Free agent question
Not really cubbie related...but baseball related.
With the media talking about a-rod not partaking in the home run derby, I was wondering if a free agent could enter the competition?
I don't know if you need to have a contract signed or not...but just wondering.
As well, first time poster...but have been reading for awhile now. Thanks to all those who contribute!

No.
You have to be asked. I doubt any free agent could enter. Anyone in particular you were thinking of?

Alternate Would Fill Slot
If A-Rod or anyone else asked does not participate, an existing player with a contract would be picked as a replacement. Bonds doesn’t have a contract. He won’t be in the All-Star Game HR Derby.

That would make for great theater!
Imagine if they had a Contestant X behind a curtain for the whole derby and then, at the very end, they opened the curtain and let him challenge the apparent winner. Behold, the Evil One!

Classic
I approve. And if MLB doesn’t, maybe toonmike can put it in a cartoon.

I'll pass along this idea.

I don't think an FA can.
I think you have to be in the MLB. Take Willie Randolph for example. He was asked to be a coach then got fired and now Lou is taking his spot. Just my thought.
when asked about his performance against the Reds - Lieber said the following
"Well obviously I made some bad pitches today, left to many over the plate and they got good wood on the ball. The only good thing was that I was able to get back into the clubhouse earlier then I planned so I could eat."

Doesn't MLB...
...have a LEGENDS game that takes place around the All-Star game? For some reason, I keep thinking they do, yet I don’t remember for sure. I don’t believe it’s televised… is it? Hmmmm…. Get some of those old-timers in a all-star home run derby of their own.
Seems like I remember a game like that, where Reggie Jackson still whacked one out. Ah well… I hope somebody knows what I am talking about.

I assume it is televised
but I don’t know when or on what channel. It was mentioned in an email I got as an MLB.TV subscriber, listing the All-Star related content I can watch.

It is Televised
The game is shown after Home Run Derby, on ESPN
It is played before Home Run Derby, but shown afterwards

Yes
In fact, The Hawk, Andre Dawson, played in it last year and hit some bombs.

Ugh! And I missed it! It wouldn’t be online somewhere would it? My heart is aching!

This happened in the NBA...
...when Craig Hodges was allowed to defend his 3-point shooting contest title in 1993 despite being a free agent not on the roster of any team.

The rules are basically "whatever MLB says."
I seriously don’t think Selig would go to all the trouble of colluding against Bonds just to invite him to the All-Star Game.

but imagine...
the storyline. The new steroid free MLB vs. the all time home run leader/possible seroid user!!!

Is this pro wrestling?
Because, well, baseball should be more like pro wrestling.

Thats an interesting question
...I like it.
Before I got the answer, which I knew Id get, I was thinking about lumping this question with the greats like HOW FAR IS SPACE etc…..But honestly-how cool/annoying/interesting/intriquing would it be if Bonds entered it.
