New Slogan

Now that the Cubs have entered the All-Star Break (which isn't that big a break for the huge chunk of the team making the trip to Yankee Stadium) with the best record in the NL, it's time to start realizing our place in history. We are the fans that so many waited to become. We are the fans that millions have wept before. This is our time.

How many of us have been waiting for 2008 thinking "this is going to be the year"? How many of us had that nagging little voice last year against Arizona that said "this isn't quite right, it's supposed to be 100, not 99"? This is the year that was predestined and propose that we all band together behind something magical. Out with "It's gonna happen" and in with...

20F8

Two Thousand Fate: A Century in the Making

This Team. This Time.

100 Years of Destiny

Who's with me? This is OUR time. Embrace it.

CUBS- NEXT YEAR IS NOT AN OPTION.

I like that one.

“20F8” is kinda clever, but it just doesn’t work for me.

“2008 Cubs: Next year is not an option!”... Now THERE’S a slogan!

"I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game." - Walt Whitman

We Need No Slogan

Slogans are stupid and gimmicky. Nothing more than the classic “Next year is here!” which has been our rally cry for generations is needed.

There is no place like Nebraska - Go Huskers!

In a way, yes

But it’s classic.

What's wrong with gimmicky?

I love a great rally-cry. I think solidarity for a team this popular makes it an even greater experience. When’s the last time you felt this good in July? Cherish it!

Get back to me around September 15th...

Otherwise, just relax and take it one game at a time…

And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue. --Steve Goodman

Ow-uh TEAM ow-uh TIME!

Is what this sounds like.

The intro song is what needs to be addressed

Why it isn’t “Right Now” by Van Halen is beyond me – the great intro music, the lyrics (Don’t wanna wait ‘til tomorrow; why put it off another day), the way it crescendos into a heavier song than as it starts – it was tailor-made for this season.

CRAFTY BEAVER!!!

You're partly right

On-Base Percentage has almost everything to do with it, but who would have thought that they would magically become great at getting on base out of the blue? The stars are aligned. 100 years, when it happens, will not be a coincidence…but it will be two things that coincide. Maybe that IS coincidence…Should the t-shirt read “1908-2008…what a coincidence?”

Nothing to do with Magic

Look, its cool your excited, heck I am too…but I refuse to call it magical or out of the blue. This is a damn good team, filled with players who perform at multiple levels. And with some manuvering by the front office the team has become better. Why can’t you just be happy that it is the human ability of the players on the field that accounts for their success?

by StevenABQ on Jul 14, 2008 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

IF the Cubs win the World Series this year...

...and, as good as this team is, that’s still a huge IF…yeah, it would be pretty weird. Sure, even cosmic. But here’s the thing: THEY HAVEN’T WON ANYTHING YET. So how ‘bout we just chill, stay the course and save the magical allusions for the victory parade. A simple “Go Cubs!” works just fine for me.

That's what great about 20F8

If I had posted this any other year, the first 20 comments would have been about how stupid I am to make assumptions. You are probaby the 40th post and you’re the first to tell me I’m getting ahead of myself.

in 2008 we all believe. We are starting to find out what it’s like to love a team that we believe in whole-heartedly. Sure, we see the flaws. We all wonder what will happen when Marquis takes the mound or which Lilly will show up, but when we lost to Lincecum yesterday we took it in stride and tipped our cap and we refused to turn on our manager because it’s okay to lose a hard-fought game against a great pitcher when you’ve taken 2 of 3. You dont like, but you don’t hate yourself for it.

This year is different and I hearby declare it 20F8.

You ask...

...”How many of us had that nagging little voice last year against Arizona that said ‘this isn’t quite right, it’s supposed to be 100, not 99’?”

Um, well, speaking for myself, I never felt that way. I would have gladly accepted a World Series victory last year. I never thought the Cubs rather embarassingly short playoff run last year had anything to do with 100 years of anything. It had to do with strong Arizona pitching, a teamwide offensive slump, and the ill-timed struggles of Ted Lilly and Rich Hill.

And, quite frankly, why would we want to emphasize the fact that it’s been 100 years since the Cubs have won a championship? Isn’t that what fans of other teams do? Isn’t that what the mainstream media at large does – incessantly? You can keep your “catchy” slogan, thanks. Call me cynical, but I get the feeling that a sales pitch of some kind is coming soon after we buy into it.

Nanika Ga Okoru!

You're taking it the wrong way...

Everyone wanted a World Series last year. To question that would be moronic.

I also blame last year on a premature yank of Zambrano in Game 1, but if you’re trying to argue that the inviisble hand of Karma didn’t cause the Cubs to lose to the D-Backs last year then…duh. I can’t think of another response.

If you’re going to go to read your physics book to tell me that the Cubs are not winning this year based on the fact that it is 2008 then you can save your time. I just want to see a million Cubs fans with a rally-cry. When the Portland Trailblazers were respectable the whole state had a tacky, neon orange sign in their house and car windows that read “Rip City!” and it brought a bond that wouldn’t have been acheived without it.

I want to emphasize the fact that it’s been 100 years because Cubs fans deserve this more than anyone. It’s our turn. I’m tired of losing and I want to savor it all year long…not just after my cynicism erodes after the very last out is made in October.

...but if this is a sales pitch, I ain’t buyin’. And if it’s not, I’d say you just need to chill out and find some other way to channel your enthusiasm. I don’t think Cubs fans need some contrived digi-slogan to get pumped up about this team.

100 years

If anything, I was thinking last year and this year could be back to back WS championships 100 years after the last time . . . not that they were supposed to wait until this year to win one.

by Shanghai Badger on Jul 14, 2008 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its the same reason

I hate stupid monickers like “lovable losers”. IMHO These kinds of slogan diminish the hard work that everyone on the team has put in. From the front office to the grounds crew. This year will be our year…not because of some silly notion that fate or destiny had a hand in it, it will be our year because its the best team I have seen take the field in my lifetime. A team with hardworking, skilled, and talented players, that is how they are going to make it.

by StevenABQ on Jul 14, 2008 3:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Hard work

To argue that anything woudl dimish the hard work put in is silly. Aside from blatant steroid allegations affecting players on this team, nothing is going to tarnish it. I get your point, but come on. 20F8 diminish anything or anyone. Do you really think someone would sit around and say “2000 fate? Dang, I thought The Riot was just playing really hard…stoopid me.” ?

by 20F8 on Jul 14, 2008 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

As I said it was my opinion

And no matter how you angle or spin it, I think such sappy cornball slogans or phrases belittle the real reason for the teams success. It doesn’t have anything to do with goats or curses.. Those make for silly folklore. The sooner more Cubs fans appreciate that this fanchise, while rich in history, is a real baseball club, and not a caricature of mediocrity…the better.

by StevenABQ on Jul 14, 2008 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think...

I don’t think it’ s Cubs fans that see this franchise as a “caricature of mediocrity”. 100 years is fact. No Cubs fans tout “Loveable Losers”, that’s for the ignorant and the haters. A question to ask might be “why hasn’t this franchise looked this good in your lifetime?” I think the 1989 and even 1984 team looked very good. I think that another manager would have taken the 2003 team the World Series. It’s amazing that this has so far been such a great year with the ownership of the team and the stadium in limbo. Let yourself get caught up in the moment.

It’s not a decision, it’s a series of decisions. It’s the decision to hire an individual who then makes more bad decisions. The past is the past, but have loved to hate and hated to love the CUbs for years. I have tried to convince myself that you can’t love a uniform or a stadium, but I never believed me. I wanted badly to care about the Diamondbacks winning with Mark Grace, but I just didn’t feel anything. I take it personally when the Cubs lose. In 2003 a coworker made fun of me right aftter the Game 7 lost and I nearly punched the guy. I have hated the Cubs, but only because I love them. I don’t know how you can do it any other way.

Dude...

It’s really simple. Most Cubs fans don’t want to draw attention to the fact that it’s been 100 years since the team won the WS. A good number of us on BCB don’t believe it has anything to do with fate. Not winning the WS in 100 years has everything to do with inept management and poor decisions, not anything to do with curses, or the like. I don’t think anyone here agrees that they thought last year, being 99 yrs., wasn’t right, and for some reason, 100 yrs. actually seemed better, i.e. to round off the number. I KNOW that no one here hates the CUBS, just some of the things that were done, and that happened. Now, with all that being said, and not to rip on you, but… A slogan should be something that is catchy, and easily understood. Your slogan is neither. Just saying…

I don't know about "Most Cubs fans"...

but the fact that I have never experienced a World Series victory is going to make it that much sweeter. I have no problem with attention to the drought.

Two-Tousand Fate is pretty catchy…it sounds pretty much just like the year. If you can say the year, you can say the slogan. It doesn’t seem to be easily understood, but that’s the beauty. If Cubs fans get it, who cares if nobody else does. Think Eamus Catuli or ACXXXXXX.

20F8 encapsulates MY belief that this is the year. I haven’t said that before. Not in 199F8 (kidding), not ever. I want to walk up to a guy on the street in a Cubs hat and have something to say besides “Go Cubs” so I know he’s the die-hard I am. I’ve been waiting for this and I’m going to enjoy the ride.

Ok, ok...

I just know that I, (and I think others here), are tired of hearing about the 100 yr. thing in the national media. If you want to bring attention to the drought, who am I to stop you? Now saying your slogan phonetically is catchy, but 20F8 is confusing, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks so. Eamus Catuli is Latin, not a slogan. I stand by my assertion that a slogan should be catchy and easily understood. It has nothing to do with whether a Cubs fan, or a non-Cubs fan understands it. It’s confusing. Believe me, if you believe this is the year, you have ever right to shout it from the roof tops. If you want something, besides a Cub t-shirt or hat to let you know that a person is the “die hard” that you are, by all means, print up some shirts and hats and do it. I’ve been waiting for this for years…. Many many years, but I don’t think it has anything to do with fate, or whether it’s our, (Cubs), turn or time. It has everything to do with Hendry and Piniella making the number one goal to win it all, which they are doing. I just think your idea is confusing & not catchy. If you need to run it up the flag pole to see who salutes, I wonder how great you think your idea is. Now, before you hit back with your response, telling me that you’re right, and I don’t speak for anyone else- remember that you made this post, and asked all of us what we thought. If you didn’t want to know what we think, why did you ask?

Why are you assuming all this?

I’m not telling you I’m right. I’m not telling you that you’re wrong. I told you that it is a bit confusing. It’s the one thing I have been trying to overcome about it. I was hoping that adding at “A Century in the Making” to the end would be a nice way to make people “get it”. But then I realized, people are only going to get it by word of mouth. Word of mouth is only going to exist if I tell people about it. So here I am.

My belief was that if the initial “my eye doesn’t recognize ‘20F8’ so my brain doesn’t know what to do with it” could be overcome that it could be a Cubs fan handshake for this season. Why not name the season? It fits, it’s simple.

I understand that most of you guys are shooting me down, but understand that this is a niche community. This is not a cross section of Cubs fans, you are the guys that BCB, right? You have the Cubs tatoo on your arm, you don’t buy tag-lines. That doens’t make it a bad slogan,

If the Chicago National League Ballclub machine were to make it their 2008 marketing campaign I think fandom would eat it up, but a franchise doesn’t claim that they are predestined to win. It’s “fans” aka “fanatics” who say things like that. Do I think the hand of fate has predetermined that the Cubs win this year? GIve me a break. I think that 2008 is deserving of a name and why not put it out there now rather than in hindsight. These are our Cubs. This is ow-uh year (did I get that right? I have no idea what the reference point is). These are NOT your typical Cubs. They’re better than that.

I think my idea would be great if someone else had thought of it. I think you would think it was great if you had thought of it. I get that it’s not perfect, but what is? I don’t even know any other Cubs sites because I’m much like you guys, I have my own way of loving the Cubs. I have hard opinions about them all the time and nobody changes my mind about them. They’re like a girlfriend, they’re too close for me to be objective. II have no idea how bad they are most pre-seasons because I always think they’re going to win.

Also, Right Now would be a great theme song for whoever said that.

You are preaching to the wrong congregation here...

My impression of this board is we don’t believe in black cats, goats, hobgoblins or other assorted furry creatures, nor do we believe fate (sorry, F8) has anything to do with winning a championship.

Generally, it requires mental discipline, excellent defense, hitting with runners in scoring position, and lights out starting pitching.

Go peddle this idea down the street at the Pink Cub Hat Store.

I'm not trying to come down on you.

If I am coming across that way, then I apologize. I simply don’t agree with you. If I had thought of this idea, I would still think it was confusing. If Daver or Drew thought of it, I would still think it was confusing. If SWL thought this up, I wouldn’t think it was great. I stand by my assertion that it IS NOT catchy, and that IT IS confusing. With that all this said, I do not want to devolve into an argument here. I admire your dedication. I love your enthusiasm. I respect your idea. I just don’t think it would catch on. That’s all, nothing else. Most of all, don’t let us shooting down your idea dissuade you from continuing to post on here.

Now saying your slogan phonetically is catchy, but 20F8 is confusing, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks so.

Yeah, it looks like a Simpsons episode reference number.

I'll never quite understand

You don’t see Cleveland fans carrying on about their drought. Or even Giants fans… Why is it that some Cubs fans have to get all caught up this syrupy-sentamentalist crap? I’m not jaded, but I am a realist. And as such, I chalk up the teams performance to their (at times) stellar peformance. I do not need years of mismanagement of the team -resulting in a long post-season drought - to be blamed on fate or destiny…or the Easter Bunny.

by StevenABQ on Jul 14, 2008 4:07 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Umm

maybe because we have had so many chances slip away, and maybe the fact that a century is alot longer than half of one (or whatever the Indians and Giants are at). And when I talkabout chances slipping, notice the fact that I dont blame it on guys with headsets and glasses, or goats, or whatever it may be.

The Cubs and their fans don't need slogans

If you are trying to tell me that the fans or the players need a slogan to get psyched up to win a ballgame or win a championship, then I don’t wany any part of the fans or the team. The point of this game and any game is to win. If your goal is not to win, than there is no reason to play. Are you going to win everytime? No, but that is always the goal.

It takes four things to win a championship: Skill, Heart, Determination, and Luck. In years past, we have run short on the luck. We have the skill, the heart and the determination to win it this year…whether we have the luck is question that will only be determined by playing the games.

Ha ha ha...

Well, maybe you’re the new kid that I can rip on now that I have been initiated? What are you talking about? You make some valuable points though, “You play to win the game”. I think Herm WIllingham beat you to that one.

I’m pretty sure that it takes more than 4 things and one is intelligent decision making. This has also been in short supply on other teams. Also, heart and determination are synonymous.

Also…20F8…because it has a little “ring” to it.

JUST WIN.

That’s the only “slogan” I need.

Please stop...

with all these destiny pieces. I cannot take it. I just do not like seeing these things and random KOW diaries saying “Remember everything so you can tell your grandkids” blah blah blah.

Save it until it actually happens. Then feel free to get all sentimental and slogan-happy. Al makes the observation from time to time that this is a “special” team and I’d like to limit it to just that. Yes, this team has proved itself where others have failed….but let’s not put the cart before the horse.

I just get leery of so much hype…feel like it’ll just lead to more devastation. But I guess that cynicism comes from being a Cubs fan.

...not a fan of the slogan BUT

This is the kind of thing that ESPN and mainstream sports media would eat up. Imagine Joe Morgan looking at the sign and trying to explain what it means. Joe: Well John, I like the sign. You know it’s been 20 years since the Cubs last won a World Series, F is the 6th letter in the alphabet, add an 8 to that and you get 2068. Ernie Banks once hit 2068 homeruns in a single season, and all of them landed in the left field basket. I saw every single one of them with my own eyes. John: Caaaarlos MarMOL
