Yeah, I know what you mean

But - and I hate this phrase - sometimes you have to tip your cap … and it’s not like Dempster stunk today, either.

Still three innings left, though. And we’ve already seen what the Giants bullpen can be like.

True, True

I hate that phrase too. Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale must roll in their graves when they hear that. But I know whatcha mean.

Surprised to see Dempster start the 7th.

It’s the All-Star break, you can use a lot of pitchers today.

Maybe Lou figures Dempster's getting a lot of rest

after this. Granted, he’s an All-Star, but he probably isn’t going to pitch, no?

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jul 13, 2008 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Think I already heard he's not pitching.

I’ll be pissed if he does.

It's his bullpen day

so he might be available to throw some

by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 13, 2008 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably not.

I know that he said he was looking forward to it but Lou is on the coaching staff and will probably put a kibosh on that. I would hope

it would be nice, but more rest is more important in the long run than this game, i believe

Taking two out of three and losing to Lincecum is not exactly a bad effort.

by sackings108 on Jul 13, 2008 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I beg to differ

It would be nice if the Cubs won, but they don’t “need” to win. They’ve already won the series. A victory today is a bonus. The Cubs have been hot, and the Giants have lost six in a row.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Jul 13, 2008 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't Beg

j/k

I said “need to” because StL and the Brewers are winning today. I’d hate to give back a game in the standings to those two.

Paging my friendly neighborhood SABRmetrician...

‘Splain this:

Riot has more PAs than DeRo (387-358), a higher OBP (.396 – .378), and he normally hits at the top of the order - in front of the big RBI guys - but…

DeRo has scored 56 runs to Riot’s 52. That doesn’t make sense! What’s going on?

(FWIW, DLee has 63, Dome and Ramy 59 each…)

I would also imagine slugging numbers have something to do with this

Easier to score when you hit more 2Bs (or HRs, obviously) then when you single a lot

by cocknfire on Jul 13, 2008 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Plus CS, and being the first part of a lot of double plays

And yeah you’re absolutely right – SLG has a lot to do with it as well.

by Wreckard on Jul 13, 2008 3:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's easier to score from second than first.

It’s harder to score when you get thrown out five feet from the bag.

Do you have any "outs on the bases" stats for this year?

Nope.

Normally I get Play-By-Play data updates only in the offseason.

by cwyers on Jul 13, 2008 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

OK

It just seems weird that the “table setter” (who hasn’t missed many games) is only fifth on the team in runs.

Maybe there is no logical explanation?

DeRo usually bats 6th or 7th—no genuine run producers behind him…

And have 2 innings of Giants bullpen coming up

by jajonez77 on Jul 13, 2008 3:08 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Why is the Giants' bullpen coming up?

Lincecum batted in this inning, meaning he’s going to pitch the 7th, at least. He may go into the 8th as well.
