Joe Buck doesn't like baseball

Joe Buck interview with Cowherd

He crams before games. He would rather watch "The Bachelorette" instead of a weekday game.

This is the voice of the World Series. This is the voice that 10-year-olds (when they can stay up) listen to calling the game. And he no longer has interest in the game.

Our fathers had Harry Caray and Jack Brickhouse and Ernie Harwell and Jack Buck. Our kids have this twerp.

Cardinal fan friends of mine say they actually can't stand it when Joe Buck comes back to FSMW to do Cards game. They say it sounds like he think he's slumming.

It's time for the Commissioner to start Commissioning and tell Fox that it is no longer acceptable to have Joe Buck and if they don't like it, NBC or CBS or ABC would be more than happy to get the World Series.

If Joe Buck's name was Joe Blake, he wouldn't be able to get a job calling the Peoria Chiefs. And he has the gall to disrespect the sport that made him famous, and put food in his mouth.

To hell with him. It's time for new blood in the booth.

Meh.

Joe Buck is an asshat. This isn’t earth-shattering news. It’s not even news. This hasn’t changed my opinion of him one bit. He is the lesser son of a greater sire.

"I've always felt that starting pitching is the most important part of the rotation." - Joe Morgan, Sunday Night Baseball 8-12-07

Context

Joe Buck is a bit too self-conscious as an announcer and not great at play by play in baseball. This makes him sound pompous and uninterested sometimes. Jack was amazing. Joe 100% has a job because of the name.

All that said, some of the reactions to this post are coming out of context of the interview. The tone of the interview is “why don’t people watch more sports” and Joe is answering as to the pressures of his life. Yes, he admitted to looking forward to football. But, his big point was that it’s easier to get excited about a football game because they’re once a week, short season, and every game matters. Baseball lacks that advantage.

I don’t like his call at all, but be fair. He was answering questions in a semi-casual setting. Not being grilled as to his hopes and dreams.

Cowherd

You obviously haven’t heard the Cowherd radio show alot. He constantly harps on about how dull every sport is other than football.

I think if Buck would have said he would love to be able to keep up with weekday baseball but just didn’t have the time that would be ok. What he said was that just in general the interest isn’t there anymore.

The nicest thing I can say about Joe Buck

is that at least he’s not Joe Morgan.

Nice screen name...

one of my more favorite tastes.

As far as this post goes…DaBard, why are you so angry? I always thought I was angry but you’re good man.

Oh and Joe Buck is…whatever. Go Cubs!

Calm down.

The Buck Name Helps, But..

I think Joe Buck is a fine announcer in his own right as long as he doesn’t try to sing. Is he his father, Jack Buck? No, but that’s hardly something of which to be ashamed. I think he has plenty enough interest in baseball. He may not be as interested as he used to be. He does other things like football for Fox. I think he should stay on the Fox baseball telecasts.

As if anybody cares, there was a guy named Tom Stocker, who was a great announcer for the AA Memphis Chicks and later the AAA Memphis Redbirds. He never got a shot to announce for a major league team. If his name had been Buck or Caray, he would have gotten an opportunity.

Disrespect the sport that made him famous?

Hardly. Oh, he does disrespect the game with his comments mentioned above. However, MLB made his father, the immortal Jack Buck famous. Joe has never been anything but Jack’s son, who tried to follow in his footsteps. I’m with gary, Buck is an asshat, and I think his dad would say the same today, if he was still around.

Maybe he needs some time off.

To get away from sports for a while to reinvigorate his love for them.

And, no if he was not the son of Jack Buck he probably wouldn’t have all his success.

I use to hate Joe Buck....

and I still consider him a pompous a#$hole. However, I have to give him credit…The football broadcast he does with Troy Aikman is the best in NFL. When it comes to baseball he is not good. It always sounds like we as fans should be lucky to hear his voice. The Cardinals allegiance doesnt help.

by smitster2008 on Jul 2, 2008 3:46 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Disagree

I respectfully disagree. I find Buck just as bad in his work on the NFL. He knows even less about football than he does about baseball…and that is saying something.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

His call of the great catch in this past super bowl sounded like he was calling a preseason game.

I think ESPN should be doing something about Cowherd just as much as Fox should about Buck.

Both should be reassigned if they really think like this. It is both of their jobs to watch sports every night so that they can speak knowledgably about them on a daily basis. Insulting to me as a sports fan that this crap can happen.

by nji232 on Jul 2, 2008 3:56 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No.

It is not Colin Cowherd’s job to watch sports every night. He is not an analyst. It is, however, Colin Cowherd’s job to give his opinion, whether they’re his actualy opinions, or made up for the benefit of ratings. An OVERWHELMING percentage of his listeners are mainly football fans, and by him constantly giving props to football, and bashing baseball, he keeps his biggest fanbase coming back. ESPN cannot, and will not do a thing to Colin, nor should they. If people don’t agree with what he says, turn the station. I have listened to him everyday for two years, and absolutley hate it when he bashes baseball, but once the ratings are told, its simple that the interest level just isn’t there. It is kind of a cheap way to get ratings, but nonetheless it works. I do agree, that if he is going to speak of baseball, he should be better informed. This is the same guy who said last year “Jeff Francis is one of the FIVE LEGIT aces in baseball.” We all know how wrong that statement it. I think that Colin’s show is about 1/2 the time hilarious and polarizing, and 1/2 beating the dead horse. However it is not his job to know everything about sports; its his job to be relevant and polarizing. And obviously since we’re hashing this over, his show is being relevant.

Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

He's said as much before

He’s said that he prefers football to baseball many times.

On the other hand, I’m sure he likes baseball better than Howard Cosell did in the 1970s and he broadcast the World Series too. So this is really nothing new and nothing to get too up in arms about.

I dont understand

Why the hell does baseball and Fox allow this to happen. Fox is garbage with EVERYTHING, one-sided pompess asses that only care about money, more money and more money. With Joe Buck they don’t have to worry about any slip ups and his voice is good in the booth, so for them it is “To Hell with the fact he doesnt like baseball”. Its absolute garbage if you are a baseball announcer that does not care about baseball. Just another reason to hate Fox and another reason to hate the Cardinals.

I used to not have an opinion about Buck.

Thought he was OK, neither good nor bad.

But someone with this attitude should NOT be the primary voice of the game on a national network. Period.

The Buck Stops Here

Eh? Joe Buck doesn’t like baseball? Well, maybe baseball doesn’t like Joe Buck. Ever thought of that?

Baseball does need to make sure that whoever it has, managing, coaching, announcing, etc…That they truly love this game. Baseball is something special that lives in the heart of many fans. There are too many people who would love to be out there doing the jobs of those who hate it. Stop killing the magic, and just let it shine!

Cowherd and Buck

Cowherd has been trashing every sport but football for a long time and now Buck has joined him. Definitely if I was Bud Selig I would do something about it and get a baseball fan in the booth. Let Cowherd and Buck have their 24/7/365 love affair with football, let someone who cares about baseball announce baseball games.

by jeff_pico on Jul 2, 2008 5:23 PM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cowherd isn't

The national voice of baseball for the network that carries the World Series and the All-Star Game.

Cowherd isn’t the son of one of the greatest broadcasters ever to call the game.

Cowherd is a whiff of flatulence in a typhoon.

Buck has the power to truly influence how people feel about the game. And he is a disgrace.

The combination

of Buck and Tim McCarver makes me want to puke. Moreso McCarver, who talks to the view like they’re in kindergarten. He’s such a smarmy dick, I was glad when Deion Sanders not once, but twice dumped buckets of water on him during the 1993 playoffs.

Joe Buck

I lost all respect for him when he went on the way he did about Randy Moss and his “fake” mooning in that Green Bay playoff game a couple years ago. You would have thought Moss just shot somebody in the crowd the way he went on.
Even if he would’ve have really mooned the crowd, that wouldn’t have warranted Buck’s reaction. The guys a poser.

I remember Buck saying somthing like “He’s trying to moon the fans” or something along those lines. Then he kept going on and on and on about it. I wanted to punch him in the face. I still might if I ever meet him.

Joe Buck is awful and to make matters worse

he has to engage in what can only be described as painful banter with his doddering, indecipherable sidekick, Tim McCarver. Between McCarver’s inane “observations” about the game, and Buck’s smarmy flippancy, I really get the sense that I’m watching something else…this is not the game I grew up with! This is some bizarro NFL game with bats and smaller helmets.

CaliCub Doesn't Like Cowherd

I call him a “connect the dots” sports host because there is not one shred of originality in what he does. He’s even admitted as much – that he’s there only to talk about what’s popular and whatever will net the most listeners so ESPN can have the highest ratings and sell more ads at a higher price.

I also call him “the Atkins Diet of sports hosts” because, like the trendy diet program, listeners will lose interest and seek out the next new fad.

Then there's the Brennamans.

Marty’s rant on the Cubs and their fans was the most unprofessional thing I’ve heard from a sports announcer. Even worse than Harrelson’s hominess.

Buck Backpedals

According to Richard Sandomir in today’s New York Times, Buck now claims that he was just kidding.

On Thursday, Buck said in an interview from his home in St. Louis that he was joking about his TV habits—even if neither the host nor the guest sounded amused. He was too flippant, he said. And so, a little verbal damage control.
