Joe Morgan Hatefest: Continued!
I was on Rotoworld this morning to see whose arms had fallen off overnight and who I needed to pick up for the handful of fantasy games this week, and I happened to notice a very interesting article at the top of their page... the article was titled, "Joe Morgan's classic geezer mistake." Like a kid seeing boobs on the internet for the first time, I immediately clicked the link.
Apparently NBC Sports has deemed Joe Morgan their "Whiner of the Week" for some rant he had saying how today's generation of players have no respect for the All Star game, and that ratings used to be higher because they left the starters in the whole game...
What a moron. Maybe they left the starters in, because ONLY STARTERS WENT??? Come on Joe, just retire... you've had enough of this... not only are you making up phony names for the basket at Wrigley, but now you're posthumously expanding the All-Star rosters of yore... just hang it up man, you've had a good run... but it's time to sit in a rocking chair and complain about the kids and their rap music.

On a related note...
...I finally got around to watching Cubs Forever: Celebrating 60 Years of WGN-TV and the Chicago Cubs in its entirety last night. I’d seen parts of it previously but never the whole thing all the way though, and it had been sitting on my DVR for several weeks.
In any case, every time I watched Ernie Banks hit a home run (and I believe there are at least three different ones shown), I couldn’t help but think of the ridiculous statements Morgan made during a recent Cubs broadcast regarding Banks, the basket and a certain fictitious boulevard. None of the home runs depicted in the documentary in question came anywhere near the basket – in fact, one even left the ballpark.
Obviously that’s a small sample, but I couldn’t help getting pissed off all over again anyway. I’d still love to see a Cubs fan – or even someone within the organization – confront Morgan about this issue to his face. Imagine if Lou interrupted an in-game interview to make the point. Yeah, it’ll probably never happen, but it was at least a little soothing to play out “revenge fantasies” like this in my head.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
As much as like piling on the hate when it comes to Joe Morgan...
and I don’t agree with his assessment for why the game’s ratings are down-you have your facts wrong here-there has always been a bench full of reserve players for the all-star game.
The dude just sucks...

All-Stars Used to Care More
The players used to take the ASG more seriously. When you look to see how deep into the game starters stayed in the game, that seems very apparent. There was a fair amount of stars changing leagues during Morgan’s time. Think about Frank Robinson, Gaylord Perry, Ferguson Jenkins, and Rollie Fingers. Players took pride in their league, no matter which one is was at the time. Pete Rose certainly took the game seriously bowling over Ray Fosse.
I don’t agree with Morgan about why the ratings are down for the game. The ASG before cable TV and long before Extra Innings was the only opportunity a lot of fans got a chance to see many of the All-Stars play. That’s why fans made a special point to watch the game. That’s why the ratings used to be better.

Maybe they'd care more
if the fans weren’t allowed to vote players in? I know I would care more if someone put a stop to this joke.
100% agree!!!

The fans are doing a decent job these days.
I credit the internet. But for whatever reason, the MLB fan vote has been very decent lately. 15 years ago, it was a complete joke, like the Gold Glove voting. (I don’t think Barry Larkin ever got in over Ozzie Smith, even when Smith was a shell of his former slap-hitting self.) But this year, I can’t really point to any egregious choices by the fans. (Except our own Kosuke…. but I won’t raise a huge fuss over that.)
Ratings are down b/c of Interleague.
The ASG and World Series used to be the only chance to see AL players take on NL players. As such, they were unique events, and quite interesting. Now, thanks to a decade plus of interleague play, the exotic nature of seeing the leagues square off has completely vanished.
Interleague play has turned the World Series into just another round of playoffs, and has turned the All-Star Game into a Pro-Bowl level annoyance for everyone involved, both fans and spectators.
Mike and Mike in the morning...
today were offering some type of bid for a charitable cause thing this am that included among other things a chance to mett Joe Morgan and Jon Miller. Hmmmm…...Initially I thought it was a drawing type thing and i figured if i won, I wouldn’t accept….but then….what if—i could use it as a chance to lobby for Ron Santo?
"Red Sox Nation: In your opinion, who’s the best player not in the HOF?

Don't use your chance for that
Ron Santo for the HoF is one thing on which Morgan agrees with Cub fans.
