Minor League Wrap--July 9

It's the "EVERYBODY WINS" edition!  And more good news from the Shark!

Thanks again to Unique for filling in through my troubles.  I've got to say, it's been a pretty tough summer.

On my way home, I stopped for lunch at an Applebee's in Sparks, NV.  Right by the bathroom, they had this big shrine to former Cub (and local boy) Shawn Boskie.  Too bad the uniform, hat and pictures were all from his Angels days.

I think I've earned the right here to offer my (yet another) opinion on the Harden trade.  This trade was a great one for both clubs, really, although you have to wonder if Oakland couldn't have held out for a little more.  I knew the Cubs wouldn't offer Josh Vitters for Rich Harden, but I thought for sure that Jose Ceda or Wellington Castillo would go in such a trade.  In fact, when I heard the rumors of Harden to the Cubs, the trade I put together in my head was Gallagher, Murton, Castillo and Kevin Hart.  We did a lot better than that, and got a quality swingman in Chad Gaudin in the process.

As far as the prospects that we gave up, I think most of you know that I've been pretty high on Eric Patterson, even starting a "Free Eric Patterson" campaign.  That campaign has been successful and he has been freed.  In my post-season rankings of prospects last October, I said the Cubs needed to either play Patterson or trade him.  They traded him, and it was the right call as he wasn't going to play in Chicago.  I believe that Patterson will likely have a good career, but his defense and lack of a real position may keep him from being a regular more than a season or two.  Someone called him "85% of Ray Durham" and that might be about right.

Most of you already have an opinion on Matt Murton and Sean Gallagher, so I won't say much.  Gallagher's upside is probably a #3 starter, which is a good thing to be but hardly something that's going to make us gnash our teeth in a few years wondering how he got away.

Josh Donaldson was a guy I really liked last season, but he's been terrible this year.  People speculate that the demands of learning to catch are taking a toll on his bat, and that may be true.  He was hitting better in June, so maybe he's finally getting more comfortable behind the plate.  But his defensive skills have always been questionable and he may not be able to stay behind the plate.  He might hit enough to play an infield corner, but his bat is a lot less valuable there.  Wellington Castillo had passed him as the #1 catching prospect in the organization and Steve Clevenger wasn't far behind.  Donaldson is someone who has a good upside, but isn't showing any signs of fulfilling it right now.

I know, I know.  On to the games already.  We're already sick of Harden, Josh.  But the Harden/Gaudin trade did cause some ripples in the minor leagues, and I'll try to mention as many of the player moves as I can.

One note:  Donnie Veal, Mitch Atkins and Nate Spears were all chosen to play in the Southern League All-Star Game.  Congratulations to those three.

Iowa Cubs

The I-Cubs split a double header with the Round Rock Express, losing the first game 3-2 in eight innings and winning the second, 5-2 behind three Jason Dubois home runs.

In the first game, J. R. Mathes started and allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk in 5.2 innings.  Mathes struck out three.  Hector Carrasco took the loss in relief when he allowed a home run to Express first baseman Mark Saccomanno.

Felix Pie hit his sixth PCL home run in a 1 for 4 night.  It was a solo shot in the sixth inning.

In the nightcap, Jeff Samardzija pitched what was probably his best game of the year; maybe of his career.  Samardzija threw a seven-inning complete game and allowed two runs on two solo home runs.  He allowed seven hits total.  He walked nobody and struck out seven.

If someone can tell me why the Shark continues to pitch better every time he gets promoted, please explain it to me.  At this rate, I'm thinking if he gets promoted to the majors this month, he's going to take the Rookie of the Year award away from Soto.  (No, I'm not being serious.  But Samardzija's career is seriously weird.)

As mentioned earlier, Jason Dubois gave the I-Cubs all the offense they needed, as he went 3 for 3 with three home runs.  Dubois had four RBI total.  Felix Pie went 2 for 4 in the night cap and third baseman Matt Craig celebrated being promoted to AAA by hitting a home run in a 1 for 3 effort.

Shortstop Andres Blanco was 2 for 3.

Tennessee Smokies

The Smokies whacked the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx, 9-3.

Esmailin Caridad picked up the win, allowing two runs in 5.1 innings.  The Diamond Jaxx got six hits off Caridad and two of those left the building.  Caridad struck out six and walked only one.

Greg Reinhard picked up his fourth save with 2.1 innings of perfect relief.  Reinhard struck out two.

Second baseman Nate Spears was 2 for 4 with his second home run of the year, a two-run blast in the third inning.  Spears had three RBI total.  Center fielder Sam Fuld also hit his second home run in a 2 for 3 night that included two walks.  Finally, first baseman Kyle Reynolds hit a solo home run in a 1 for 4 effort. It was Reynolds's seventh homer.

Left fielder Tyler Colvin was 2 for 5 with a triple and three runs scored and right fielder Doug Deeds was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.

Daytona Cubs

Daytona dumped the Dunedin Blue Jays, 6-2.

Starter Marcos Mateo pitched five innings and allowed two runs on four hits and three walks.  Mateo struck out seven.  Todd Blackford picked up the win with three shutout innings of relief.  Blackford allowed two hits and a walk. He didn't strike out a batter.

Center fielder Jim Adducci's grand slam in the seventh inning was the big blow.  It was Adducci's first home run of the season and his only hit in four at-bats.

Right fielder Yusuf Carter was 3 for 4 with his tenth home run, which was a solo shot  in the fifth.  Carter scored twice and had only the one RBI.   Shortstop Darwin Barney was 3 for 3 with a run scored.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs caged the Kane County Cougars, 5-1.

Starter Kevin Kreier got the win with five innings of work, allowing only one run on five hits and two walks.  Kreier struck out four.  Steve Vento got his tenth save of the year with two innings of shutout relief.

First baseman Luis Bautista continues to impress with a 4 for 5 night with a double and a run scored.  Catcher Luis Flores, just promoted from Boise, was 3 for 5 in his Midwest League debut.  Flores had two RBI and scored once.  Center fielder Jonathan Wyatt was 2 for 3 with two walks and three stolen bases.  Wyatt scored once and had an RBI.

DH Rebel Ridling was 1 for 4 with a double in his MWL debut and Jake Opitz, who was also promoted from Boise, went 0 for 3 with two walks.

Boise Hawks

The Hawks topped the Eugene Emeralds, 7-3.

Josh Whitlock started and had some control problems.  While he only allowed one run and one hit in four innings, he walked five Emeralds and only struck out two.  Jeffrey Beliveau threw struck out five in two shutout innings of relief while allowing three hits, but the official scorer gave the win to John Muller, who allowed only one hit in two innings of relief.  Muller did not record a strikeout or a walk.

Josh Vitters hit his second home run of the year in a 2 for 5 night.  Vitters had three RBI and scored twice.  First baseman Ryan Keedy was 2 for 5 with a double and his first professional home run.

Shortstop Ryan Flaherty was 2 for 5 with a run scored and second baseman Josh Harrison was 1 for 2 with three walks.  Harrison scored twice.

AZL Cubs

Beat the AZL Athletics, 8-7.

Chris Carpenter made his professional debut and allowed two runs in one inning of work.

you have any idea how many pitches shark is throwing and what hes topping out at?

In AAA

they do list the pitch counts. He threw 96 pitches tonight. 63 strikes.

I should have added both home runs came in the seventh (and final) inning.

They don’t list velocities in AAA Gameday, though. Sorry about that.

he was consistantly hitting 93

and hit 94 at least once by my count…..i was first row behind red rocks warm up batters circle and i asked a couple of them what he was like to hit against…..they all had a similar reaction…..they would turn around, smirk a little and begrudgingly admit “he’s pretty tough” or something along those lines

You know what really baffles me?

Samardzija, AA, 2008: .64 GB/FB ratio
Samardzija, AAA, 2008: 1.58 GB/FB ratio

So Shark gets promoted, basicallly doubles his strikeouts to walks, AND goes from being an extreme flyball pitcher to an extreme groundball pitcher – you’ve got to be kidding me, right?

by cwyers on Jul 10, 2008 1:26 AM CDT   0 recs

Oh, and just to add to the fun.

His ERA still looks low, compared to his components – home runs are mostly the problem. And yet his BABIP? I estimate, oh, .372. I don’t even know.

by cwyers on Jul 10, 2008 1:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sample size, of course

But Samardzija is just the weirdest prospect ever. I’ve read reports from scouts who just scratch their heads; unsure about what to make out of him.

I gotta say though, if he continues to pitch like this, Hendry and Wilken are going to look like geniuses. Let’s hope they do.

And if he continues to pitch like this...

... you’ll see him in Chicago in September.

Well...

Typically speaking the “real” prospects of most organizations reside at Double A. While Triple A lineups are mostly populated with aging joureyman of the variety of Josh Kroeger, Jason Dubois, etc. So plausible argument can be made that Jeff Samardzija is having a grand time getting classically defined “4 A” hitters out while he had relative more difficult time getting out the legitimate major league prospect types that round out Double A lineup cards. Obviously this is an oversimplification, but I do think the argument has merit.

The most important thing is for the Shark to continue development of his pitching repetoire and to get innings under his belt. I hope he has a bright future.

Take a look at our AAA roster versus our AA roster.

Okay, sure, there are more “real prospects” in AA; AAA is a holding ground for fringe major leaguers and nonprospects.

Here’s the thing, though – there aren’t top-shelf prospects at every position on any AA team, with the possible exception of the Huntsville Stars. And so there’s quite a bit of roster filler at AA, too. The difference is that the roster filler at AAA is older – which makes them a legit power threat more often than in AA – and simply better.

It is, quite simply, harder to pitch in AAA than AA.

by cwyers on Jul 10, 2008 11:19 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Of course it is

The reason why there are more prospects in AA is because they’re younger and have more promise, not because they’re better at this point in time. Any PCL franchise would win the Southern League in a cakewalk. It’s simply not true that Samardzija is feasting on “non prospects.”

And yes, Matt Craig was sitting in AA most of this season, so AA has a lot of roster filler too.

Have you heard

anything about Aaron Shafer and Chris Carpenter? They sound like some interesting prospects.

Good to see Carpenter pitch.

I am on the bandwagon for him.

Dubois

is a bum, but I think he deserves a chance to play for us. This is insane what he is doing in AAA. I know evertime he plays in the majors he is horrible, but you never know.

by CubFaninStLouis on Jul 10, 2008 8:22 AM CDT   0 recs

I agree

I stated this yesterday in the who should be brought up fan post and not many liked it but, the guy is just mashing and we need another righty bat on the bench but, with Soriano coming back it looks after the ASB it looks like they will wait to make a move and just replace one of the 13 pitchers with Soriano.

by oeosoto on Jul 10, 2008 8:34 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Dubois

He must have thought the same thing I did. The Cubs have an opening for a RH bat so he put on a good show.

13 pitchers is stupid to me. The Cubs have an opening on the 40 man roster. Either Dubois or Torres should be brought up and Marshall should be sent down until Marquis is traded. The Cubs sent Marshall down earlier in the year to stretch out and now he might not pitch again until after the All-Star break. Send him to Iowa and let him start a game.

My new pet peeve is the 25 man roster. With more and more managers wanting extra pitchers, it is time to increase the roster to 26. I think it was the Yankees last weekend who due to some minor bumps and bruises had one extra player on their bench to start the game…their backup catcher. If managers want 12 and 13 pitchers (I have no idea why) then rosters need to be 26.

by rlpete on Jul 10, 2008 9:05 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

+1

As long as Marquis remains in the starting rotation, I’d like to see Marshall remain stretched out as a starter as well. To be honest, I’d prefer to see Marshall in the major league starting rotation, but it is what it is. Sean is a back-of-the-rotation insurance policy that most teams only dream of.

Regarding Dubois, I can’t believe I’m about to say this but, yeah, what the hell. Bring him up for another cup o’ coffee and see what happens. His power numbers right now are RIDICULOUS. If even a little of that could carry over to the bigs, and he could knock in a few insurance runs (as a pinch hitter, preferably), all the better for us all.

No !!!

Do you remember his forays in left field for the Cubs? He makes Daryl Ward look like a gold glove outfielder. Dubois has ZERO business playing the field.

Cerda as Catcher

I noticed that Matt Cerda, who was drafted as a shortstop, has been catching the last couple of days. It looks like the A’s were running a ton against him – 4 SB’s, but he also had 2 CS’s and 1 PO throw.

Josh, have you heard any rumblings on whether this is an experiment or a long-term shift and whether Cerda projects well defensively as a catcher? It seems like an odd move to shift a shortstop to catcher, though not unprecedented with Clevenger’s shift last season.

by Hawkeye Hellraiser on Jul 10, 2008 8:45 AM CDT   0 recs

Cerda was immediately shifted to catcher.

Apparently he grew up playing the position as he was on a little league world series team as a catcher and only switched recently (in HS) to infield to help his team. Probably the same old story that you want your best player at SS irregardless of if it is actually his best position. Supposedly he had an excellent pre-draft workout for the Cubs and was all for switching when they discussed it then.
He has been playing well thus far. He is hitting over 350 with a 480 OBP so he is off to a good start. Let’s hope it continues.

by CA Cub Fan on Jul 10, 2008 10:10 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm excited about this.

If only because, if he ever catches Jose Ceda, we’ll have a Ceda-Cerda battery.

The goat noises being played over the PA system after each Cub out were a nice touch also. Strangely, no livestock cold be heard after Ward hit his HR.
