Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Minor League Wrap--July 17

Iowa Cubs

Hey, Pat Listach!  You just managed the PCL All-Stars to victory in the AAA All-Star Game!  What are you going to do next?

"I'm going to Adventureland USA!"

And yes, the PCL gets home field advantage in the AAA Playoff Game (aka the "Bricktown Showdown") after the season is over.  Of course, the game gets played on a neutral site, so all they get is to bat last.

Tennesee Smokies

The Smokies were doused by the Huntsville Stars, 9-3.

Starter Grant Johnson got beaten up for eight runs in only four innings.  Johnson allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out one.  Two of the runs charged to Johnson were unearned.

Right fielder Doug Deeds was 3 for 4 with a double.  Catcher Wellington Castillo was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

Daytona Cubs

Stayed home and played poker because it rained.

Peoria Chiefs

The Chiefs lost to the Lansing Lugnuts, 8-7.

Audy Santana started and took the loss.  Santana allowed five runs (one unearned) on seven hits in four innings.  He walked no one and struck out three.

Jake Muyco threw two shutout innings of relief.  He allowed two hits.  He struck out two and walked no one.

Shortstop Nate Samson is on a roll this month.  Samson was 3 for 5 tonight with a stolen base and a run scored.  Samson is batting .390 for the month of July.

Left fielder Elvis Lara was 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

First baseman Rebel Ridling was 1 for 4 with a walk and three RBI.

Boise Hawks

The Hawks beat the Tri-City Dust Devils, 6-4.

Mike Perconte started and allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in three innings of work.  Perconte struck out one.

James Leverton got the win by pitching three innings of relief without giving up a hit.  That would sound more impressive if I didn't mention that he allowed a run because he walked four Dust Devils.  Leverton struck out two.

Tommy Meija picked up his second save with a scoreless ninth.

Third baseman Josh Vitters was 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored.

Right fielder Drew Rundle was 2 for 3 with a triple and a walk.  Rundle scored twice, batted one in and stole a base.

AZL Cubs

Aided by seven Padres errors, the AZL Cubs bombed the AZL Padres, 20-8.

The Cubs had 20 hits in this game.  They scored ten runs in the fourth inning.

Last year's Bricktown champion .... SACRAMENTO!

"It’s like they have 40,000 players on one team. Forty thousand people want to be in the dugout slapping fives. ‘Passionate’ is an understatement." -- Giants LHP Alex Hinshaw on Wrigley Field

So what are the chances that Muyco

Can pull a mini-Carlos Marmol, and make the transition from positional player to effective reliever at a sort of advanced age?

Long

but the odds are long for most pitchers in Low A making the majors.

But I like what I see so far. He’s got a chance. And . . .he’s got Jeff Samardzija’s glove. Might be some magic in that.

Too bad he doesn't play SS

He’d be here Sep ‘09.

I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

If only for posterity's sake...

...I’d like to point out that, as of right now, the Peoria Chiefs have a guy named Elvis playing left field and a guy named Rebel playing first base. In terms of pure name coolness, this accomplishment simply cannot be surpassed.

I dunno

The AZL Cubs have a guy named Jericho playing left field and an infielder named Starlin.

But I’ve always said, I expect Jericho Jones to team up with Rocky Roquet when the season is over and clean up Dodge City and have a showdown with the cattle rustlers.
