Maybe, Baby

Kerry Wood's blister is sending him to the DL -- maybe. (This could bring Scott Eyre back to the active roster, and Wood would be eligible to return next Sunday.)

Alfonso Soriano's playing in an AZL game today (game time: noon CDT) and could return to the active roster tonight -- maybe. (Lou gives it a 25% chance of happening.)

A couple of interesting notes from Gordon Wittenmyer:

• • Carlos Zambrano's home run Saturday was the fourth of his career at Minute Maid Park, more than any other pitcher -- including Astros -- at the ballpark.

• • Shortstop Ryan Theriot's three-hit day extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games, during which he's batting .439 (25-for-57).

Finally, a big thank you to BCB reader Louie, who is responsible for the design of the BCB T-shirt now on sale at strangecargo.com (shameless plug, but remember $8 from every shirt sale goes to Derrek Lee's Project 3000). Louie has designed some BCB-themed wallpapers that you can download and use free of charge, and has set up this Flickr account to make that easy. Thanks, Louie -- and everyone enjoy.

It’s a blister and the DL stint is retroactive to the 12th. He’ll be back before you know it…. I’m thinking if Fonzie does well this morning, he’ll be back tonight at Chase Field. For the club even to talk about tonight, that means he’s got no pain.

Not so much worried about Sori's hitting

cause I know he’ll do fine with the bat. I just hope he plays a few minor league games so he can easily judge routine fly balls this time around. The Iowa Cubs are in Tucson for 4 days. That’s pretty convenient… Let him play some outfield there and bring him up Wednesday.

Al, it took me one minute to find a borderline call that went Backe's way.

That’s it. 1 minute. In fact, it was the very first batter he faced after doing something in which you said he’d never ever ever get a borderline call in his favor. It was the 5th pitch after doing something in which you said would have a lasting impact on the rest of Backe’s career. 1 minute. Had you taken 1 minute you too could have seen this and it would have saved you from making a completely and totally erroneous comment and then trying to pass it on to me to prove it’s incorrect.

Even thought it was not in any way my responsibility to prove incorrect something you have not proven, I did anyway. Because it took all of one minute. And had “you watched the game” you’d know these things happen. I mean, for crying out loud, Al, the guy didn’t even get ejected and you were thinking this was going to have a lasting impact? Yeah, it lasted so long as to not have any impact as I said.

Here’s the Gameday image of Aramis Ramirez’s at-bat leading off the 6th inning, which was the first batter he faced after his tantrum. Before you say Gameday isn’t accurate you should know that it is accurate to within one-third of a baseball.

by Madison Cub Fan on Jul 21, 2008 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

He had the nerve to tell me to prove it, so I did.

And here’s more evidence. The batter after Ramirez, Jim Edmonds, with another borderline strike call. It was on the corner, but you’d think if an umpire was holding a grudge, this is one he could easily call a ball. So the first 2 strike calls in the very next inning were borderlilne. The first was even out of the zone.

More a Matter of Curiosity

than anything else. Just how does Gameday work. Without sensors between the mound and the plate I’m guessing it must pick up its data from some kind of scanning device. Is it at all like the systems used by the networks to show the accuracy of an umpire’s call which appears to use a computer program that draws data from the cameras? If it is as you say it is, I am very impressed by the technology, not the argument.

And so it goes.

I'm making myself look silly?

I suppose that’s easy to do around here since everyone follows you around and believes every word you say, but why don’t you be a man and admit you were wrong? You made an incorrect statement. I challenged it. You had the nerve to act like a 3-year old and say “if I watch the games I’d know this” and now that it’s been proven you can’t even admit you made an incorrect and just plain stupid comment? And then followed it up with more stupid ones?

No, this isn’t personal. This has to do with you writing something that was false and then having the nerve to call out someone who pointed it out to you. If this does anything other than make you look ridiculous, then you need to evaluate the people you’ve surrounded yourself with here.

by Maddog on Jul 21, 2008 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

You know, it's one thing to make a point

Wow...

You’ve drug this over to another post from another? Let it go. No one wants to read this whole thread to figure out what you are trying to prove. I’m guessing from a cursory reading that it has to do with Backe’s showing up the ump yesterday. Brenly was right, and so was Al, even if your proof doesn’t show it. Showing up an ump doesn’t exactly endear an opposing pitcher to a home plate ump. Common sense. Backe felt he was squeezed the rest of the game, and he probably was.

by Damen Jackson on Jul 21, 2008 4:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure why this is in this particular thread...

but I do agree with you. Umpires are pretty good about letting these tantrums go. I remember the pitch to Ramirez that you reference in this example. Ramirez bent over and laughed at the called strike three for a second or two before walking back to the dugout. The pitch probably could have gone either way (I would have called it a strike), but shows that the ump in that game had moved on.

However, I think too big a deal is being made of this discussion if it is carrying over into a second diary. Al was going a bit overboard in his hyperbole in asking “what umpire is ever going to give Backe a close call from now on,” but you are going a bit overboard in your response.

But if you like Scotch as much as I do, you’ll want to continue to try new brands as you go. I keep a Chivas or a JW in the office, along with one Glen- Fiddich, Livet or Morange. For special occasions, I’ll spend for a good 25 yr. MaCallan single malt. Enjoy!

My boss & I are best friends for 20 yrs. next year, former college roommates. We are in sales & have just had two million dollar months in a row. As long as we get the work done, we have a lot of autonomy. We’re almost at another million for the third month, so things are going smoothly. Not a stuffy office, just us two, I listen to sports radio all day, and do what I want. It’s nice.

Ticket question

I know there has been several Fanposts on this topic already, but I wanted to ask some you all some questions about buying tickets.

I have a work trip to Chicago coming up next week and was planning on catching the Saturday game vs. the Pirates. I was hoping to buy a single bleacher ticket. Stubhub has them around $100 and Craigslist isn’t much better. Should I just try to find something cheap on one of these sites or is there another route? I tried the ticket exchange here, but no offers so far.

How about day-of ticket releases? Its a 12:05 start, when would go on sale and when would I have to get in line? Should I just try and buy one off a scalper before hand? I realize I could wait until after the game starts, but I would like to get in early if possible. Any other advice?

by Dome is my home-ay on Jul 21, 2008 1:37 PM CDT reply actions

Day of Game tickets

are now sold starting a few hours before the game, and you have to enter the stadium directly. It may be the best way, cash-wise.

I got two bleacher seats for the homegame last sunday for about a 35% markup, on Craigslist. Not terrible, not great either.

I'm willing to pay

anywhere around $70, which I have done in the past. The $120 prices on Craigslist seemed a bit jawdropping. Will prices dip on Craigslist in the next week?

For day of game tickets, how early do I need to show up? Thanks.

by Dome is my home-ay on Jul 21, 2008 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I think they sell

Day of Game 1 hour before the gates open. You have to wait in the little corral. This is a brand-new policy; Doggie Stalker wrote a fan-post about it maybe two weeks ago.

I paid $130 for two tickets. Go into each craigs-list post, sometimes the headlines for the adverts are misleading.

Also, you can try the BCB ticket-exchange, links to which are on the right-hand-bar down the page, and are face-value only, per Al.

The day of game sale...

... at the ticket window now is a MUCH better deal, because requiring you to go in after purchase keeps the scalpers away. Several people here got good tix an hour to game time.

think his legs will look more rested or recovered?

Not necessarily pointless...

if the only point was to test his hand against live pitching, then getting three AB could show whether or not he could do it.

They didn't want to send him on a rehab assignment,

and Fonzie didn’t really want to go either. With the good batting practice and field work on Sat. & Sun.; apparently he and the team must feel he’s ready to go. Why put him at AAA? He’ll get his stroke by being in the ML line-up. A guy like Fonzie, it shouldn’t take long.

Not official yet...

just strong speculation, based on the fact that he was pulled from the rehab game after only three AB in the 6th…

by SouthernCub on Jul 21, 2008 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions

They probably pulled him because of this per trib:

The Cubs are almost as concerned about Soriano’s legs in the extreme heat as they are about his healed left hand. They don’t want him overdoing it Monday morning in a rookie league game against San Diego and possibly pulling a hamstring.

I think if you put the hints together it makes sense.

Lou hints at it last night, Soriano obviously doesn’t want to rehab, the team could use a lift, Soriano leaves the rehab game early.

Missouri Tigers 2008 Cotton Bowl Champs

by nji232 on Jul 21, 2008 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Wouldn't read too much into it... Again Per Trib:

Soriano will get three or four at-bats in the morning. He said he was somewhat concerned about the pitchers he’d be facing.

“I have to be careful because I’m facing rookies with no experience, and I know they’re going to be throwing as hard as they can to get it by me,” he said.

I think it means exactly what Drewish said

Doesn’t want to get plunked by some guy who’s all amped up, trying to throw as hard as he can and looses his control of the strike zone in the process.

If he doesn't want to face the young pitchers that means he doesn't want to be there.

I’m not faulting him at all for being afraid of some young kid going Ankiel all over the place. I’m saying that quote clearly states that he doesn’t want to face rookie league pitchers, thus doesn’t want to be in a rookie league game.

I would rather him

Cut his teeth against a weak hitting DBack club than a power hitting Marlins Club. You can afford for him to be less than stellar but get some real game experience with better pitchers that should prep him for the next series and most importantly the brewers series.

Really is one game at AAA going to make that much of difference. I would prefer him to have a week of rehab but they are not going to do that anyway.
