Minor League Wrap--July 19
Lots of rain tonight.
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs were topped by the Nashville Sounds, 4-3 in a game that ended after six innings because of rain.
Justin Berg allowed three runs on three hits and four walks in 5.2 innings. Berg struck out one. Berg left the game with a lead, but Mike Burns pitched the final two-thirds of an inning an allowed one inherited runner to score and one of his own to take the loss. I suspect that rain played a big factor in the inning as Burns allowed only one hit but hit two batsmen. Sounds like he may have had trouble gripping the ball.
First baseman Matt Craig was 1 for 3 with a solo home run.
Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies lost to the Huntsville Stars, 4-2.
It was the same old story with Donnie Veal tonight. He pitched four great innings, but then took the mound in the fifth and got clubbed for three runs and he allowed another one in the sixth. The final line on Veal tonight was six innings pitched with four runs allowed, three of which were earned. Veal was touched for five hits and one walk and struck out three.
Right fielder Doug Deeds was 3 for 4 with two doubles. Deeds scored once.
Catcher Wellington Castillo was 2 for 4.
Daytona Cubs
Daytona was rained out.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs were cooled off by the Great Lakes Loons, 5-1.
Robert Hernandez continues to struggle since his suspension ended. Hernandez allowed five runs on six hits and two walks in five innings. Hernandez struck out four.
Center fielder Jonathan Wyatt was 2 for 4 with a double and a stolen base. Wyatt scored the lone Chief run.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks six-game winning streak came to an end with a 4-3 loss to the Tri-City Dust Devils.
Jeffrey Beliveau started and allowed four runs on three hits and four walks in 1.1 innings. He also hit a batter. Beliveau did strike out three of the four outs he recorded.
The Boise bullpen shut down the Dust Devils the rest of the way. Josh Whitlock threw 3.2 shutout innings, Mark Pawelek threw 1.1 innings and Dan McDaniel threw 1.2 shutout innings.
Right fielder Drew Rundle was 2 for 3 with a double, a home run and a walk. He scored twice and batted two in. DH Josh Harrison was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two stolen bases.
Before anyone asks, Josh Vitters did not play.
AZL Cubs
The Cubs continue to bomb the rookie league, beating the AZL Royals, 12-4.
First baseman and 33rd round pick Sean Hoorelbeke was 4 for 4 with a double and two home runs.
I know the Arizona Summer League is an easy place to hit, but the Cubs' rookie ball team is averaging 8.2 runs a game. The Angels have the second best offense with 6.9 runs a game.

Speaking of the AZL Cubs -- Jericho Jones
continues to rake. He went 2 for 4 today with a homer and 3 RBI. He’s hitting freaking .448.
Castillo should be a September call up.

Really?
Castillo has talent, but bringing him up that far? After playing half a season above A ball? He’s only 21 years old.
Also, he’s not on the 40-man roster, although that’s not usually an issue.

I don't have an issue with it.
For one, I think he’s our future catcher (with Geo moving to first) so the experience of being in a playoff race and going deep into October would be great for him. Not saying he would play, but just being apart of the atmosphere would give him sort of a head start for when he’s gonna be ready.

Yeah.
I would call him up as our third catcher for the month. He’s basically Henry Blanco’s replacement as of right now.
I disagree on the label “catcher of the future”. I don’t think Soto will be moving to first anytime soon. So much can change between now and the time Derrek Lee’s contract expires. Josh Vitters might end up at first; or we might acquire a first baseman. Anyway—it’s way too premature to label Castillo as the catcher of the future, although he is a decent backup at least, IMO.

Agreed
Soto is not likely moving to first anytime soon. Castillo could (should?) end up being his backup next season and if he plays well enough to be a starter . . . well, young starting catchers bring big premiums back in trade.
I think Soto is our catcher for a while.
