Carlos Marmol to replace Kerry Wood on All-Star roster
Making it 8?
Wood will not play in the 2008 All-Star Game but will attend the festivities. Marmol (2-3, 4.13 ERA, 3 Sv, 52.1 IP, 29 H, 70 SO) was selected because he was the relief pitcher who received the next highest vote total on the Player Ballot.
I'm hoping he doesn't pitch in the game -- he really needs the time off, maybe even moreso than Wood.

I predict Marmol will throw the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th, and if it should go extras, he'd be good to go.

Then he'll throw a
complete game shutout, in relief, on Friday.

And he also pitches for both teams in the Futures Game and pitches for all of the HR derby.

that we have a re-vote now.

Since this game counts for home field advantage
I would much prefer a pitcher from a different team whose is doing good to take that spot. It might be needed.

I agree and that is a very good point....games that are so well evenly matched
...like this often come down to the bullpens and the NL relievers cant even come close to matching the AL guns like Rivera, Papelbon, Nathan and of course K Rod.
Talk about firepower.
Not sure that a replacement for Marmol would even begin to match that roster though.

Maybe Lou'll come to his senses
and not use him. Then again, knowing Lou….

Lou's not the manager
Although I’d assume he would be consulted since he’ll be there.

Not because of his performance,
But I was really stoked to see Wood in the all star game. Disappointed, actually. He’s always been one of my favs, so I guess… oh well.
Since Soriano, Wood aren’t in the game, do they get the bonus and contract bonus’? Anyone know?
Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!

I hope Woody still goes...
...and that Marmol learns something on the trip. Hopefully from the bench, as I’d love to see him get some rest.

He earned the votes to be there.
He was selected because he had the most votes after Wood (see the main post above).
But, like many of you, I would have preferred that Mármol rested during the break. Throwing more is the opposite of what he needs right now.

The Cubs could have had him decline the spot if they were that concerned.

He needs rest,
but necessarily for his arm. He needs to get to bed earlier.

Marmol
isn’t hurt. Lou left him in that game Saturday because he was pissed at him and wanted to teach him a lesson.

Maybe, but...
... do you really want to risk losing a game for that purpose? Lou hates losing.

Marmol deserves the spot
despite his recent struggles. It just seems ironic right now because he has sucked, but in the overall scheme of things he deserves the bid. On that note, he DEFINATLY needs the rest, or looking at it in a positive way, maybe if he pitches in the all-star game he can boost his confidence

If anyone wants to leave a paragraph or two describing their thoughts on the first half
I am really curious to see what people think here on my post from last night, Breathe, breathe in the air. I dont mean to self advertise my post, but I would like to see where people are generally standing right now half way through the season

Is it odd
that I’m really hoping Marmol will be there, but sit it out, and Demp will take a moment to revive his closer role? I’d be more comfortable with that.
I love Marmol and am really happy for him—but dude. This is so not the right move! And losing home field if he comes in while he’s struggling so much scares me a lot.
Totally cool that he was the next highest reliever on the players ballots though. Shows a lot of respect for the Cubs pen that those two went 1-2.

Remember our closer Dempster?
Do we need to revisit those days in such an important game? Plus, Ryan doesn’t seem to pitch well in NY—-maybe that’s just Shea but still I don’t want him anywhere near a closing spot in this situation.

Having thrown as many pitches as he did yesterday...
... I think Dempster’s going to just enjoy the scenery in New York.

ak & Al
Both points taken.
I’m just super nervous about Marmol at the moment, and have never really cared about the ASG until this year.

Everyone is nervous
Which is why I highly doubt he will pitch unless they run out of arms. Remember he was elected because he was next in line from voting…
