there you go again!
I love and appreciate sabermetrics, but how can Theriot’s recent production be wrong? Is there something on your blog about this?
Help me Obi-ONEDEC. You're our only hope.
Selective endpoints.
His recent production isn’t wrong, it’s just an incomplete picture of who he is as a hitter. I’ve written plenty about Theriot on multiple blogs, and there’s a request on Skribit for me to go back to that well.
I haven't compared the numbers...
but it seems he had a little more pop last year.
"Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." - Jacque Barzun
by Bump Bailey on Jul 12, 2008 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions
He did, but at the same time he had a below-average walk rate.
I’d expect his walk rate to decline a bit, and his power production to increase a bit. Of course, I’ve been expecting this for a while now, so maybe it’s never going to happen.
see iowa cub
anything theriot does good is an “incomplete picture.” anything he does poorly is “the real theriot.”
getting a solid lead off single? failure. 3 and 4 hitter failing to score the run? best piece of hitting in the inning.
make sense?
Ramirez hit a screaming line drive...
...that’s a hit nine times out of ten, and Lee’s hit had a good shot at being a double. That’s how you want those guys to hit the ball.
Theriot got the ball off the end of the bat – he would even probably tell you that he was trying to square the ball up a bit more and hit a line drive. It’s about process, not results.
isn't it about both?
but i agree with you on lee and aram. i just think it’s amusing how far people will go to avoid saying anything good about theriot…
I'm a sabermagician, not a scout...
...but when you’re scouting or coaching, you’re looking at how a player swings more than what happens when he swings. You want Lee and Ramirez to go out there and do what they did at the plate in the first inning – they did their jobs, and you just have to tip your caps to the other team and say they made some good plays in the field.
Theriot “missed” on that hit in the first inning, but missed in his favor. Heck, even Bob Brenly said as much, and if he could get his hands on a set of ovaries he’d have Theriot’s babies.
LOL
that’s gold!

Sorry, it's just somewhat of a similar pitching style
However, Harden mechanics are far better than Prior mechanics.
harden's
are a little odd, too. that weird little 87mph thing he throws has got some filthy movement on it. pitches aren’t supposed to move like that. hopefully that’s not gonna strain his shoulder…
harden almost seems really over the top with his arm, and falls off to the side a bit. probably not a big deal, but odd.
The only problem with Harden
Is tat he needs to rely more on the movement of the fastball rather than velocity. Sometimes he overdoes it with his 98 mph fastball. Just ask Big Z and he will tell that a 93 mph fastball is enough to get people out.
Harden mixes speeds on his fastball.
He starts off the game around 92 mph, and his velocity goes UP the more he pitches. Very odd. I suspect he dials up the speed when needs it, to save strain on his arm.
I read that
He stopped throwing one of his pitches to also ease his arm. I feel like it was a cutter or something similar, but don’t remember…just remember being surprised that it wasn’t a slider or slurve or something that usually leads to arm trouble.
Zambrano viciously attacked a pair of watercoolers for the crime of being within his line of vision. It was a classic battle of man versus inanimate object.
What I really like about Harden so far...
...is that when his defense lets him down like that, he just bears down and strands the guy on second. Utterly filthy strikeouts.

good stuff there.
i thought i read that harden had more or less given up the splitter to protect the shoulder…
What it looks like to me...
...is that he’s throwing a lot more changeups than in years past, throwing fewer sliders and vastly fewer splitters. Down from about 20% of his pitches down to 7%.

what is that pitch
i guess that could be his splitter? some sort of slider? odd that it almost backs up while breaking down pretty sharply. his over the top delivery makes for some strange movement…
yeah, i saw that
but i thought his slider was the one he was throwing in the first inning. a lot tighter break, and went down and in to a lefty. that thing to molina was loopier and breaking the other way almost. maybe he just throws it a little different depending on the situation.
