It's a beautiful feeling
There are great firsts in a persons life.

First time getting busy
First (and hopefully only) wedding
First baby
But nothing in the world compares to the first time your first on a game or overflow thread!

Is there any statistical significance
in having a sabermagician post first on a team’s blog—does it increase the chances of that team winning?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
Actually
Actually if a sabermatician posts first on his favorite team’s blog 1st overflow post on sundays the week the bears start training camp the team is 12-2.

Boy, that ump loves the low strike call.
Saved our bacon on Backe’s ab, though.

but why take a hot bat..
out of the order.. If he cools off fine try him, but not right now..
"Go Cubs Go"
hot bat
and an empty glove.
It’s arguable, I think, whether his offensive… work (I hesitate to use the word “power” in association with Ryan Theriot) gains us more runs than his glove and/or bad baserunning costs us.
"We expect to win. We go out to win. So we're just living up to our own expectations." Derrek Lee, 5/29/08
by drewishdrewid on Jul 20, 2008 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions
Overall I agree with you..
My point is right now you ahve to keep his bat in the lineup b/c he is getting a base. Right now he is hot and you have to find a way to keep a hot bat in the lineup. If he cools then i’d agree but right now he is swinging a hot bat.
"Go Cubs Go"
you're not listening
the bat does not overcome his baserunning blunders and poor fielding.
At least, that’s my opinion.

by drewishdrewid on Jul 20, 2008 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions
i'm listening clearly..
and i agree that hitting doesn’t make up for all of that. my point was RIGHT NOW he is getting on base quite a bit. A 13 game hit streak would indicate that. that jumps starts runs. and i personally don’t think Cedeno is a better player than Theriot. maybe defensively but after that he makes the same baserunning blunders and he doesn’t hit as much.
"Go Cubs Go"
Riot
has made many more baserunning blunders.
Of course, he gets to play.

You can't bench the Riot

by bluekoolaide on Jul 20, 2008 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions
i believe the point was..
there is no reason not to tho.. at least not right now with the way he is hitting.
"Go Cubs Go"
no reason not to
except for his base-running and his fielding

At some point...
...a player’s fielding has to offset his hitting, right? Otherwise guys like Cliff Floyd would be playing shortstop.
The question is where you draw that line. But it IS a question.
agreed.. my only point is
right now his hitting is very good. you have to keep a hot bat in the lineup. You don’t take him out at this current time bc he is getting on base..
"Go Cubs Go"
Dude, some advice....

Would Riot be at least an average defensive 2B in your opinion?
IMO, DeRo would be at least as good of a SS as Riot. What would happen if you switch the two?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
DeRosa is really past the age where you'd want to be moving him back to shortstop...
...on anything more than an emergency basis. (He’s probably the third-best shortstop defensively on the team right now, not that that says much.)
Agreed that he won't win a GG at SS,
but neither will Theriot. I don’t think that Cedeno has shown Lou enough consistency to get a real chance.
So, what if…
Assume that we are passed the trade deadline.
Assume that Riot sprains his ankle and will miss a month.
Does Lou:
1. Play Ronny every day at SS
2. Platoon Ronny and Fonty with DeRo shifting between SS and 2B
3. Platoon Ronny and Fonty with Fonty playing SS
4. Play DeRo at SS and Fonty at 2B every day
Not great options, but do we have anyone to call up from AA and AAA that would be better?
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
#4
gives you the most power at the plate, but DeRosa at SS… I dunno…

We have absolutely no SS depth in the minors.
Which is why we can’t afford to put Cedeno on waivers, despite what you hear around here from time to time.
