Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Tuesday 7/22, 8:40 CT

Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks, Jul 22, 2008 8:40 PM CDT

Next Game

Chicago Cubs
@ Arizona Diamondbacks

Tuesday, Jul 22, 2008, 8:40 PM CDT
Chase Field

Jason Marquis vs Yusmeiro Petit

Partly cloudy. Winds blowing out to right field at 5-10 m.p.h. Game Time temperature: Around 100.

Complete Coverage >

At the time you read this, I'm going to be seeing "The Dark Knight". I'll be back in time to see the game, so you all start without me.

As noted in this FanPost: the game on Monday 8/4 at Wrigley Field vs. the Astros has had the game time changed to 6:05 pm CT and it will be on ESPN (in addition to WCIU in Chicago). Also, the game on Sunday 8/10 will now be a night game on ESPN, 7:05 pm CT -- and since the maximum number of Sunday night appearances is five, that's it for the Cubs for this year, so the TBD games on 8/31 and 9/21 will now officially be day games.

Today's Starting Pitchers

Micah Owings was supposed to start tonight, but he threw in relief yesterday so the D'backs will go with Petit, who was a last-minute starter in a similar situation just about a year ago, July 22, 2007 at Wrigley Field, where he came in and shut the Cubs down on three hits over six innings. A month later in Phoenix, though, the Cubs hit him early and often, including an inside-the-park HR by Derrek Lee, though Arizona won that game when tonight's starter, Jason Marquis, couldn't hold a 3-1 lead.

And it really WOULD be a good idea to activate Alfonso Soriano tonight. He's 4-for-6 lifetime vs. Petit with 3 doubles.

Marquis was outstanding vs. the Giants in his last outing on July 11. That's what is so maddening about Marquis -- at times he looks absolutely dominant, and other times clueless. He is 2-4, 3.30 in 9 appearances (8 starts) vs. Arizona, one of those wins coming July 20, 2007 at Wrigley Field.

Today's game is on WGN, on FSN Arizona, and at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Today's first pitch thread, as yesterday, will post a bit before first pitch at 8:30 pm CT. The overflow comment threads will post at 10 pm and 11 pm CT -- I don't expect today's game to be as short as yesterday's!

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Astros traded for Randy Wolf

Don’t know if it was being discussed in the game recap or not, but if it was, I apologize.

But man, I feel bad for that organization, they keep trading away their prospects, building like they have a chance this year, when really they are just dooming their future.

I just want to say this

There is too much hate and given up going on in BCB, and its kind of making me naucious. We lost 3 in a row to TB and bounced back alright… we lost 3 in a row to the White Sox and we bounced back alright, or atleast maintained a good enough ballclub to stay ontop, and well we have lost 3 of the last 4, last night to a team that always beats us. I just want to say once again for my cubs motto of 2008…... WELL BE JUST FINE!!!!

The Cubs were put back to #1 on ESPNS power rankings, after we were dropped to 7 then to 4 and now back to 1. The thing I dont understand about power rankings… I thought it goes off of the performance in the last week + your overall record. So how are we put at 1, is it because of boston, the white sox and TB slow starts or what.. hmm

Matsuzaka said...

He was so angry about Redsox trainers limited his pitch count between starts and spring training – he has his own way to build up his shoulder and maintain it during the season, but he could feel right at all last year, and even this year (though he is 10-1 and 2.65 ERA).

Based on what has happened with pitchers in the past here

I understand why the Red Sox were careful with him. Nothing scares a team more than a hurt pitcher and they are terrified of a guy throwing too many pitches.

Dragons if your in here I got a question?

I apologize if you have already answered this….

Was Fukudome a streaky hitter in Japan? If not, has he gone through tough streaks like this, and how did he bounce back? Do you think its the pressure of Chicago Cubs baseball getting to him, the tedious MLB schedule? Or is it true that the scouting reports finally caught up to him and now its his turn to adjust to the pitchers?

What I want to knwo is if Perry

has any idea of how to make adjustments or suggestions to a hitter with such an unorthodox swing. Maybe his comments are getting lost in trasnslation….

Maybe he needs to commit to either

the fastball in or the breaking ball away until he gets to two strikes. Not both. I think Murray would scare the crap out of him!

Hell...set up a bar in the dugout. It might loosen these guys up.

My wishes for tonight:
Riot stay hot!
Wonder hamster stay hot!
D Lee stand tall and drive the ball
A Ram pretend you got two strikes and use right field
Soto see A Ram but forget the two strike idea
D Ro keep using the right center gap
Johnson…shave that monster on your face
J Ed…a little top hand pehaps?
Marquis pitch like your job is on the line ;-)

Lou on Dome's "rest"....

“What we want to do for this young man is help him out and get him going,” Piniella said. “I know he works hard and he’s got the routine, but it’s a little different playing in this country than in Japan. The travel is a lot greater, the day-night games, the humidity, learning the new league, the media. Maybe if he eases up a little bit, it might help.”

Apparently the rules of Major League Baseball...

...prohibit a team from having a hitter in the first two spots of the lineup with an OPS above .800.

by cwyers on Jul 22, 2008 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions

.800?

If this was prison I would shank you.

by brownbuddha on Jul 22, 2008 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

DeRosa's OPS is .810.

Theriot and Dome both have OPSes below that mark. Guys like Edmonds, Soto, even Fontenot are outhitting them so far this season.

But this isn’t a complaint specific to Theriot, Dome or even the Cubs. Major league teams in general seem allergic to batting their best hitters at the top of the order. Makes no sense to me.

by cwyers on Jul 22, 2008 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

what is OPS?

If this was prison I would shank you.

by brownbuddha on Jul 22, 2008 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

from wiki..

OPS) is a baseball statistic calculated as the sum of a player’s on-base percentage and slugging percentage.[1] The abilities of a player both to get on base and to hit for power, two important hitting skills, are represented, making it an effective way of measuring the player’s offensive worth. An OPS of .900 or higher in Major League Baseball puts the player in the upper echelon of offensive ability. Typically, the league leader in OPS will score near, and not necessarily below, the 1.000 mark.
