Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Reds, Thursday 7/10, 1:20 CT

Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs, Jul 10, 2008 1:20 PM CDT

Next Game

Cincinnati Reds
@ Chicago Cubs

Thursday, Jul 10, 2008, 1:20 PM CDT
Wrigley Field

Bronson Arroyo vs Ted Lilly

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to center field at 10-20 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 80.

Complete Coverage >

With the quick turnaround to a day game today, this thread will be fairly short and to the point. There'll be quite a bit of scoreboard-watching this afternoon as both the Cardinals (Braden Looper vs. the Phillies' Jamie Moyer) and Brewers (Dave Bush vs. the Rockies' Jorge de la Rosa) have day games, too.

Meanwhile, here are some more photos from last night's win:

Safe!
Geovany Soto scores on Jeff Keppinger's error in the 2nd inning

Carlos Zambrano singles in the 8th inning

2008 - Bronson Arroyo 6-7 19 19 0 0 0 0 99.0 125 71 64 18 38 91 5.82 1.65

After starting off this season in horrific fashion, Ted Lilly is 9-2, 3.54 in his last 16 starts -- very similar to the numbers he put up last season. His one start against the Reds this year was this bad one on April 17, but as noted, Lilly has become YLLIL (turned it around) since then. His only career win vs. the Reds came on April 4, 2007 at Cincinnati.

Bronson Arroyo is most famous in Cub lore for hitting two home runs off Glendon Rusch in 2006, when he was 4-0, 1.01 in five starts against a horrid Cubs team. Last year, Arroyo became OYORRA in a bad way for the Reds, and particularly vs. the Cubs, who pounded him all year (0-3, 5.28 vs. the 2007 Cubs). He has not faced the 2008 version of the Cubs yet.

Let's be realistic. It's going to be warm and somewhat humid today with the wind blowing out. Lilly and Arroyo rank 5th and 6th in the NL in HR allowed. Watch for long balls on both sides this afternoon.

Today's game is on cable in Ohio (so EI viewers will see the Reds feed), on WGN nationally, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Hoot passed before Nussle ran for governor.

I think they changed the name of Hoots to the Hawk stop. It was across the street from Beaver’s and just down the street from the Theater. Nussle is a great guy, you might have met my father. He’s a retired dentist, and without giving up my identity, his last name is a decidedly non-masculine color. I was in Mike McMahon’s class at WD.

since it is slow...

in case you missed it, Harden’s press conference:

http://wgntv.trb.com/sports/

He seems really down to earth, and excited (if surprised) to be here. I think we got a high character, high talent pitcher plus another good arm w/gaudin (that’s what makes this trade for me). There may be high risk, but when he’s on he is arguably a top 5 or 10 pitcher in baseball.

In as much that Rich Harden is excited to be on playoff contender

I wonder how Gallagher & Murton feel about leaving one and joining a club that is mediocre at best. Sure, there are more opportunities for those guys to play, but who wouldn’t be depressed to leave a Cubs team that could play in the World Series for the first time in 63 years? I know I would be.

by JFCubFan on Jul 10, 2008 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

well

Murton wasn’t going to get to play on the team anyway. At Oakland, isn’t he already going into the lineup?

These are the saddest of possible words: "Tinker to Evers to Chance"

by slcathena on Jul 10, 2008 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

haha sure

when i was a kid, i LOVED the blue jays. My best friend was a braves fan, and when they played the jays in the series i decided to go against him lol. the next time around, they played the phillies. Lenny Dykstra was REPULSIVE, John Kruk (though I think he does ok on ESPN) still makes me cringe, Darren Daulton, pete incavalia, mickey morandini – they all had long greasy hair and chewed tabacco like it was candy. Ever since that ‘93 series, I have thought of the phillies as a disgusting, repulsive, pathetic organization of baseball (first impressions DO count haha). As for how I became a cubs fan…when I was 11 or 12 living in Ames, IA I couldn’t fall asleep one night. So I surfed the radio waves, and found Pat and Ron on KRNT Des Moines – the cubs were on a west coast swing against the padres w/sammy sosa as their headline guy, and it was 1998. I hopelessly fell in love and follow them almost religiously now.

Anyways, that was probably a long answer – there ya go! and let’s win this game!

We used to call him the most entertaining pitcher in show business, capable of beating up a teammate, shattering a bat over his knee or shouting down an opposing batter every time his anger chip acted up. But awash in $91.5-million wealth and grasping his leadership role, Zambrano is growing up at long last. He no longer heaves his fastball, splitter and slider like he’s trying to murder the catcher

Not sure I understand playing him so much. Day game after a night game. Hot humid day. And he will participate in the All Star game. C’mon Lou. Give Soto a blow today and on Sunday.

Yep

I worry about Geovany Soto holding up during the dog days of summer in late July and August. It’s misguided to be playing him this hard. Especially when a capable back up catcher is on the roster in Henry Blanco. A catcher who by the way also works very well with the Cubbie pitching staff.

He’s more thick than muscular. His legs are the size of kegs—I don’t think one day game after a night game will have a profound effect on his performance.

On another note, I hate when people speculate him of HGH or steroids. He’s NOT a muscular guy; just look at how his uniform droops off his body. That’s just a big dude.

O2 used up,
CO2 produced, H2 produced
Lactic acid produced
Temperature increases, as long as heart rate and breathing rate

Ta-da: blood pH lowered.

Lead off Man show!!!!

by UTCUBS on Jul 10, 2008 1:00 PM CDT reply actions

I can't wait...

It’s a home day game… my FAVORITE game since moving to England since I can watch the game at 7:20pm here instead of midnight or 3am! Sure it’s not on AFN, but at least I have MLB.tv… meaning I also should get Len and Bob for the first time in weeks!

I can’t wait to hear those wonderful words “Chicago Cubs Baseball is on the Air!”

There is no place like Nebraska - Go Huskers!

and I get the lead-off man show!

SWEET!!

We are LIVE from Wrigley Field….

I wanted to say this the other day too

Everybody is worried about Harden getting hurt, but we need to realize that Gaudin is still probably a better starter then gallagher, so its a great back up plan

+200000000000000

but I was speaking in the trade sense, but it would be great to have him replace marquis

by SouthsideCUBSfan on Jul 10, 2008 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Seriously.

The Cubs have four starting pitchers better than Marquis who are either in the bullpen or at AAA right now. Why is he still in the rotation?

by cwyers on Jul 10, 2008 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

because the management see his 5 consecutive wins or whatever it was

and assumes thats good enough to keep him on the roster…. oh and the cubs are paying WAY to much for him to be on the team, we need to trade him for some prospects, or an AVERAGE bullpen guy

no one gonna take that contract of his

and i don’t think hes THAT bad. (maddening sure, but his stuff isn’t awful)

by halfblindcubbiegirl on Jul 10, 2008 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

we'll have to pay half of it

and it will be worth it.

How bad do you have to be...

...before one of the four obviously better players than you gets your job?

Ask Ryan Theriot.

The Cubs don't have four shortstops better than Theriot.

Although it’s not like Lou called up Clint Hurdle and asked him to name Marquis to the All-Star team, either.

by cwyers on Jul 10, 2008 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

no, but they have at least one.

i dunno

but i’d like to see marshall stay in the rotation. but, i’m not lou. who knows what he’s thinking…

he's thinking

gawd I KNOW!!!

I was envisioning this earlier:

Z
Harden
Demp
Lilly
Gaudin

DFA: Marquis (I dont wanna hear all the arguments against this move…I get it, I don’t care, I HATE Jason Marquis for many reasons – especially cuz he sucks)
TRADE BAIT/BACKUP: Kevin Hart, Marquis (since you have 10 days), Rich Hill (rather he stayed) Sean Marshall (rather he stayed)

the point is, Gaudin would be a HUGE upgrade at the 5 spot so even if Harden gets hurt we have made our team better AND we still have pieces that are pretty damn good to make another trade (for what, idk – SS or a big bat for the bench?). Just please, rid of us JM!

Gaudin’s nickname is “Wolverine” in reference to the Marvel Comics superhero. We now return to your usual pregame coverage.

Apparently, he and Jason Kendall...

...were discussing their favorite super heroes back in ‘06, and Gaudin named Wolverine off the top hof his head. Gaudin now puts a Wolverine doll (or action figure) in his locker everyday, and Corey Provus asked him about it.
