Food, Glorious Food
In today's New York Times there appeared this culinary guide to all 30 major league ballparks.
Since there are people here who have been to just about all of the ML parks, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions about the NY Times' opinion. FWIW, I happen to agree with their comments about the Italian sausage served at Wrigley Field. They also say that ALL the food at the Cell is bad, and I disagree with that -- the Cell, in general, has pretty decent food.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Missing from Wrigley
Unless Im just blind I cannot find Italian Beef sandwiches sold at Wrigley. You can’t even find that sandwich outside of Illinois it should be at the ball park and something people visiting Chicago should be able to try when watching a game.

They do.
I had an Italian Beef sandwich. Sold in the grandstand near the Clark/Addison entrance. It was spectacular!

I stopped when the writer spoke of someone drinking
champagne at the ballpark. That told me all I needed to know. And excuse me, but “gossamer coating?” Yeesh. Trollope called; he and 19th Century want their prose back. Look, I’m all for fine-dining, but I don’t go to Alinea and order a hot dog; don’t blast ballparks that don’t serve champagne and truffle mayonnaise. These thing are different in kind, not in degree. You can’t hold a ballpark to the same culinary standard as a restaurant.
Rant over.

Well Said
I liked the idea for the piece, but man the biases that were put right up front didn’t leave much confidence this advice would be particularly good for baseball fans.
Hot dogs and peanuts still rule the food court, but I spotted signs of progress almost everywhere on my road trip. There were concessionaires that served humanely raised meat from the fashionable purveyor Niman Ranch. Phillies fans drank beer from biodegradable cups made of corn, and a few might even have filled their cars with biodiesel made from the park’s used fryer oil after the game.
Whatever.

Well,
that’s not exactly what I had in mind. I’m for sustainable, responsible consumption, and, to be honest, I’ve got a pound of Niman Ranch bacon in the fridge, but it was the snide tone he carried (I brought myself to read the whole piece) towards any place that didn’t have the requisite yuppie amenities. That’s what’s most distasteful about this article.

A colleague of mine
just went to Alinea recently and said it was quite an experience. Sounded like Iit would jusyt make me angry. VEry expensive science experiments and tiny portions of food.

It's meant to be as much an experience as a meal, for sure.
And it is quite expensive. Grant Achatz is doing some really cool stuff over there, though.

he had his illness treated here at the hospital where I work too. I think this is what got my colleague thinking. I am just more of a eat very large servings of food till I am in pain kind of guy. Doesn’t sound like Alinea is this type of place.
My colleague brought the menu that they give you after the meal. Very interesting presentation!

The Cell and Wrigley, as you can see here, have the same food service. The only difference is, you have to go hunting sometimes at Wrigley to find some of the “more diverse” offerings. But it’s pretty much the same stuff.

upon the rec of people here, when my wife and I were in SF recently, I had some garlic fries (at Pier 39 though) and they were less than impressive. I am hoping that I just got a bad serving. They were just wedge potatoes with a ton of garlic on them. Nothing so special IMO.

Only partially correct.
Most food at Petco isn’t very good. But the Rubio’s Fish tacos are a SD favorite. Although you can get then for a quarter of the price at Rubio’s all over SD county. The dogs are passable—the reviewer must have had a bad one. The Fish & Chips from Anthony’s aren’t bad and The Randy Jones barbeque is good, but way overpriced.
The major problem at Petco is with the service. SportsService/Delaware North has a great scam going. Fund-raising groups are invited to “work” the stands, and get a cut of the ‘profit’ that stand makes. Free labor! Every Night! Free labor, evey night,. Free labor, ON THEIR FIRST DAY, EVERY DAY! So how did you do on your first day on your new job? A little slow? Not sure what you might be doing? Service is THE SLOWEST IN BASEBALL. And, as word gets around that groups don’t really get much coin from this offering—I notice that more stands are NOT labeled “Served By: (your group here) ” any more. My goodness, they have hired actual employees….
So, I just go to the Chicago Hot Dog joint a few blocks away from Petco before I go to the park. And, yes, Italian Beef Sandwiches are available outside Illinois. (Portillo’s has 2 CA locations, in the O-C and in Riverside County. SD has about 5 Chicago hot dog/beef/sausage joints.
“Dodger Dogs” are among the best I’ve ever had at a ball park, so the reviewer is incorrect.
Never buy a nationally franchised product at a ball park, by the way. No Carl’s Jr, no CPK. Avoid.
I remember food at The Cell (last time I was there was 1994) as being very, very good.
by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jun 8, 2008 6:55 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed re: Dodger Dogs.
I will disagree on your “never buy a nationally franchised product at a ball park”. I had a Subway sandwich at Shea Stadium a couple of years ago—made just the same as it would be at one of their standalone stores.

Re: Italian Beef
When I said they don’t have Italian Beef outside of Illinois—- Chicago branded restaraunts and chains don’t really count. You can’t go to a hot-dog place in NYC or Detroit or LA and expect to order Italian Beef. Actually for that matter you might as well have a hard enough time finding a hot-dog place in most locations too as pizza by the slice has taken over most of the US.

In my baseball
travels, I try to find the best food that the park has to offer, but at the same time, we attempt to find the best signature foods of the cities we’re visiting as well. We don’t go to fancy restaurants or fast food chains, instead – figuring Chicago is known for Italian Beef and Deep Dish Pizza – we try to find the Italian beef and deep dish pizza type food for each town.
At the ballparks, my favorites are the pastrami sandwich at Shea, the brats at Miller, and the pierogies at PNC. Outide, in the city, the garlic roast beef at Mayslack’s in Minneapolis, Primanti Bros. capicola sandwich, and Arthur Bryant’s bbq in KC are the tops. However, the best ballpark food I’ve ever had was the bbq nachos at AutoZone Park in Memphis. I sometimes dream about those nachos.
This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again.

Next time at Shea try this Turkey Sandwich (prob from same place you got pastrami). People always rave about it and when I tried it I was also impressed.

My opinions...
I had the Ice Cream at Jacobs Field (Progressive Field now) and it is top notch. The The Cincinatti opinion was right. The Cheese Coney was delicioso, and the nachos werent too good. At busch, although it is said to avoid, I thought the toasted ravioli was good. The brats in Milwaukee are good too. I thought this was a pretty nice (as well as correct) article. Although, I do agree with Al, the cell does have some good food.

Nationals Stadium
I don’t know why you’d have the Hard Times Cafe chili dog when you could have the one from Ben’s Chili Bowl. that guy wasn’t even trying.
major problem, though, is extraordinarily slow and surly service. the lines usually block the entire pathway around the stadium, and the last game I went to, the stands were out of most everything by the 4th inning. they are in the midst of some growing pains

The grilled “Chicago dogs” are fabulous. The dogs that the guys walking around have, or that they have at the regular concession stands, are convenience store quality.

NorCal stadiums
I am an Illinois native living in Northern California as a result of job choices. The Marine Corps brought me out here and a good job offer (and my wife) keep me out here for now. That being said…I never miss a Cubs game at Pac Bell Park and agree with the article somewhat . The Crab sandwich at Pac Bell is awesome! I thought the Gilroy garlic fries were good tho…and I have had them in Gilroy too at their Garlic festival. Pac Bell is a decent ballpark with it’s intimate feel but can u imagine champagne at a ball game. Too many suits and ties at a Giants game…it’s baseball for crying out loud. I always get disgusted looks while I root loudly for the Cubbies. Good thing tho is that there is almost more Cubs fans than Giants fans when we play there.
I get free tickets to the A’s games thru my work. They do have good BBQ from Kinders which is a franchise located throughout NorCal. I also like their jumbo dogs. This year every Wednesday has been dollar dog day which cant be beat. A hotdog for $1 is what a ball park was meant to be! Oakland could use some more fans to fill up that stadium tho. I work in Fremont where they will be moving and wonder if that changes things.
Anyway…got tickets for the Cubs – Giants series at the end of the month and beginning of July. I cant wait to piss off the Giants fans even tho I wil be sitting with one. I will try to get some pics to post on this site. I have to work during the first two games so I only got tickets for the final two (thank God for a 4 game series). I have awesome tickets for the first game…4 rows back just behind the Cubbies on deck circle. Go Cubbies!!!

but like most ball parks, too expensive. I bring my own food or pick it up on the way. I do make an exception for garlic fries. Love ‘em, but then I am a garlic nut. First thing I did once moving up here was go to that Gilroy garlic festival. Garlic ice cream, mmmm…

Eating at Houston's Minute Maid Park
is like being at a Mexican restaurant. Quesadilla’s and sangria are prominent. I had some nachos there one night…..the cheese was good and the jalepeno’s deliciously hot. Second night….one giant italian sausage that was also pretty good. They didn’t have sauerkraut though (who doesn’t have sauerkraut??) so that knocked my overall rating down to a ‘6’.

Agreed on the Garlic Fries
at Chase Field. I was at Game Two last October and sampled these along with a cold O’Douls. I was pleased that the park offered non-alcoholic beer since I don’t drink the real stuff. The person I was with had chicken fingers and fries….the fries were horrid but the chicken actually very good. Who would’ve thought that???

I was going to see what he suggested for ballparks around the league, but after looking at Chicago
he lost credibility. The food at the Cell is good. The hotdogs at Wrigley, while not amazing, aren’t terrible. There are certainly worse foods there (the fries come to mind).

Garcia's Tacos and Frozen Margaritas!
At the BOB—or whatever it’s called today. That is heaven, though not very baseball-y. I’m out of doing anything with beer other than cooking with it, so I’d be looking at different adult beverages.
That said, my favourite Wrigley food is those darn nachos. They’re greasy and disgusting, but damn fine. Everyone needs the occasional artery-clogging meal.
