To anyone who has been to Shea: I’m going to New York next week and was thinking about going to see Shea Stadium. I was wondering if it was worth seeing before it is torn down. The pitching matchup is Lincecum vs. Santana so that could be a factor…

Question: Why are you wasting all this brillant player analysis on us? Why don’t you work for a club?

by soonerbered on Jul 1, 2008 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Because I like the Cubs and find it fun to hang out here.

If you don’t like my conclusions or don’t agree with them, that’s fine. I like to think my work stands for itself as close to professional-grade analysis; I’ve had conversations with people who do consulting work for MLB clubs and they sometimes get to talking above my head – stuff like ANOVA escapes me right now.

So, I do it because it’s fun and it’s a hobby. If you don’t care for what I do, that’s fine. But I really don’t like it when people question my integrity baselessly.

I like Fontenot better than Patterson...

...but with Theriot and Ramirez both unavailable they’re essentially the same player – a backup second baseman who plays no other infield position.

"I got mad hits like I was Rod Carew!"

by lostinthevines on Jul 1, 2008 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

No, and to be frank I don't know that it matters.

Fielding percentage is a poor way of measuring defense. The best minor league defensive numbers I’m aware of are Dan Fox’s Simple Fielding Runs; he works for the Pirates now, sadly, so no chance of getting 2008 numbers. But I think he was around a -5 in 2007, not great but not terrible.

by cwyers on Jul 1, 2008 9:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, a 2B usually has more chances in a game

than a 3B. Therefore, I would put my better defensive 2B at 2B.

Fontenot is a passable defensive second baseman.

This is probably our best defensive alignment with the current personel. Asking Lou to do otherwise is asking him to put his team in a worse position to win this ballgame.

This is now getting frustrating.

I know this guy is a good pitcher, but my god we cannot do anything against him. Alfonso Soriano WE NEED YOU!

If you compare him to other SS of his generation he doesn't get in.

A-Rod, Jeter, Ripken, Larkin, Nomar all had better numbers.

There's an interesting pro argument

here.

Not sure I agree with it, but I think it has some interesting points.

It's like we have 3 pitchers hitting tonight

with Marquis, Fonte and Cedeno

A good day for me is a cubs win and a sox loss.

Z is a better hitter then Ronny and Mike

Is Fonte

Going to stay on this team all year?

You forgot Ted Lilly.

I think he’s batting eighth.

Cedeno's line so far this season is...

...is .276/.348/.362. That’s not good, but it’s not like he’s Neifi Perez at the plate.

by cwyers on Jul 1, 2008 10:29 PM CDT reply actions

No one is Neifi Perez at the plate

Except, of course, Neifi Perez

He has his own win in the ineptitude HOF

by cocknfire on Jul 1, 2008 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was gonna say...

...IIRC, he was 1 for 4 with a walk last night. Admittedly, though, he has looked pretty bad so far tonight.
