Brewers Get Durham.
Just went to ESPN.com and saw that the Brewers have added Ray Durham to bolster there bench. Not saying this is a huge move but nevertheless they are for sure in it to win it. The article didn't say who was the Brewers player involved with the trade but I"m guessing the Giants are getting some sort of minor leaguer. Anyway just thought I'd throw this out there.

No sure how this really helps the Brewers, Durham is not that impressive
at this stage of his career. You’d think the Brew Crew would be focused on the bulpen

Ah, but Durham is a Cub-killer.
That’s probably their focus. He’ll start at 2B for them, because Rickie Weeks has been brutal.
This isn’t a bad short-term move for them. Durham is .301/.384/.436 in 236 lifetime AB vs. Cubs pitching, above his career averages.

That's what I was going to say...
What in the world has happened to Rickie Weeks? Durham isn’t a world-beater, but he doesn’t have to be very good to help them more than Weeks has.

Hasn't Durham continued this trend against us
so far this year? IIRC correctly he had a couple clutch hits against us at Wrigley.

Durham
is a steady player. And before the season is over, I’ll bet that he wins a game for the Brewers against the Cubs.

Durham is in a contract year...
and is playing like he wants another big payday from someone.
by bison on Jul 20, 2008 6:09 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
He may get it...
... but whoever signs him will regret it, because Durham will be 37 in November, his speed is completely gone, and his power numbers are down this year.

Let's hope those 10M dollars they gave Gagne
make them push him kicking and screaming out onto the field during a relief situation ..
I heard somewhere in urban legend land that the last name Gagne means “ambition” ..

LOL!
Actually, the surname Gagne is an occupational name for a farmer, derived from the French “Gagneau” meaning to till or cultivate.
In other words, he spreads sh*t around, and hopes for something useful. Fitting.

gagne means, “win”

Translated literally
gagner means “to win”, but that is not the etymology of this particular surname.

Brew Crew Did It
only because Durham wears out the Cubs. So let’s hope Hendry and Lou scour Baseball-Reference.com and find out who wears out the Brewers and acquire whoever that player is.

I doubt it
More relevant would be his record against Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, etc. than his performance against the team. As someone mentioned a few days ago in reference to another player, in this era of frequent player movement, it doesn’t mean much.

Not exactly.
His career against the Cubs is just that—but he’s been in the league for a while. I’ll check and get back to ya if I can find his stats against the individuals (with minimal effort!).

Ray Durham can still hit
Not a bad move by the Brewers. They plan on converting Rickie Weeks to center field next season, or so the story goes.

Are they going to convert him into a hitter, too?
I don’t understand why they don’t give Gwynn a shot.

Weeks is immensely talented
He’s got very quick hands and ability to be a great hitter in this league. Shades of Gary Sheffield, albeit without nearly the same power. But Weeks hasn’t come close to realizing his potential. He’s a bad 2nd baseman and Doug Melvin has openly ruminated that it might be in the best interest to move Weeks to centerfield next year. Melvin has brought up the name BJ Upton in this regard.

Interesting
Until he gets better command of the strike zone, I don’t know. Not disputing that the talent is there, mind you.

btw, what about Gwynn?
I didn’t understand why they signed Cameron instead of letting Tony, Jr. play.

For whatever reason they haven't been willing to give Gwynn extended opportunity
I don’t know enough about Gwynn Jr. to comment beyond that.

Law on Durham signing FWIW...emphasis mine
Durham could be ‘useful’ to BrewersSunday, July 20, 2008 | Feedback | Print Entry
Ray Durham has bounced back from an atrocious 2007 to “useful” status in 2008, getting on base well without showing the fluky power he had in 2006. He’s a high-contact hitter with a short swing geared to maximize plate coverage, and as a switch-hitter without a pronounced platoon split, he can pinch hit in any situation. (His big platoon split this year, crushing righties while doing nothing against lefties, is a mirror image of his 2006 split. His career splits are almost identical from both sides).
In the field, however, Durham’s a statue, one of the worst defensive second basemen in baseball—worse than Rickie Weeks, who has range Durham hasn’t seen in years but is too erratic to be average. Durham’s best asset is his hands, which are steady and soft, while Weeks’ hands are often his undoing in the field.
"When I got to Chicago, fans came to Wrigley Field just to have fun, now they come to see us win. The expectations have changed, for the players and for the fans. It’s about winning." Kerry Wood, 7/14/08

So Durham's
.293 AVG is decent, but what about .414 SLG and 32 RBI in 87 games??? Not to mention his awful defensive range. What’s all the hubub? They can get that from almost any 2B in the league.
