Bartman Returns?

I just read on Yahoo that the organizers of the upcoming National Sports Collector's show in Rosemont have offered Steve Bartman a 25,000.00 payout if he shows up on the 31st at 1pm and signs ONE picture of himself "interfering" with Moises Alou.  Now I don't want to start another argument about what he did or didn't do at the infamous game-those arguments have been done to death.

But one thing that's always impressed me about the guy is that he's always shunned any publicity and, presumably,  opportunities to translate his "five minutes" into some quick cash.   So here's hoping that he doesn't go along with this cynical pr stunt on the part of the show's organizers.   I'd like to think I wouldn't go for the easy cash either but, then, it's easy for me to say that since I don't have somebody waving 25G under my nose.

Anyway, I'd be really interested in knowing what other Cub fans think about all of this?  Will he turn down the money and continue to shun publicity?   Would you?  Here's hoping.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

He will turn it down.

Also, I have a very good feeling that Bartmann himself is a member of this board and that he will weigh and say he wont show up either.

Bartmann——Ive let it go and I never blamed you.

Hammer, you are correct.

I will not attend that event. Certainly not for a lousy $25K. I wouldn’t take a whiz on Moises Alou’s hands for $25K. And, from what I hear, he does that himself anyway.

We can all say what we would have done in his shoes...

I am not afraid to say that I probably would have done the same thing. I have never blamed him for anything that happened to the cubs in that series. I actually argue with my non-cub fan friends when his name gets brought up. They always try to poke with that stick saying “I bet you hate that guy.” I always say “Nope, I am sure I would have done the same thing if I was in his shoes.” I just hope that the fun of that year returns this year and I can celebrate at the end of the NLCS this time.

Guilty vs. Innocent

Alou – Guilty of overreacting and making an ass of himself
Gonzalez – Guilty of sucking in the clutch
Baker – Guilty of not bringing in a reliever
Many Cubs fans – Guilty of putting blame on an individual rather than sucking it up and accepting that their favorite team choked
Prior – Guilty on multiple charges, including lack of a spine
Cubs Brass – guilty of not actually acquiring a decent reliever for the stretch and postseason.

Steve Bartman – innocent of all charges.

Add Farnsworth to List of Guilty

Had Farnsworth done a good job of relieving, the Cubs would have only been down 4-3 going into the bottom of the 8th. The Cubs still would have had a chance of coming back. Instead, Farnsworth got lit up, and the Cubs were down 8-3 entering the last half of the 8th. The team was totally flat for the rest of that game.

I deleted two of them, and I’m mulling over deleting this one.

Not because it’s Bartman, although I never, ever, EVER am going to mention him in anything I write. To me, it’s ancient history.

I may delete this because I received a press release (rather anonymously headed “Bleed Cubbie Blue,” without even “Dear” in front of it from a company that’s in the sports collectible business. If this person had posted this himself, I’d have deleted it as spam.

Which it basically is.

But none of those things is true. And he paid the price.

Steve, you're a good man ... a true Cubs fan ..

We all know you won’t be going there to those scum sucking media hypesters. It’s a bunch of idiots wanting publicity. You won’t give that to them.

How I wish this never happened to you, boss. You loved baseball – you coached little league. You loved our Cubs, our team. You high fived everyone around you when an out was made that night. You were one of us. You were us.

I remember watching the night that happened .. and how not only certain jackass idiots who call themselves “Cubs fans” made your life a living hell at the game, then the bottom feeders at Fox turned you into a pariah that night. I hate to say it but when I saw them replay it again, I looked at my wife and said “That poor guy’s life has changed forever.”

I would have done exactly the same thing. Several other people did. You just got to be the fingered one. I’m just sorry that we keep, as the saying goes, underestimating the power of stupid people in large groups. If you’re ever in E Tennessee, I’d like to shake your hand and buy you supper. Hope things are going well in your life and that you’ll once again be able to get into the “Friendly Confines” and be who you are .. a Cubs fan cheering on the Cubs as part of the collective Cubs Nation that, unfortunately, have too many loonies on the fringe who love to meat the press.

All that happened to him...

Which is why he should cash in now. He doesn’t owe anyone anything. Cubs fans turned on him and the media made him a villian.

Michael Wilbon, who I generally like, is a scumbag on this issue. He won’t let it go and for someone in his position, that stance is flat-out irresponsible.

He will never be forgiven, nor forgotten. The least he should do is cash in.
