Let's talk about the roster for the 2nd half

It's time to realistically discuss what the roster might look like in the second half.  Do you anticipate changes?  If so, what do you think they might be?  Let's be realistic here though.  Just signed players, like Cashner, will not be on the big team this year.  One of the many "starting" pitchers will have to go.  The bullpen could use a slight face lift.  Should the Cubs make any changes in the infield, and if so, do you think they will?  So, let us talk, (write), it up...

I hope liked Dome in 5th/6th though. You really think they get rid of Marquis and put in Marshall. I hope so I think the kid deserves a shot.

Maybe I should make this a weekly thing.

Get the non stats. point of view, try to look at reasons, trends, etc. Except no one seems to want to play with me today. I’m getting beat up by a stats. guy over at the Croweaters post over ED and his scuffling for the last 14 days. I can’t stand fantasy players who use stats. as the sole lens to view a player, (esp. a veteran).

FWIW

Sori comes back. With Wuertz gone, there’s no pressure for Marquis to go. So.

Lineup:

Sori
Dome/Reed
Lee
Aram
Soto
Edmonds/Dome
DeRosa
Theriot
Pitcher

Rotation:
Z-SMASH
New Canuck
Old Canuck
Uncle Ted & His Amazing HR Machine
The Marquis de Whiny/I am Marshall

Pen
Woody
Marmol
Hart
Howry
Lieber
Eyre (when he returns)
And whoever it is I’m forgetting.

Nickname works perfect for Blanco, if you didn’t know earlier I think we have found your true calling in creating nicknames. By the way I’m assuming White Castle is Wuertz?

white castle

would be marmol i am assuming.

Wuertz

isn’t with the team—he’s in AAA.

If I had to give him a nickname, it might be

“He’s not that much Worse Wuertz” :P

What a fantastic problem we have.

We have TOO MUCH staring pitching, unless I am forgetting someone, I see a possibility of nine starters we can throw out there and have a pretty good shot of winning:

Z
Harden
Dempster
Lilly
Marquis
Marshall
Hart
Lieber
Gaudin

Los Cachorros!

Roster not done for the final stretch drive (outside 40 man call ups in September)

Marquis did well today. My guess is that the Cubs will wish for him to go deep into the 7th next time out (July 22nd) against AZ in Phoenix and then Sunday against FLA (on July 27th) where they could then hopefully make a play on trading him.

The one to watch is not Marshall, it is Hill and his reported regrouping of his delivery and gaining his command. Hill is a far better pitcher than Marquis and would offer what Piniella wants——two lefties on the mound.

That said I am saying the Roster is as follows on August 1st: (Marquis and Wuertz are traded)

Z, Demp, Harden, Lilly & Hill (rotation)
Wood, Marmol, Howry, Eyre, Cotts, Caudin, Marshall (bullpen)

Soto(Blanco), Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Ramirez--starting IF
Soriano, Edmonds(Johnson), Fukudome—starting OF

3 reserves: Ward, Fontenot, Cedeno

Only question is whether Cedeno gets included in a trade that brings prospects and a top raking SS

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

by Ivy Walls on Jul 11, 2008 5:17 PM CDT reply actions

Yep. Roster definitely not done.

That’s why I started this post. I’m gonna do it weekly for a couple of weeks. We all need a place to get together and trade ideas. That being said, I think Marquis & Wuertz will likely be gone as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them stay with Cedeno, just so they have speed on the bench. I think Marquis will be gone quicker than you do, what with his performance today. Get something while it’s still hot.
