Sheets named NL all-star starter, plus NL Lineup note
Guess this is somewhat surprising, I expected it to be Zambrano, but today Hurdle named Sheets the starting pitcher. And now i have to fill up this limit. What do you guys think about this, who would you have preferred? I'll put up a poll I guess. So what o you guys think about Ryan Theriot? Just kidding... I hope the NL can actually win this year, it would be nice to get home field if we make it to the WS. Rambling.... wordy word wordy word...
EDIT: It was also just announced that Kosuke will be batting 8th, and Geovany batting 9th in the lineup.

Doesn't really matter.
Since Z last threw on Wednesday and isn’t scheduled to pitch till Saturday, the ASG is a good place for him to throw one inning… the starter (IIRC) usually goes two.
Sheets has had a good first half, too. No problem with this.

And
I know this sounds odd, but with Soto catching Sheets, maybe he can see something in him that we can exploit in the second half. Unlikely, but who knows, Soto is a pretty smart guy.

I love it
Geo needs to call for nothing but splitters and sliders.

I thought it would make sense to have
Zambrano pitch to Soto to start off, since Soto knows his pitches. To me, that makes the battery that much better when the catcher knows his pitcher. God, I sound like Joe Morgan, don’t I?

It does make sense.
Let’s let Sheets throw a couple of innings, while Z only throws one. Maybe it will hasten the impending injury to Sheets in the 2nd half.

+1
let Sheets go the whole way! Too bad Dusty isn’t managing the team.
Seriously though…............Ben Sheets is way overdue for a nice DL stint

Sorry, but i think Sheets
deserves the start. I’m happy for him… honestly. The guy has been through a lot in his career injury-wise. I don’t really see it as a BIG DEAL… so long as the Cubs THUMP him during the season!

No biggie
Ok with Sheets starting. So where’s the lineup note in the title?
Go ahead, Z me.

Its almost as if it was literally a flip of the coin.
I wouldnt be surprised if they actually flipped the coin, haha, maybe Zambrano just coming off the DL has something to do with it…. or i am overlooking this and Sheets is just really really on fire this year

On paper...
...I’m much more scared of that NL team – and Sheets over Lee, for that matter. Jeter, Youk, and Pedroria do nothing for me – while look at their counterparts – Hanley, Sir Lance, and Utley. Dare I say this is the NL’s year….

If this is our year..maybe the NL can finally snap out of it....
I’m with you on the AL lineup not seeming all that scary on the surface…the pitchers will make the difference either way.

Was thinking the same thing
1, 2, 3 in the lineup:
Ichiro/Jeter/Hamilton
or
Ramirez/Utley/Fat Elvis?
‘nuff said.

Catcher batting low in the order
It makes sense, since there are only a few catchers on each team, and that way each can play several innings while only batting a couple times.

Jeter is overrated
His defense is subpar and hitting isn’t that great. Honestly, I’m sick of the Yankee players getting the nod over players that truly deserve it. Jeter may be the face of the Yankees and one of the idols in MLB, but ESPN always portray him as some baseball god.

Sheets starting sounds right to me.
I’d say only Lincecum and Volquez have been better, and both of them started real games too recently.
by HereComesASpecialBoy on Jul 14, 2008 11:46 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
so hurdle will do something like this?
sheets 2 IP, Z in the 3rd, Webb the 4th, Volquez 5th, Harren 6th, Wilson 7th, Wagnes 8th, Lidge 9th. thoughts?
by Ratola on Jul 14, 2008 12:17 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Personally I think Webb deserves the start
more than Z or Sheets. If you aren’t giving it to Lincecum or Volquez who have been the best, I’d go with Webb and his 13 wins and ERA reasonably close to Zambrano and Sheets.
If it came down to Sheets and Zambrano, it’s a toss-up to me.

Never before will I be so in to the All-Star game.
It is HUGE for the Cubs this year if they can make it to the WS.

It's damn close...
...but Sheets has been a touch better, at least statistically. The only exception is ERA+, where Big Z holds the edge. I don’t quite understand why, but maybe someone a little more versed in stats than I am can explain.
Here’s a quick rundown of the numbers I usually look at:
Sheets: 2.85 ERA/1.114 WHIP/.235 BAA (150 ERA+, 3.39 FIP) over 123 innings.
Zambrano: 2.84 ERA/1.23 WHIP/.243 BAA (157 ERA+, 3.68 FIP) over 120.3 innings.

If my understanding is correct
ERA+ incorporates park factors – and I think Wrigley is considered a better hitters’ park than Miller.

This just in

You are sooooo right....
I wish it would go back to alternating between the NL and AL. MLB did it this way for years- with no problems, that is until Bud Selig got involved and decided that, “this time it counts.” HEY BUD, IT’S AN EXHIBITION GAME, LET’S KEEP IT THAT WAY.

Can't agree with "best record" because............
..................a team could pile up a great record in a weak league.
The NFL, NHL and NBA play far more interdivisional games, so the best record should prevail. Even with interleague play, MLB is handled differently.
Returning to an alternating schedule is the way it should be. Unfortunately we’re stuck with another one of “Selig’s Follies”. Stupid.

Or...
... how about the league that has the most wins in interleague play gets the home field?

How about we go back to alternating?
It worked fine for years, before Selig decided to turn in an exhibition into something other than an exhibition.

That's a bit of a crap shoot............
...............as well, Al. Again, you may catch a weak season one way or the other, or perhaps teams are just not playing well at the time. In addition, the number of games played is, in my opinion, not enough to provide a definitive position on the matter (and no, I’m not espousing more games for interleague play).

At least that would make meaningful games mean something more.
And for the poster(s) above backing the “alternating years” scheme, you’d scream awful loud if, say, the Cubs were the NL rep with 100 wins (nice dream, right?) and the AL team had only 90. “Unfair!” you’d yell.

I would actually prefer that all 8 Cubs see no action tonight.
I also hope they they go to bed right after the HR Derby & ASG
ANd after the ASG, I hope the go directly home and not to their home country for 36 HRS.

ASG is meaninless (well sorta, we do want home field) let others teams carry the load here
