Minor League Wrap--July 21
Easy night for me tonight.
Iowa Cubs
Did not play.
Tennessee Smokies
Did not play.
Daytona Cubs
Daytona lost to the Sarasota Reds, 4-3.
Billy Muldowney saw his record fall to 4-3. He allowed four runs on five hits in five innings. Muldowney walked two and struck out four.
Left fielder Ty Wright was 2 for 4 with a double. Catcher Steve Clevenger was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Second baseman Robinson Chirinos was 2 for 2 with a double and two walks.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs just keep rolling with a 7-1 thrashing of the Great Lakes Loons.
Jose Piña started and threw three shutout innings. He allowed only one hit. He neither walked nor struck out a batter.
Jay Jackson got the win with four shutout innings of relief. Jackson allowed one run on three hits. He struck out seven and didn't walk a Loon.
Left fielder Brandon Guyer was 2 for 3 with a double and a three-run home run. Guyer scored twice and had four RBI.
DH Luis Bautista was 3 for 3 with his eleventh home run, a solo homer in the eighth inning. Bautista scored twice.
Boise Hawks
The Hawks keep winning too with a 9-5 dousing of the Everett Aqua Sox.
Harol Tolentino got the win with five shutout innings. Tolentino allowed five hits and walked three. He struck out two.
John Muller picked up his eighth save by retiring the final batter of the game when Tommy Meija got into trouble in the ninth inning. Meija allowed four runs, two of which were earned, in 1.2 innings.
Marwin Gonzalez (and yes, the PA announcer in Boise unfortunately calls him "Speedy") was 3 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
First baseman Ryan Keedy was 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Keedy also walked once.
Left fielder Drew Rundle was 2 for 3 with a double and a walk. He scored once and batted one in. Catcher Carlos Perez was 2 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI.
Second baseman Josh Harrison managed to get three RBI despite going 0 for 3. A sac fly and two RBI ground outs.
Josh Vitters has not played in the last three games. I do not know why.
AZL Cubs
You may have heard that Alfonso Soriano was 0 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.
Second round pick Aaron Shafer made his professional debut. He threw a hitless inning of relief. He walked one and struck out one.

Bummed about this evening’s loss, so the only thing to look forward to is Josh’s report on the youngins’. Thanks for the update, Josh!
3 scoreless innings
w/ no Ks.
Thats curious. Seems like good defense behind him. Nice to see from Ryno’s boys. :-)

Vitters
Hope it’s the long drive from Boise to Peoria that’s rendered him inactive for the past 3 days.
Vitters
According to California Raisin he rolled his ankle the other day—it’s not serious, but the Cubs are being extra cautious with him.

Has anybody ever seen Yusuf Carter in person?
His slugging numbers are impressive with 10HRs in 65ish games but his average is only around .250. Just wondering if he has any type of promise in the future or not? A switch-hitting OFer who can play all three OF spots would be nice to have

Just saw on the I-Cubs website
that Rich Hill has been added to their roster. I’m sure everyone understands how good of news this is. I believe tomorrow should be the fifth day since he pitched last so hopefully we’ll have a good outing at AAA from Hill tomorrow.

I know I read the Minor League Wrap
he walked 3 while striking out 6. The walks were a little high and he was giving up hits, but like it’s been said before he is now finding the strike zone pretty regularly. 3 walks may be more than anybody would want in 4.1 innings but his starts aren’t about anything but getting the ball over the plate. Hendry and Lou are confident that if he is throwing strikes he can win games.

and
he has 1 BB through 4 innings, before running into problems in the 5th. Since he hasn’t gone beyond 4 innings before in these “rehab” starts maybe he was just fatigued a bit and lost his mechanics
to say he pitched “like garbage” is ill-informed and misguided
but that’s not particularly “new” for Blue Mike

Man
I just want to say that I absolutely love these intelligent discussions where people actually use evidence to support their position and don’t just shoot their mouths off like they were on sports radio.
Many thanks go out to my readers.

Josh do you have any word on Soriano's plans for today?
Is he rehabbing again?
by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 22, 2008 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions
I heard
the plan was to have him play in the field Tuscon today and then, if everything goes well, be activated tomorrow. But I’m just getting that info from Len Kasper like everyone else.

DAMN YOU BASEBALL GODS..
People actually still hold out hope on Hill?
Amazing.
Over time, your quickness with a cocky rejoinder must have gotten you many punches in the face - Al Swearengen
Why is that amazing?
Nothing really amazing about hope. I HOPE you realize them. Too much negativity coming from your keyboard—-CONSTANTLY.

Also, Kevin Goldstein over at Baseball Prospectus is having a chat right now (noon, Central Time) on the minors. BP is free this week, so go on over there and pepper him with Cubs questions!

Is it me
or is Soriano not in the lineup for the AZL Cubs today?

Can we hope this means he's playing tonight?

Soriano is probably playing with Iowa tonight
because they are in Tucson.

OT: Does anybody have a picture of Reed Johnson't moustache?
by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 22, 2008 1:07 PM CDT reply actions
No
I can’t find one online anywhere, but I want to find one.
by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 22, 2008 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, I can't find any either.
I did, however, find the Flickr account of a woman who enjoys posing semi-nude draped in a W flag and captioning each pic with a brief game summary. She’s pregnant in some of them.
Nanika Ga Okoru!
I remember reading about her at the beginning of the season
the more the Cubs win the more she undresses.

I can only assume what she'll do
hopefully we find out what happens after the WS

I just got my quesiton answered in the BP chat!
Jose Ceda (Tennessee): Am I a future all star closer?
Kevin Goldstein: I think so. Big fan of that arm.
Devin Hester, you are rediculous! -Jeff Joniak
Cool
I asked about Ceda too—he decided to answer your question instead.
I also asked about Samardzija, which he answered someone else’s question on as well.

I’ve been asking about Castillo for a while now, and still no answer.
I’m thinking about moving onto Rosa.

I'm surprised Beane didn't insist on him in the Harden deal
instead of Donaldson. Ceda would have made getting rid of Street easier sometime in the future. Maybe he sees something in Donaldson that I don’t.
Of course, maybe Hendry said no way.
I suspect
that is what happened. I assume that Hendry said up front that Vitters and Ceda were off-limits (Samardzija too, but he has a full NTC on that front.)
Beane wanted Gallagher pretty badly and the Cubs weren’t going to add Ceda to a package with Gallagher. Beane also wanted to make a deal quickly before Harden hit the DL again, which we hope doesn’t happen.

Donaldson's Stats
Granted it’s the Cal League (A+) 41 AB .390/.468/.707 1.175 OPS
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

I am really, really impressed by him. He might be a serious steal.
