs to be about the Cubs and baseball, not about the owner.
And I dont think that would ever be possible with Cuban as the owner
Felix Pie must play everyday!
I’ve gotta disagree with Al on some of this. I dont really think Cuban has time to make the Cubs all about him. He has Dallas to think about an d his businesses. He will turn the Cubs into a very unique team that any player would take a major pay cut to play for (yea I realize most players would do that now) but he took a sh!t team in Dallas and turned them into a powerhouse and a team that any player in the league would want to be on. He treats his players right. He upgrades their lives and Cuban is part of the team. Cuban is the type of guy who would cut Murton loose so he would have the best chance at succeding rather than hang onto him in AAA. He is a players type owner.

another take
you have to consider the fact that the media is coming to Cuban as much as he is going to them. He’s the better “story” and that’s why you see him in front of the camera. That’s just part of today’s media and we all have to live with it. It shouldn’t be a negative to Cuban and it would be odd for him not to speak about his desire to purchase the team.
We can always get an owner like the Mariners
who has never attended a game or talked to the press.
From the Seattle PI:
ET’S GET TO the key point: It’s time for a change at the top of the Mariners organization.
The board of directors needs to replace Howard Lincoln as chairman and CEO and advance Chris Larson, the owner of the second-largest share, to franchise leadership.
Will the move fix this season? Highly improbable. But unlike the postgame clubhouse confusion Wednesday, it will send a clear message that everyone is, finally, accountable.
The change is not offered easily. Baseball fans throughout the Northwest should have everlasting gratitude for the 1992 rescue of major league baseball led by Hiroshi Yamauchi, the retired chief of Nintendo of America. Yamauchi, Lincoln and his Seattle partners were in charge when the miracle 1995 season changed the baseball culture. They led the controversial fight for what turned into a jewel of a ballpark, and helped provide in 2001 a regular season of success unsurpassed in the history of the American League.
Since then, however, next to nothing. This will be the seventh consecutive season the Mariners, playing in baseball’s smallest division, will have whiffed on the playoffs.
After the 2001 season, eight different American League teams have made the playoffs. In the National League, 14 of 16 have been in the postseason. In an era when revenue sharing has made contenders out of nearly every franchise, the Mariners, despite a hefty, growing payroll and tremendous financial support in a five-state monopoly, are going in the other direction.
Fergawdsakes, even Tampa Bay has a better shot this year than the Mariners.
Lincoln, a retired Nintendo executive who owns a small share but represents Yamauchi’s majority interest in the team, has been in charge since 1999. He bears ultimate responsibility for a decline in fortunes that has the Mariners with the worst record in baseball and threatening to have the worst season for a franchise whose history is littered with horrible years.
Obviously, Lincoln is not walking the opponent’s No. 9 hitter, nor letting grounders skip under his glove. But he and president Chuck Armstrong put in charge the baseball people, principally general manager Bill Bavasi, who created a personnel impasse from which there is no getting around this year.
As far as Lincoln’s role, in an October 2006 interview in his office not long after his infamous “hot seat” declaration, he explained his responsibility:
“The entire organization, and especially me, is on the hot seat. I thought long and hard about continuing with Bill and (manager Mike Hargrove, who quit in 2007). I’m putting my neck out on the line because I believe in them. I’ve made it clear to the ownership group that, having made the decision, I’m fully responsible for it.”
I asked what happens to him if the Mariners start off the 2007 season, say, 15-30?
“That’s up to the board,” he said.
The Mariners won 88 games to finish second, preserving all management jobs. But the season had a swoon in which they lost 15 of 17 games that ended contention by Labor Day. With a few different players in 2008, the Mariners continue to swoon, virtually done by Memorial Day despite a $117 million payroll.
Then came the foolishness Wednesday. Before the game, Armstrong, publicly a big backer of the staff and manager John McLaren, was overheard delivering a tirade in the coaches’ clubhouse office, basically berating all for how few players have improved from a year ago.
After the game and series with the No. 1 foe - the Angels completing a three-game sweep despite missing traditional Mariners-killer Vladimir Guerrero - McLaren launched a calculated tirade to the media that had more profanities and clichés than relevant points. Independent of him, Bavasi ordered players to stand at their lockers to face a presumed inquisition from a bewildered media contingent. Reporters so used to players ducking their media obligations couldn’t figure out the changed protocol, guessing that something else was up, perhaps a firing of McLaren.
The bizarre attempt at accountability seemed pointless and may have created a fracture between players and management. Team sources said Bavasi, frustrated by a lack of leadership among players, was advised not to do it by staffers. In a voice mail Thursday to Seattle P-I columnist Jim Moore, Bavasi said: “I just wanted to make sure everybody experiences the same thing at the same time for once. That was really it. It was not meant to be a punishment.
“It was a way to make sure guys just stopped and … wear what you just did, and experience it together, force them to be in the same room together and they might have to actually talk about it.”
Yet the image was one of an angry parent forcing a pouty child to stand in the corner. Perhaps Bavasi thinks that the gesture represents leadership, or maybe that the players will be so furious with him they will finally pull together.
But none of that addresses the fact that the roster is much like the roster of a year ago, largely a diffident bunch of hired guns from disparate lands; middling talents either before or past their primes who have little group identity.
In his fifth season as GM, it is Bavasi’s team, specifically forecast by him and McLaren to contend. For him to call out players publicly without accepting responsibility for their awkward assembly is hypocritical. Yet Armstrong and Lincoln have backed him and his player judgments to the hilt.
Since 1995, the Mariners have churned stadiums, rosters, managers, general managers, scouts and coaches, yet remain one of four teams never to have played in a World Series.
What they haven’t changed is leadership at the top. In 16 years, Yamauchi, 82, has never attended a game or consented to an American interview. He is a complete mystery known only slightly through the filter of Lincoln. Many current and former employees were and often are baffled by some decisions, some of which they think favor Japanese players.
Whenever Armstrong is asked about Japanese players, he says the same thing: “Talk to Howard. Not my job.” For his part, Lincoln has always insisted that there is no favoritism. Whatever the case, somehow accountability seems to drift into the ether.
Bavasi is mostly right in that this season’s travails rest with underperforming players. But he has yet to own up to years of mistakes in player acquisition, which not only leaves the current team a steaming pile, it creates for the geographically handicapped Mariners one more reason not to be attractive to future free-agent players.
In other words, good luck with signing supposed ace pitcher Erik Bedard to a long-term contract after his acquisition cost five good players.
If the seven-person group of owners hasn’t seen enough, what else does it take? Larson, one of the early Microsofties, is an extraordinarily reluctant public figure. But he has an abiding passion for and knowledge of baseball. He was the most active owner in overseeing the construction that helped make the stadium in a Seattle summer perhaps more popular than the team.
What he is not, is a panacea. But new leadership is a step in the right direction for a franchise that has changed everything else, to no avail. The club is on the verge of becoming as locally irrelevant as it is nationally irrelevant—except for its weirdness.
For hours Thursday on CNN.com, an Associated Press story rehashing a P-I online story last week about the Safeco Field usher who scolded a lesbian couple for kissing was, in a presidential election year during wartime, rated No. 1 national story in online interest.
That says more about America than the Mariners. But the club has nothing else to talk about.

Cuban
I seriously hope he buys the Cubs. Not only is he a great owner, he knows how to treat his employees/players. I think he has what it takes to bring the Cubs to a new level. Youth and change might be exactly what the Cubs need in the ownership role. I also think he has a respect for sports that will keep the Cubs…the Cubs.
With that said I don’t know how realistic it is. The owners vote on who they will allow to be owners ( i think) and Riensdorf was the head hancho in trying to keep Cuban out of the NBA. I think the MLB owners are more conservative than the NBA so his chances at even being able to bid are probably slim. Thats too bad.

Also
I dont mind him getting thrown out of games. Sure, I think he goes overboard quite a bit but at least he’s involved. If half the major league team owners had the passion he has…..maybe they do, who knows. I dont see it in other owners besides Daniel Snyder or Jerry Jones or Arthur Blank. I like an owner who is part of the team rather than a ‘CEO’ who is in charge of the bottom line dollar. When Cuban said he’d sit in the bleachers ever game I believed him He;s a fan 1st and owner 2nd as far as I can see. I’m all for it.
Maybe Al is afraid Mark will steal his seat haha
Either way I say get it over with fast and dont make it a distraction to whats been a great season so far.

Bonderman's out for the season, as is Westbrook.
Bonderman was mentioned as a possible trade target for the Cubs, and so he’s off the market now. Losing Westbrook might make the Indians less willing to deal Sabathia, another Cubs trade topic.
And I dropped them both off my crappy fantasy team yesterday thank goodness.
