Scott Eyre's rehab start for Peoria

...didn't go all that great. He gave up 4 hits and 2 earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

I don't know if maybe he's not ready to come back yet or maybe it's just because he's a reliever. I don't know much about minor league ball/rehab so I don't know if they start major-league relievers on rehab assignments very often.

Anywho, this was a much more interesting game than last night to sit and watch. I'm pretty new around here so I don't know if I'm allowed to steal Josh77's thunder and give you the results, so I'll wait patiently for his minor league wrap post tonight, but I thought you guys would like to hear an update on Eyre's rehab.

Never

judge a pitcher in a rehab start by their stat line.

These guys aren’t trying to get batters out. They’re trying to work on pitches that are causing them problems, usually a breaking ball. So they go up to these hitters and throw nothing but sliders and if a Class A hitter knows a slider is coming, they can hit it—especially if they’ve seen it thrown two or three times earlier in the at bat.

I’ve seen pitchers get shelled in rehab starts (Randy Johnson, for example) and then pitch great in their next major league appearance. The major league pitcher simply doesn’t care if they get a batter out. They’re trying to throw without pain and find their rhythm, that’s all.

Now if someone say Eyre’s outing and said he was laboring, then I might worry. But the stat line means absolutely nothing. Seriously. It means less than nothing.

One question does remain, though.

Is there any significance to the fact that he started rather than relieved?

Probably so he could go home earlier

If they’re only going to pitch an inning, and if they’re a ways from home, they’ll have them pitch the first inning and split. Kerry Wood did that on his last rehab assignment in Peoria.

I wonder if Scott is living out of his RV in Peoria.

If so, maybe someone who lives out that way could stop in and have a beer with him.

He hasn't been in Peoria

The games in which he appeared for the Chiefs were at Kane County and West Michigan.

Are you thinking of the late Rod Beck?

No, Eyre showed up at spring training this year...

...in an RV that he drove across the country with a couple other players. Here’s a link to the story. Sadly, one of his travelling companions was none other than the recently traded Sean Gallagher.

Usually

the major league reliever starts so that they can be sure to get their work in. The fact that they can leave early is a factor too, although Eyre “started” in his last appearance too. (He started the second day of a game that had been suspended the night before, so it wasn’t a start on the stat line.)

They start in the begining

of the game so that they can get there work done, and get ready to move if need to be. I was talking to the Kane County Cougars manager the night/day of his outing July 11th when they played against the Kane County Cougars. They have the major league pitcher go out at the start so that A) they can get what they need to work on and be done with it, and move up (work at AA or AAA league)and B) incase the weather gets worse later on they can pitch earlier and not have to wait around for the weather to go by.

Thanks for the explanations.

Makes a lot of sense.

I remember hearing this

I remember hearing this last year when kerry Wood was rehabbing. When you get them in early you know what the game situation is going to be as well.

Getting Stevie back would be big

but do the Cubs go after another LHP out of the pen? I just read this article on Yahoo about Will Ohman that got me wondering about that. He seems to be doing well this year, specially against LH bats. Anyone have any other ideas as to what good LHP might be trade possibilities?

Go ahead, Z me.

I think the Cubs ARE looking for a LHP>

But it won’t be Will Ohman.

Is this something Deep Goat has told you?

That we’re looking for a left-handed reliever.

by inukjim on Jul 14, 2008 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

NOOOO!!!!

Not the Human Scowl!!! And I don’t understand why the Cubs would be looking for a lefthanded reliever when they already have a rehabbing Scott Eyre and Neil Cotts. Fuentes is the only name that would appear to be an upgrade over those two. Or am I forgetting someone?

Sherill possibly

But I highly doubt MacFail will be reasonable.

Oh, right.

Yeah, we know how that goes.
