Player Report Cards for the Cubs
Hey all - not sure if anyone has seen this yet, but "ESPN Inside-Edge" (whatever that is) is giving all players from all teams midway report cards based on personal statistics in various situations vs. how the average MLB player performs in these situations. Kinda interesting, as it provides tangible stats for comments like "A-ram is clutch!" and "Soriano chases too many pitches." So check it out, although bare in mind that this database of statistics also shows how insignificant certain stats can sometimes be when compared against sheer production. Enjoy!

Very fun to look at
They appear to be fairly accurate as well.

Nevermind
Why is DeRosa higher than Soriano and Ramirez?

I think that's the value
of a 2B over a 3B or LF

DeRosa and Ramirez are both B's overall.
Soriano’s high strikeouts, due to lack of plate discipline and poor 2 strike performance, knock him down to a C+.

They also have scouting reports
Some nice depictions of hot zones, spray charts, pitch types/locations, etc… interesting stuff.

Theriot
Nobody really argues that Theriot’s PAs are bad. They argue that he has ZERO power, which this report solidifies. He’s a good singles hitter who gets on base. Everybody concedes that. Let’s hope they don’t do a report on his defense.

Defense really is an interesting thing. As is baserunning. Did the report mention anything about his SLG?

yes i did
do you just see “Theriot” and stop reading what people write. I said everything EXCEPT SLG is above league average, but yes I am sorry I brought up the subject, we all know how we all stand

I agree that he has good OBP. I just think everything else is horrible.
But you’re right, we already know how we feel. Moving on…

Again, not really how I read it.
Besides the lack of slugging, he is also below average in well hit balls (.219 vs league average of .234). He is high in putting the ball in play. So what you have is a hitter who puts weakly hit balls into play a lot. What has saved him this year is he has had great plate discipline, which is fairly new. Unfortunately he has been taking fewer and fewer walks every month. I’m not sure if this is lack of patience, or scouting reports that instruct pitchers to throw BP fastballs, because he is no threat to hit a ball hard.

Lots of C's on Fukudome
I hope the first couple months of the season weren’t an abberation for this guy…we’ve got him for 3 more years…or is it 4?

3 after this. Although with his good defense and baserunning, I think he'll be the least
of our long contract headaches at that point.

I'm sure you're not calling
8 years-$126 Mil. a contract headache are you?

Not the way I read it.
He has a high ranking in quality at bats, clutch stats, 2 strike performance.and plate discipline.

Balls put in play
I do not agree with the idea that the % of balls put in play is a good measure. Whats wrong with fouling off a few?

These take FOREVER to load.

We're all looking at BCB and it does not take anywhere near this long.

Highest rated pitcher, Kerry Wood, Neal Cotts (!), and John Lieber (!!!)
Lieber does not have a single grade lower than a B- in any catagory or subcatagory.
Marshall grades out as high as Z or Demps or Marmol or Lilly (!).
