Minor League Wrap--July 14
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs lost to the Albuquerque Isotopes, 14-8.
Jeff Samardzija got the start and for the most part the Shark pitched well, considering this is Albuquerque. Samardzija allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. He walked four, which is bad, but he struck out nine, which is very impressive. In five starts in AAA, Samardzija is now striking out a batter an inning, which he had never come close to anytime in his minor league career before.
Samardzija also doubled in a 1 for 3 effort.
Jeff Samardzija makes my head hurt.
Randy Wells, however, wasn't impressive. Wells failed to retire a batter in the seventh inning, although two Casey McGehee errors contributed to that. When Wells left the game, he had allowed five hits which would eventually lead to seven runs, although only three of the runs counted as earned.
Carmen Pignatiello finished out the seventh inning for Wells and allowed two inherited runners to score and two of his own before the nine-run seventh inning ended. Hector Carrasco then allowed three more runs in the eighth.
Center fielder Andres Torres was 2 for 5 with a double and a home run. Torres had four RBI on the day. Second baseman Bobby Scales was 2 for 4 and scored twice. First baseman Matt Craig was 2 for 4 with a walk.
Right fielder Josh Kroeger hit his 12th home run in a 1 for 5 effort.
Tennessee Smokies
The North All-Stars defeated the South All-Stars, 6-1.
Smokies right fielder Doug Deeds was 1 for 4 with a solo home run.
Daytona Cubs
The D-Cubs clipped the Clearwater Threshers, 3-2.
Marcos Mateo started and got the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and two walks.
Blake Parker got his third save with a scoreless ninth.
Third baseman Marquez Smith was 1 for 3 with a double and a walk. Smith scored once and knocked one run in.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs were cooled off by the West Michigan Whitecaps, 10-2.
Starter Kevin Kreier pitched five innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks. One of the runs was unearned. Kreier struck out one.
Chris Siegfried allowed five runs in two innings of relief. One of the runs was unearned.
Shortstop Nate Samson was 2 for 4 with two doubles. Samson scored twice.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks cleaned up on the Tri-City Dust Devils, 8-5.
Starter Josh Whitlock allowed four runs on four hits in four innings. He also walked two and struck out three.
Jeffrey Beliveau got the win in relief. Beliveau pitched three innings and allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three.
Tommy Meija got the save with two shutout innings. He allowed three hits while striking out two and walking no one.
Second baseman Josh Harrison was 3 for 5 with two doubles and a stolen base. Harrison scored twice and had an RBI. His double-play partner, second baseman Marwin Gonzalez was 3 for 4 with two stolen bases. Gonzalez scored twice and knocked one in.
Cubs announcer Bob Brenly had announced plans to spend the All-Star Break in the fair capital of the state of Idaho. Assuming he did, he got to see Hawks catcher Michael Brenly go 2 for 4 and score two runs.

Assuming Samardzija keeps this up...
... he’ll be up in September. Or maybe even before that.

I'm assuming you mean as a reliever -
I don’t see where he’ll fit in the ‘pen before September if everyone avoids the DL, although trades could clear some inventory. Nice to see that option as realistic, though. Samardzija has come a long way.

Yes, as a reliever.
Either before or after September 1, that’s the only fit on this team.

Shark
I remember talk about him working on pitches when he was beginning his climb through the system. They seemed to be working on his changeup and maybe some other secondary pitch. This could be why the results are against logic (continually posting better numbers at higher levels).
Does anyone know if they are giving him more free reign to throw his fastball or is he just getting better with those secondary pitches?

I have a feeling it's probably both.

I agree
But he was also working on giving his fastball some movement, so that’s probably paying off now too.

Whatever it is
appears to have something to do with the interesting results following a promotion. Maybe its wishful thinking, but possibly his so-so results coming up have stemmed from working on pitches.
Now that he is using his entire arsenal, we might be seeing what he really has to offer. I dont remember any 9k performances before last night. If he can do that consistently, and Josh you would know better, his prospect status would go up tremendously.

Samardzija
The Cubs have always said Samardzija was “working on pitches” when his results were terrible. It’s just that we didn’t believe them—or that honestly, all minor league pitchers are “working on pitches.”
The minor league mavens on the net had talked to scouts who weren’t working for the Cubs: some liked him, but many seemed to think he just didn’t have very good stuff beyond his fastball. A few said things along the lines up “He just doesn’t add up” meaning his stuff was a lot better than his results.
It’s still only 31 innings. But nothing Samardzija does surprises me anymore.

Why do you say that?
Samardzija is being groomed as a starting pitcher. To date his developmental curve has been up and down. He might get invite to sit at the end of a long bench in September but I don’t see the Cubs counting on his contributions. He needs to keep working and plugging away. Hopefully he is in good position to help the ballclub mid-season of next year or by 2010.

Because Lou believes, as did Earl Weaver...
...that “The best place for a young starter is in long relief.” He did it with Gallagher, Marshall and Hart at various points.

I understand (and agree with) that
But I still dont’ see the Cubs turning to Jeff Sarmdzija to play a role in 2008.

Where has Vitters been?
I might not have read the recap that day, but I haven’t seen him the last few days. Did he get called up or hurt? Thanks for the doing these Josh, I love following the minor leagues and you make it easier to do it day to day.

I heard he's supposed to be called up to Peoria before the 7/29 game at Wrigley Field.
Incidentally, that game has now sold about 25,000 tickets—they’re hoping for 30,000.

Great to Hear That
I love hearing about great attendance for a minor league game in a huge city like Chicago. With all the things there are to do in Chicago, it’s nice to know so many people find it worth their while to go to a class A game. I’ve never been to a class A game. Maybe, some people who can’t afford to go a Cubs game at Wrigley can afford to go to this one. I hope this becomes an annual event.

He's still in Boise
He went 1 for 4 with a double last night. Josh usually only mentions noteable performances from games, and 1 for 4 doesn’t usually count as noteable.

I did
because he had a long hitting streak so I was mentioning him extending the streak. He’s had a lot of 1 for 4 with a double in the past week, which I decided didn’t need to get mentioned.

Far as I know
it was a day game after a night game. Seems like the most likely explanation.
