Croweaters Anonymous

Hi, I'm DGU and I'm wrong from time to time about baseball.

Star-divide

I think we need a healthy forum where we can post the things we were joyously wrong about this season (or are at least looking wrong about).  Just this week there are some funny posts in retrospect about what it would take to get Harden that might barbecue well for smoked crow.  Farther back some Edmonds posts are fit for crow pasta, cooked al dente (you know, al dente, "not quite done").  And surely we haven't forgotten some Dempster crow, processed, chilled, and put into the ice cream maker Iron Chef style.

I'll start with my own crow dish.  I was wrong about Mike Fontenot.  In April I argued that Fontenot was never going to hit ML pitching again and said, "We have a guy in Mike Fontenot, who Jason Marquis should hit for."  I claimed more than once that he was worthless for our roster.  There may still be players with more utility than him for our roster, but he's hitting awfully well for a bench player.  This crow's been a slow cooker, stuffed with sneaky power, fastidiously basted by Lou getting Fonty into the lineup regularly.  All in all, it's tasting good right now.

Anyone else ready to share their personal crow recipes?  Allez cuisine!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I wasn't too vocal about it here

But I was 120% against Edmonds.
I’ve never liked him and I think he comes across as a pompous ass. I was sure he was finished and I actually hoped that he was, just because I dislike him so much.

My opinion of him hasn’t changed, but I’m glad he’s contributing to the Cubs team.

I was wrong

and I’m glad I was about Edmonds. He looked done, cooked, spent… but seems to show more of the Edmonds I hated to see come to the plate in red. Yes, streaky like he always was – but a solid player in a CF that needed one.

I have no response to that.

by stelmodad on Jul 11, 2008 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not ready

to admit I was wrong about Edmonds yet—he’s hitting .154 in July so far. But if he can turn in one more month like he had in June, then I’ll eat crow.

Despite all my rantings about Fontenot, I think I’m in good shape. I just said (repeatedly) there’s no reason he should be in the major leagues while Eric Patterson sits in the minors. Since Patterson no longer sits in the minors (Well, he does, but for the Sacramento River Cats), I think I’m safe. There isn’t anyone in the minors right now who can take Fontenot’s place. Maybe Nate Spears, but he wouldn’t be any better than Mike is.

If someone finds me saying something worse than that about Fonty, then I’ll dine now. Otherwise, I’m waiting until August 1st to dine on crow for Edmonds.

Borowy . . .Sutcliffe . . .Harden?

by Josh Timmers on Jul 11, 2008 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough.

I ate my crow for saying Fonty was done hitting anything in the majors. I’d still argue that he can be improved on in terms of bench utility.

As for Edmonds, I agree that a lot of caution is needed here. He can still hit in general. But he is no less very liable to injury and having those injuries bring his performance level down. This brings us back to bench utility. The Cubs could use a speedy left-handed OF who can spell all three spots because Reed Johnson should not be hitting against RHPs. Preferrably, this OF would be a defensive improvement on both Edmonds and Soriano.

by DGU on Jul 11, 2008 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

+1 on that

I got tired of Edmonds running and flopping and striking out and hot-dogging with St. Louis. I was happy that he was nearly finished. Now I’m happy he had a great June for us. – TL

Great idea for a thread and here's mine; I was wrong about Kerry Wood

I had no faith in him as a closer and I was very critical of his performances early on (I also didn’t stop to think that it would take him some time to adjust to the closer role). Anyway, although he’s had some bad outings, I’m overall very satisfied with the job he’s done and, as he’s helped the Cubs to a great record so far, the crow I’m eating tastes great!!

But he makes good soup, so I don’t care now.

I’m still reserving judgment on Harden till he actually does some good for us.

Nobody's wrong about Edmonds...

Small sample size. He was good for a couple of weeks and now he’s been complete crap for the past 14 days, which more likely indicates how he’ll play from here on out given his stats since 2006.
His defense is complete shite as well.

As for Marquis I don’t know what the jury’s waiting for.

...

by Chitown Mojo on Jul 11, 2008 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Small sample size?

Don’t bring that in here. Complete crap for 14 days. Now that’s a small sample size. It is no indication at all how a veteran proven ML hitter named ED will perform from here on out. His defense is far from shit as well… You need to understand that he has been playing banged up for about 3 weeks now, BECAUSE the team needed him to. You are wrong. Besides, who are we going to put in CF anyway?

Jimmyeatworld

by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 11, 2008 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't bring the small sample size in here?

I’m just pointing out facts, is all.
His defense is far from shit? He is last in the majors in Fielding % for qualified CFs, 19th out of 21 in Zone Rating.
And this is just using the stats that you might be able to understand.
As for his batting, he’s been in steady decline for the past four years. He’s been playing for three years straight pretty much the same way he’s been playing the last 14 days.
So yeah small sample size but let’s see; he’s had a shitty March/April, a shitty May, a good June, a shitty July. Odd man oout? Let’s not forget that this was all preceded by two bad years.
If you try and think a little, his past 14 days seem more like a return to form than anything else.

“It is no indication at all how a veteran proven ML hitter named ED will perform from here on out.”

That’s classic. Thank you.

Anybody can cite stats...

to bolster a point they are making. I don’t rely on stats. However, when it comes to stats- using your eyes, and looking at the instances in certain games doesn’t tell the whole story. Oh, and thank you for dumbing it down, so my little mind could understand. You need to use your eyes, and you need to understand why he is playing despite his scuffling at the plate as of late. I haven’t seen too many balls that he hasn’t gotten to in the outfield. He has been steady, and sometimes great for the Cubs since they acquired him. You have to look at the reasons why he had two sub-par seasons, and is currently scuffling. Jim Edmonds is a proven ML hitter. Try doing a little research into WHY he declined in the past few years. Try to understand that he has been suffering post-concussion symptoms for over 2 years now. He just came off the medication. My point, stats, (even ones I understand), don’t tell the whole story. Check back when you see what he does in the 2nd half.

Sure.

When he stops beating me over the head with stats. and offers no solution(s). Baseball is not all about stats. Anyone can twist stats. to suit their needs. Let’s use our eyes as well. Let’s try to understand there are reasons behind the numbers. Let’s remember the games ED has certainly put in the win column that have kept the Cubs in first. With all that being said, if I’m wrong, like always- I’ll be the first to admit it.

Jimmyeatworld

by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 11, 2008 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Man I am not beating you over the head with stats...

Jim Edmonds is 38 years old and has been in decline for at least two years, it does not matter what you look at.
Being a proven ML hitter does not mean anything, Hank Aaron is a proven ML hitter and I’m sure we can both agree that he’d be worth capute with a bat in his hands.

I am more than happy when he wins games for us and I wish he’d go on a tear and become Edmonds circa 2000 all over again.
This could happen because of course anything can happen. Nonetheless, everything seems to point otherwise, looking at all the evidence we have, the logical conclusion is that the Edmonds we have seen in the past 14 days is more or less the Edmonds we will see the rest of the way.

If he were to tear it up all year he’d be the exception that confirms the rule. Since he has done nothing but have one good month, there is no reason for us to think that he is that exception.

That makes sense, right?

let's see

how Edmonds does after the ASG. I think he’s hurt, and he’s being put out there because there’s no one else to go out.

Way too many assumptions there...

I just stated the evident: Jim Edmonds is in decline.

I’m not making this up, you can just look it up. Unfortunately unless you want to sit through countless hours of video you’ll have to look at some stats.
Good news for you though is that they do tell a lot. They’ll tell you how often that player gets on base, for how much power he hits and so forth.
Basically they’ll tell you how well he bats which can be seen as a pretty good indicator for, well, how well he bats.

That’s it, all I did was point out a fact and that would make you believe that I “Fancy myself a GM”....

I would like to publicly

eat some crow for a couple calls I made before the season:

1. Kerry Wood would make a shitty closer b/c he walks way too many.

2. Ryan Theriot, while SCRAPPY, is not more than a utility guy, who should only get occasional starts.

Ronny Cedeno, however, I knew would suck, and therefore, am not apologizing for it. He should apologize to us, actually.

Oh - I was wrong, too

about Harden. Never included him on the post: The Hendry Files: Shopping for a Pitcher”

Just never thought it would happen. But, Hendry pulled it off…

One thing is pretty clear, though – Ted Lilly will be slotted in his proper #4 rotation position moving forward, I’d think.

by The E-Man on Jul 10, 2008 5:48 PM CDT reply actions

I was wrong

I thought that Cedeno would be much improved this year. After hearing he played a good CF in Venezuela this winter I expected Cedeno to be getting regular playing time between the outfield, SS, and 2B and challenging DeRosa for most valuable utility guy. I was so wrong it’s not even funny. Cedeno had that one good week early which made me feel kind of smart but since then he is total garbage. Can we give him away.

I wasn’t sure last fall he could translate his PCL MVP success to the big club. He did, and so much more; supplanting Kendall as the starting catcher into the playoffs. All he has done now, is have a ROY 1st half with almost as many homers in the first half as Piazza’a record 18, handle the pitching staff with aplomb, and get better and better behind the dish. I was so wrong. This Han Soto crow actually tastes good… Yum!

Theiot is good for what we ask him to do.

What we ask him to do is likely the most we can ask of him. I gotta give it to him though, he tries so hard. I wish the best for him. If we could somehow get Fonzi out of the lead off spot, Theriot takes enough pitches, and hits singles, can bunt. Would be nice in the lead off slot. However, this does not make up for his weak arm, or lack of range on defense. With that said, I don’t think he’s going anywhere, so I’ll cross my fingers, and hit my knees every night praying he’ll improve, and that Harden will stay healthy.

Was wrong about Rich Hill

I really expected…maybe hoped…he’d have a great year for the Cubs. Perhaps the baseball gods can touch that brain of his and provide one more great story for the second half of the season?

by Cajuncub on Jul 11, 2008 8:55 AM CDT reply actions

At the beginning of the year....

...I told friends that I’d rather have Lieber and Marshall in the rotation than Dempster and Marquis. I thought Dempster would be as inconsistent this year as he was as a reliever.

Ok, I was half wrong on that one. (Still rather have Marshall than Marquis)

Fontenot is proving me wrong lately. I hope he keeps it up.

I was wrong about Sean Gallagher

he turned out to be a nice starter. Unfortunately, he is with the bad guys now…:)

The 100th time has GOT to be a charm...

he plays for the Sox?

I was totally wrong

About Mark DeRosa. I called him “Todd Walker Light”
I was right about Todd Walker (and about Grudz being better and more valuable)
I really enjoy watching DeRosa hit and field.

I was wrong about Derrick May

He sucked.

I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

Definitely wrong about the DeRosa acquisition. I thought it was a total waste of money.

Also, I didn’t think I’d like key lime pie.

by HereComesASpecialBoy on Jul 11, 2008 9:42 AM CDT reply actions

I was wrong about DeRosa, also

However, I’ve always liked key lime pie. Never did I envision myself as a scotch drinker—was wrong about that.

by Shanghai Badger on Jul 11, 2008 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I always liked the DeRosa signing

but I expected him to be a supersub from the bench while platooning with Eric Patterson this year. Missed the mark a bit on that one.

I forgot

about the crow that needs to be eaten for my thinking that Felix Pie was going to play centerfield daily and challenge Soto for ROTY. MMM crow tastes so good.

by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 11, 2008 9:50 AM CDT reply actions

GEO

When Soto struck out EIGHT times in a row in Washington in April, I was SURE that the other teams had a book on him and he was going to become this year’s Koye Hill.

Thankfully, Geo continues to make the necessary adjustments and he is truly deserving of his all-star selection. M-m-m—m, this crow is delicious.

Demp

Thought he would be OK. I was thinking 10 wins would be nice from him over the entire season and he’s already there halfway in.

by cubs on Jul 11, 2008 10:12 AM CDT reply actions

Great subject

First off, great subject to discuss. I think we’ve all been wrong about one thing or another in relation to this team and this season.

I’ll eat some crow and say that Rothschild isn’t the worst pitching coach in baseball anymore. He still scares me, but so far this year things are going fairly well with the pitching staff (except Marquis). Another plus is that we havn’t been hearing about the towel drill at all lately.

I was very leary of Wood closing, but so far, so good.

I would eat crow for Jim Hendry, but we’ll see how the Harden trade works out first. I didn’t think we could get him, but Jim was able to get him for a few spare parts laying around the garage.

Dempster

While I thought he’d do better than most expected this has totally flummoxed me in a happy way.

I was President of the No Jim Edmonds club even making a joke saying they signed him because they had had 2 angels trying to win now they needed Satan.

Also

How about we talk about times we went out on a limb and people called us crazy and we turned out right?

In 2003 I said I thought Zambrano in the long term would be better than Prior and Wood. Of course I might have been wrong if the others had stayed healthy and starters.

I was behind Dempster all the way.

And I was right that DeRosa would be a big part of this team.

I'm probably

the only Cubs fan that was impressed with Wuertz at the beginning of this season. He seemed to start out well and looked like a better long man than Lieber. Lately he has looked not so good, I’ve realized he only has about 1.5 pitches to work with and he’s on his way back to Iowa.

by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 11, 2008 12:27 PM CDT reply actions

It's not eating the crow that bothers me

as much as the pigs that have been flying out of my butt since I finally accepted Jim Edmonds as a Cub. I never had a problem with his being an ex-Card and always respected his considerable skills, I just plain didn’t like him because of all his whining and complaining about called strikes and his occasional penchant for trying to make routine catches look spectacular. However, to his credit, his attitude has been great since he’s been on the Cubs and he’s undeniably helped the team. And I guess the good thing about all the pigs is that we haven’t had to buy any bacon or sausage for a few weeks now…

I'm eating no crow...

for the 2001 draft. As a HS senior from Minneapolis and Cubs fan, I was praying the Twins would take Prior, so I could see the Cubs take Mauer. Although I was forced into early retirement from HS baseball by being very ONEDEC HS edition, I was fortunate enough to graduate the same year as Mauer and to get to see him murder us when he was at Cretin Durham HS here.

Now I was right on Mauer (besides power), but then we would never have Geo, who I think I like a little better.

BWT, looking over the draft, I had no idea Fonty was taken with the 19th overall pick in that very draft.

Except I will eat...

the crow for thinking Burnitz was a good signing…ack.

by jbertram on Jul 11, 2008 1:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Had the Twins taken Prior...

... the Cubs would almost certainly have taken Mark Teixeira, not Joe Mauer.

I thought Jacque Jones was a good pick up.

I was wrong to hate the Choi-for-Lee trade

Didn’t think we should swap a lefty bat for another righty. Plus DLee had a terrible NLCS against us.
