What are the top ten things to do at Wrigley Field
I am going to the August 5th game against the Astros (more than likely the only game of the season). I love Wrigley Field, and I was wondering what the top ten things to do at Wrigley Field are. Obviously, I am going to see the Ernie Banks statue. I also love to take pictures. What are some good things to take pictures of? Obviosuly, the marquee, field, etc. But some of you may have lesser know things that are part of Wrigley's history.
By the way, tonight's Brewers/Cards game is on ESPN (6 CDT)

This is what gives Cub fans a bad name.
Number one thing to do at Wrigley Field:
Actually watch the game.

That's a bit harsh
It’s a legitimate question, especially for someone who doesn’t get to many games.
Yes, the game is the important thing, but I doubt the poster will be arriving at 7:05 exactly. Nothing wrong with making the most of the visit.
by Shanghai Badger on Jul 21, 2008 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions
Exactly.
I believe it’s a 1:20 start. I would:
Get outside the park by 11:30am, check out the Banks statue, take photos. Wander down to the Marquee and take pictures.
Head over to the RF entrance. Get a photo of the children next to the brick with their names on it over by the Harry statue.
Go in about 12. Buy lunch and occupy our chosen seats in the bleachers. Catch a BP home run (if lucky) and use the time before the game to soak in the wonders of the stadium.
After BP, wander around and check out the view from various angles, where allowed.
Watch the game.
PC load letter!?!? - What the f*** does that mean!?!?!
Nice summary
I hope the poster isn’t planning on showing at 7:05 for a 1:20 game (whoops).
I’d even suggest trying to arrive a bit earlier and wander the neighborhood a bit. Prices outside the park for souveniers are much better than inside. Good places to shop are the stores on the SW corner of Addison and Sheffield and the SE corner of Clark and Addison.

Bleachers...
If you are actually sitting in the Bleachers I would suggest getting in line approximately an hour before the gates open for a weekday game. That would be 10:20. Show up around that time…make a friend with whomever is in line in front and behind you and they will hold your spot.
Then walk around the park and do the aforementioned.

Understand the context of his question before you post negatively
He’s asking what he could do in addition to going to the game.
After the game, I’d recommend going to the Cubby Bear for a couple post-game brews. Pretty good atmosphere and genuinely knowledgeable Cubs fans—at least from my times being there. Try to get there early, too, to see BP.
Maybe a little heads-up: As with all ball parks, the cost of food at Wrigley Field is pretty high. When I go to Wrigley, I usually go to McDonalds first, get a couple double cheeseburgers and a small drink and head to the game. It saves a couple bucks if you’re tight on money(which I always am).
"I think Hendry still has a few years to serve on his 'grand larceny' sentence before he can shop in Pittsburgh again" - ballhawk
I'm not sure
that’s entirely fair. For those of us who for whatever reason don’t get to Wrigley regularly, its a big event just being there and we want to enjoy the whole occasion to the full. Yes by all means, watching the game should be the priority, but there’s much more in and around Wrigley it would be a shame to miss. Get there early and make the most of it.
However, there was a very similar thread here just a month or so ago which might give the OP some ideas…
hope that link works…not tried posting one before
Watch a ballgame...THAT is the thing to do at Wrigley
Last thing we need is more drunken frat boys making a mockery out of the joint or more jabbering people with cell phone glued to the ear. Wrigley Field isn’t the mall. You come to watch a baseball game and act like class fans.
Rich Harden Fever, Catch It !!!!!!!!!!
and here I agree with you 100%
I think cell phones should be banned from the park. How many times to people have to stand up and wave to people they’re talking to on the phone.
by princefieldersdiet on Jul 21, 2008 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Sure
wouldn’t want to be reachable by my wife should there be an emergency while I am at thegame. try thinking a little harder about what life is like aithout anyone to care about but yourself.
Watching the game is important but people come from around this country and even beyond to see this field and its history. Maybe someone wants to actually take more than just the game in.
Calm down.

Your friend calls you because your house is on fire?
Sorry friend, but I’m at a baseball game. WHAT WOULD OTHERS THINK IF I PICKED UP MY PHONE?!(GASP!)
"I think Hendry still has a few years to serve on his 'grand larceny' sentence before he can shop in Pittsburgh again" - ballhawk
Proposal: A Designated Cell Phone Area
Much like they have in and around airports so as to avoid accidents while dropping off and picking up passengers.
Eat More Katsui
Given people trying to be seen behind the plate look like morons
But a designated cell phone area? Really?
If someone calls me and I answer what difference does it make to you. Assuming I’m not one of those jerks that yells into the phone (I’m not) it is really no different than talking to the person in the seat next to me.

Like Principal Skinner Says
“It only takes one to ruin it for everybody”. The annoying “look at me” folks need to be dealt with, even if it means not being able to take a call during the game. So if the choice was ban/no ban, put me down as in favor of a ban.
Eat More Katsui
No they don't
need to be “dealt with”
You need to deal with it, ignore them if it bothers you that much. If you can’t ignore them then get counseling.

Please don't add numbers and subtract numbers
to my post. I can’t stand that. If you guys do it, fine, that’s your choice, but don’t do it for my posts please. If you like it, recommend it, or if you don’t like it, feel free to tear me a new one.

Fair Enough
Instead of a “-1” I will simply say I disagree with you. No cell phones at the game unless they can be served up on a tee.
Eat More Katsui
Wait
is that what you meant not to do?
Calm down.

You're not annoying at all.

Exactly
It was maybe ‘cool’ back in 98 when cell phones weren’t as commonplace….but now it’s ridiculous.
Oh and leave your light-up Cubs signs at home as well.

Again...
the cell phones may be needed for more than just “hey look at me am I on tv??”
Calm down.
by Kinky Reggae on Jul 21, 2008 2:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Exactly.
I use mine, for example, to communicate with and meet people who I have tickets for.
For those who do the “HEY I’M ON TV LOOKIE ME!!!” stuff, yes, those people should be banned from ballparks forever.
But don’t ban all cellphones because of a few idiots.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Understandable…yes
I totally agree with both points. But the guys trying to get on WGN are ridiculous….and once again nothing was is/was as bad as the guy in Arizona last year with the sign…sad moment for Cubs fans.

I agree totally with that.
People who TRY to get on TV? Ridiculous. I know I’ve been seen on camera at Cubs games before, but I don’t TRY to do that. I’m there to see baseball.

Cell phones...
behind home plate seems a bit goofy to me too…but it sure is better than a guy with a sign saying….
John: chapter and verse (whatever that was)...
or any kind of sign, for that matter.

They should just give each person a "baseball acumen test" at the gate before they can enter the park.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Oh crap you nailed it man
I was going to suggest “talk on your cell phone” to him for something to do at Wrigley. And I’m sure I wasn’t going to be the only one!
It’s a good thing your completely relevant and not at all stupid and innappropriate post headed that suggestion off before someone made it!
The search function is your friend.
We already covered this topic right here in June. Man, I start getting really concerned about the amount of time I spend here when I start remembering stuff like this.

Photos
You can’t go wrong if you walk around and use up a roll of film (or smart card) from every possible angle. Take as much of Wrigley home with you as possible. (in photos)
Go down close and see if you can get a player/coach, etc. to get you a handfull of dirt (preferably from around home plate, where the Babe called his shot) and put it in a baggie…or maybe even a piece of ivy that you can plant at home.
They probably won’t but you can try!

Want to hear about those great YANKEE fans ?
By the end of the 12 inning game on Sat. at least 2/3rds of them had left in fact half
of them left before the 9th and at least a third of them showed up after the game started.
Needless to say the most expensive seats cleared out the fastest. I talked to a lot
of folks who basically came for a few innings to see Yankee Stadium. Trust me there
are plenty of people paying not much attention to the game all over the country.

Don't embarass Cubdom
Any of you guys catch the Cubs fans in Houston sitting along first base in camera range of left handed hitters? They took every opportunity to make “C” signs with their hands with big goofy smiles. I appreciate that we get such fan support all over the country but please don’t ham it up for the cameras. It gets pretty annoying and somewhat embarrassing.
+1

My Suggestions
Get a photo of the back of the CF scoreboard. It would be cool if you could get a photo of it during the day and then when it’s lit up at night.
Take a stroll up Kenmore Avenue where some of the titanic blasts have landed. I remember when Dave Kingman hit a shot that landed on the porch of the 3rd house from the corner.
After the game, hang out by the players’ parking lot and see if you can get an autograph. As others here have said, ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ go a LONG way with the players. :-)
Check out the merchandise stores all around the park, and also the taverns.
Finally, consider taking the El to and from the game. It’s fun to notice how the number of fans swell as the train gradually makes its way to Wrigley, and the post-game trip back into downtown is also fun (even moreso when the Cubs win).

My cellphone wallpaper is the back of the scoreboard
"WGN, Channel 9 Cubs Baseball, Excitingly, Importantly, Dramatically Yours." - Jack Brickhouse
I usually snap a photo...
... of the scoreboard on a sunny day and use that as my cellphone wallpaper. Just got a new phone so it’s time to take a new photo.
