Astros get Wolf
My first reaction was to rofl, I guess this is the Astros response to Milwaukee getting Sabathia and the Cubs getting Harden and Gaudin. Um, Really Ed Wade?
Sabathia..........Harden.................................................................Wolf??????????
Someone needs to tell Ed Wade that the Astros ship sailed long ago and that any moves he makes at this point is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Someone needs to tell Ed Wade that the Astros shouldn't be trying to compete with the Joneses when you're so far away from being a Jones yourself you can barely see them. I'm left wondering where the 'Stros are going to be in two years? They didn't have a great farm system to begin with and now Wade has gutted it for the likes of Miguel Tejada and Randy Wolf among others. Where are those guys going to be in two years? Where are the prospects he traded going to be in two years? If Mr. Wade was smart he'd stop being the Anti-Beane and start trying to stockpile some good, young talent to the organization and stop adding aging players who are on the down hill side of their careers.
Anyway, nothing personal against Randy Wolf. He's descent enough I suppose. He's not going to do a damn thing for the Astros playoff chances though this year and I suspect anyone who's paying attention knows that. Oh well, maybe before it's all said and done Wolf will administer a beating to Ed Wade, ala Shawn Chacon. Might as well get some entertainment from this after all.

Didn't Wade ever hear of the story about
...the boy who cried Wolf? Not a happy ending.

Really hard to figure this one out
Which team is stupider? At least the Padres are saving money. But that doesn’t say much, as they are headed for a 99-loss season. Wolf was pretty ineffective in his past few starts. His trade value dimished. Perhaps only the Astros are dumb enough to want him. This may be a way for the Astros stay out of last place, with Oswalt out.
Outside of that, this is a senseless deal.

Agreed
Someone on Crawfish Boxes brought up the point that Wolf may end up being a Type B free agent. What’s the rule for type B’s, one sandwich pick? If so maybe the ‘Stros will get something better than Chad Reineke for the $2.5 million that they’re going to throw down the Randy Wolf drain the rest of the year, although with Wade calling the shots I wouldn’t bet on it.

Offering him arbitration is a little risky though
He could end up accepting.

Good point
Didn’t think of that. I suppose they could do worse if he accepted, it’s not like their rotation is stocked right now anyway. Heck, Wolf is probably their #3 right now.

You can bet
when a team makes a move that’s hard to figure out and doesn’t really make sense that a GM like Wade or Bavasi is involved. Remember a few years ago when the M’s were treading water at the break but weren’t technically out of the race and Bill Bavasi started trading prospects for aging backups in an obviously futile attempt to make the playoffs? That’s what Wade is doing here. His reasoning doesn’t have to be based in reality. Despite the fact that Reineke isn’t really a prospect, he’s adding payroll at a point when he should be trying to reduce payroll, he’s adding mediocre vets when he should be trying to deal them. Essentially he doesn’t know what he’s doing, so I guess that’s why.

Reineke is a prospect.
He’s sixth in KG’s rankings of Astros prospects, ninth in BA’s, 11th in Sickle’s. That averages out to between 8-9.
Okay, sure, that says as much about the sorry state of the Astros’ farm system as anything else. But a hemopheliac is the sort of person who can least stand some needless bleeding.

It would have made sense LAST year.
Then they could have had Wolf and Lamb on the same team.

The Pittsburgh Pirates once had Moose, Lamb and Veale.
No, really. Check their 1971 roster.
And the Cubs once had a battery of Trout and Lake. I love this stuff.

Next year the Cubs can sign Wolf and Lamb
and bring Veal up from the minors with Chad Fox
We would practically have our own Zoo.

Here's a link...
...to a fanpost over at the Crawfish Boxes discussing the trade. I’m not sure how widely trafficked that site is, but it might be fun to gauge ‘Stros fans reactions. Of the two comments up already, one user seems to be looking at Wolf as major league roster filler.

Why would they do that?
They’re not even in the run for the postseason.

Yeah
It’s too bad really because guys like Ed Wade are the last of a dying bread. There won’t be so many stupid GM’s around much longer, at least not nearly as many as there used to be. Dave Littlefield, Bill Bavasi, Ed Wade, Allard Baird. Who are some other? Syd Thrift comes to mind. Those guys are actually pretty cool to have in the game as long as they aren’t associated with the Cubs.

"Dying bread".
That describes Ed Wade perfectly.

Maybe Oswalt's injury is more severe than originally thought...
...and they don’t have a starter in the minors?

Renieke
was a starter. Not a very good one but it’s not like good or bad is really going to matter from here on out for Houston. I can’t believe that the tiny bit of goodwill that Houston is going to get from it’s fans for trying to win is going to be worth the $2+ million that they are going to pay Wolf. This is a terrible use of resources for a team that’s not going to win anything.

Wolf has an ERA of 6.63 away from Petco
I truly feel sorry for the Astros organization.

I don't feel sorry
for the Astros at all, I’ve never liked them. Even though they’re our direct competitors my dislike of them is deeper than it probably should be, more irrational. That said, I can’t understand why they hired Wade in the first place. McLane must not be a very good business man because if he were good he would have known better than to hire an unqualified friend to run his business. It’s nice to see this kind of incompetence in Houston but it’s baffling why it’s there in the first place, I guess you’ve got to blame McLane first.

I don't like them either, don't get me wrong
They may be one of my least favorite teams in baseball. But it is still sad to watch a once respectable organization be completely gutted and destroyed. Not in a, “oh, I really hope they can do good,” sort of way, but in a, “oh, that is one of the most depressing things I have ever seen,” sort of way.

Ed Wade is the worst baseball executive in the league
Well, maybe second worst next to Ned Colletti. But at any rate we won’t have to worry about Houston very much longer because Wade is in the process of driving that franchise into the stone age. He is terrible in all dimensions of front office operation.
