BCB Contest!
While we wait for the second half of the season to begin tonight, I thought I'd offer this to you -- a chance to win a prize, and a way to express how you feel the second half is going to go.
The prize is a $50 gift card from Distant Replays, which is located in suburban Atlanta and specializes in retro sports clothing from many different sports.
The contest is very simple. Post your pick for how many wins the Cubs will have at the end of the 2008 regular season. Obviously, many people will have the same number. So for a tiebreaker, let's go with a stat from the player who has probably generated the most comments on this site this year -- Ryan Theriot. Tiebreaker: what will Theriot's final batting average be? And just in case two people have the same pick for both Cub wins and Theriot BA, we'll have a second tiebreaker -- Theriot's OBP.
Have at it, good luck, and at last, there will be a pregame thread up late this afternoon.

My guesses
Cubs Wins: 96
Theriot’s BA: .304
Theriot’s OBP: .386
I must say...
...for all the Theriot hate routinely thrown around these parts, I’m seeing a remarkable amount of optimism regarding his numbers.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
I think these numbers are very subtly pessimistic.
But I’d have to actually average up the BA from all the posts to be certain.
Back-of-the-envelope...
...I took the average of the first ten respondents, and that came up to a .294 batting average. Presuming that Theriot ends up with 650 at-bats the rest of the season (and he’s on pace for around 300 more ABs this season, so that’s about right) he would have to bat .264 the rest of the way to bat .294 on the season.
These surveys tend to stabilize pretty quickly, so I’d say .294 is probably representative of the responses we’re seeing. BCB isn’t optimistic about Ryan Theriot as a group; BCB is expecting Ryan Theriot to fall off like a rock the rest of the year.
Now for OBP.
Average of the first 10 respondents is .372. Theriot has 392 PAs so far this season, on pace for 730. 154 times on base, so his current OBP is .393. That works out to a .348 OBP to finish the season. Assuming his career ISO SLG rate of .084 the rest of the way – generous, I think, given that his ISO this season is .049), that leaves Theriot with a projected line of:
.254/.348/.348, OPS of .696, OPS+ of 80.
That’s the opposite of optimism.
To be clear...
...that line is for rest-of-year only. As a group, our first ten forecasters are projecting Theriot to:
.294/.372/.378, .750 OPS, 94 OPS+
As an end-of-season total, again using Theriot’s career ISO. Using Theriot’s season to date ISO:
.294/.372/.343, .715 OPS, 86 OPS+
I’d probably split the difference between them, myself. Either way, I wouldn’t call it particularly optimistic.

Seems to be two distinct camps 91-94 wins and 97-100 wins
67 games remaining:
93 wins =36-31 record (with Soriano and Harden on the club) .537%
99 wins =42-25 record or .627%
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
Fun with numbers...My rationale
is that the Cubs need to play .600 ball. Period. You win 3 out of every five and you go to the playoffs.
160 games at a .600 winning percentage is 96-64. I let them split the last two games. so they go 97-65 for a .5987654320 winning percentage or .599 rounded up or .600 really rounded up.
