Updated: Boy hit by foul ball Thurs in serious condition
Most of us watching Thursday's games remember the rocketing foul ball by Ted Lilly into the stands. L&B said that it'd hit a fan and the Trib has an update on the little boy it hit:
Dominic was in serious condition and still unconscious Friday in Children's Memorial Hospital, where he is recovering from a fractured skull and swelling around his brain. His doctors and family expect him to live, and are thinking now about how his neurological functioning will fare when he comes around.
Please keep him and his family in your thoughts/prayers. Get well soon!
Updated 7/12/08: Ted Lilly visited the family today:
The boy was in serious condition at Children's Memorial Hospital, recovering from a fractured skull and swelling around his brain. Lilly talked to the father on Friday and planned to visit after Saturday's game, bringing a baseball signed by the Cubs players, a bat signed by Mark DeRosa, and a Ryan Theriot glove and jersey, among other items.
Very sad, but its nice to see the Cubs being so supportive of the family. I'll keep my ears to the ground and try to keep the community updated on this little boy.
Please if you're at a game: keep your eyes on the field and take care of those around you!

And, people, please, if you sit where foul balls are usually hit at, please, always pay attention to the game. If you have little kids, be especially careful and/or sit further away from the field.
Anyway, this accident wasn’t anyone’s fault. We all hope the kid recovers and will pray for him.

be especially vigilant...
during batting practice, when balls are flying all over and many fans aren’t paying attention.
This still gives my wife and I chills—we were in the LF bleachers for the Sat. Sox game with our 7 and 8 year old boys. We usually sit out there (back bleachers near the foul pole), so we know how balls fly out. So someone has to watch for balls while the kids are there.
For some reason the Sox decided to take BP in the drizzle, and a few of them were hitting it out. I had ballwatch duty, but had to step into the aisle to let some of the beer garden crowd go in and out.
All of a sudden—the scream of “Ball!” “Ball!” as Dye hit one our way. I couldn’t get to my glove or the boys, neither of whom was facing the field. The ball whizzed between them head-high, then bounced off the row behind us, landing in the next section over.
Neither one of them realized they were a foot away from…well, perish the thought.
Be careful out there, and get well soon Dominic!

From the account I read
it sounds like they were watching, but there was just no time to react. It’s amazing there aren’t more incidents like this.

Prayers for him and his family

God Bless young Dominic....get well soon, son
Does anyone know if there has been anyway to help him and his family? I just read the story and it was very short. Y’all have radio – TV from the area, let me know if something has been set up to help. Thanks…

This is the first story I've seen about him
but I’ve been thinking about it ever since I saw Lilly’s expression during the game… it was the first time he’d ever shown any emotion in his face. I figured since I was, someone else might be too so I posted it.
I’d imagine you could make a donation to the Children’s hospital or something.

I got hit in the stomach by a BP home run in LF at a 1999 game against the Pirates.
Nothing as bad as what Dominic is going through, though. God watch over him, and hopefully he’ll pull through.

My thoughts are with Dominic and his family...
... and I agree with the comments above, no matter where you are in the ballpark, you need to watch the action because a ball can come at you at any time.

So, so sad.
I missed the start of Thursday’s game, in fact, Lilly was out when I started listening. Totally didn’t even know this happened.
Lots of prayers.

Prayers are with him and his family
I was at the game Thursday sitting a few rows in front of them. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a ball come into the stands that fast, at least in person. I did not see it hit Dominic but did see his father rush him down the stairs as soon as it happened rather then waiting for the security/crowd management to get to him. Probably a good idea by his father.
Awhile later a gentlemen with his group came back to gather their things and also asking for the ball. But no one seemed to know where it was. And about 5 minutes later a man stood up and gave it to him, but acting like he didn’t know he had it. Pretty tasteless act in my mind but at least he made the right move and handed the ball over.

Bummer
First I’d heard of it – I’ve been on an intense weeklong shoot and only really got back to my blogging last evening.
I’m not much of a “prayer” guy, really, though I am concerned and taking this chance to express that.
And yes, be careful out there.

get better please!!!
hopefully this kid makes a miraculous recovery and the cubs let him throw out the 1st pitch for one of our late october games. if you see us pleading up there harey—help this youngster out.

eeesh...
Some foul balls get so much momentum off the bat it that it can sometimes be impossible to react in time.

That doesn't surprise me.
D-Lee is a genuinely good guy and he’s well aware of what can happen when your child has a serious medical problem. Good for him.

I don't know if we can get a BCB check and a card....
given to him Al, but I would be happy to mail you a check, if there is a way you or another BCB’er could get it to him in the hospital to let him and his family know there are a group of Cubs fans pulling for him and wanting to help and support.
Thoughts are with him and his family.

Well, Al, you know how I feel about BCB helping others....
Send me an email so we can get a check to you. Thanks.
I know I am not one of the “gang” here but I think that, besides me and my lovely wife, there are folks here with a little something laying around to pitch in and help. So, BCB’ers, lets get something going for young Dominic and his folks. Even insured, this is a MAJOR expense and I am sure all help would be appreciated.

Yes, you’re part of the “gang” here. Everyone is.
Thanks for all your thoughts. If there’s a donation, etc. I’ll contact the Cubs and find out who it should go to.

If anyone has today's dead-tree edition of the Sun-Times...
... there were photos of Lilly and Lee leaving the hospital after their visit.
Classy move, and classy on the part of the team to give the kid all the memorabilia. I’m sure they’ll welcome him back to a game after he’s recovered.
