asked this in other thread as well

To anyone who has been to Shea: I’m going to New York next week and was thinking about going to see Shea Stadium. I was wondering if it was worth seeing before it is torn down. The pitching matchup is Lincecum vs. Santana so that could be a factor…

Theriot was a late scratch. Len and Bob speculate it is due to his bruised right hand.

I just don’t understand some of you all’s man-crush on Cedeno. Is it that people think he’s good, or just better than Theriot? I think I’ll trust Lou to lead us to the best record we’ve had in like 70 years, and he thinks Theriot is better fit.

RC has a .252 avg in 815 AB’s. RT has a .287 avg in 981 AB’s.

If you go ahead and look over my body of work...

...you’ll find this opinion to be pretty consistant. I use OPS or OBP/SLG in casual conversation, Linear Weights for when I’m doing research. For fielding I use Zone Rating. Add a positional adjustent and it’s called Wins Above Replacement. (I also have my own baserunning stat based on PBP data, if you’re curious.)

Question: Why are you wasting all this brillant player analysis on us? Why don’t you work for a club?

by soonerbered on Jul 1, 2008 10:03 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Because I like the Cubs and find it fun to hang out here.

If you don’t like my conclusions or don’t agree with them, that’s fine. I like to think my work stands for itself as close to professional-grade analysis; I’ve had conversations with people who do consulting work for MLB clubs and they sometimes get to talking above my head – stuff like ANOVA escapes me right now.

So, I do it because it’s fun and it’s a hobby. If you don’t care for what I do, that’s fine. But I really don’t like it when people question my integrity baselessly.

by lostinthevines on Jul 1, 2008 9:42 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, and to be frank I don't know that it matters.

Fielding percentage is a poor way of measuring defense. The best minor league defensive numbers I’m aware of are Dan Fox’s Simple Fielding Runs; he works for the Pirates now, sadly, so no chance of getting 2008 numbers. But I think he was around a -5 in 2007, not great but not terrible.

Well, a 2B usually has more chances in a game

than a 3B. Therefore, I would put my better defensive 2B at 2B.

Fontenot doesn't have the arm for third.

You’d have to set DeRosa up to handle the relay throw anytime a grounder was hit to him over there.

Fontenot is a passable defensive second baseman.

This is probably our best defensive alignment with the current personel. Asking Lou to do otherwise is asking him to put his team in a worse position to win this ballgame.
