Minor League Wrap--July 23
Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs lost to the Tucson Sidewinders, 10-7.
Starter J. R. Mathes pitched six innings plus and allowed four runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out three.
His fellow PCL All-Star Mike Burns got battered like a Christmas piñata. Burns got hammered for five runs in an inning of work. He also allowed an inherited runner to score.
Catcher Koyie Hill hit his tenth home run in the eighth inning, a three-run blast. Hill was 2 for 4 with four RBI
Tennessee Smokies
Maybe they didn't hand Rays überprospect David Price his first professional loss, but the Smokies did come out on top with a 4-3 victory over the Montgomery Biscuits in ten innings.
Grant Johnson started and kept the Smokies close by allowing three run on seven hits and a walk over five innings. Johnson struck out three Biscuits.
Matt Avery got the win in relief. He pitched three shutout innings and allowed three hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out one.
First baseman Jake Fox connected off of Price for his 12th home run for the Smokies. Overall Fox was 2 for 5 with two RBI.
Second baseman Nate Spears was 2 for 5 with a run scored. Right fielder Doug Deeds continued his torrid July by going 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. Deeds scored twice. Left fielder Tyler Colvin was 2 for 4 with a walk and an RBI.
Daytona Cubs
It sure does rain a lot in Florida.
Peoria Chiefs
The Chiefs lost to the Dayton Dragons, 4-3.
Audy Santana started and threw five shutout innings. Santana allowed three hits and two walks. He struck out two Dragons.
Steve Vento got the loss by allowing two unearned runs in the eighth and the game-winning home run in the ninth. Vento was credited with one inning pitched and allowed four hits. He didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
First baseman Rebel Ridling hit his third home run for Peoria. It was a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Ridling was 1 for 3 and scored twice.
Boise Hawks
You probably already know this because Bob Brenly told you, but the Boise Hawks demolished the Everett Aqua Sox, 16-5.
Starter Casey Coleman allowed five runs in a 4.1 inning start. Coleman was touched for six hits and two walks. He struck out one.
Chris Carpenter was impressive in relief and won his first professional game. Carpenter threw 3.2 innings and allowed only one hit. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three.
Mark Pawelek closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.
Here you go, Bob! Catcher Michael Brenly was 3 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Right fielder Kyler Burke was even better, going 4 for 5 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI.
Left fielder Ryan Sontag was 2 for 4 with a triple and a walk. He scored twice and batted three in. DH Dwayne Kemp was 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Have to tell you Josh..
That it sure does rain a lot in florida line gave me a really good laugh. And again I want to thank you for doing all this for us. I’ve loved following the minors since I worked for the Low A team for the Royals 5 years ago but its so hard to follow so many teams. I really appreciate it.

Jake Fox
That name sounds real familiar was he called up in 2005 or 2006 to play either catcher or outfield?

I don't think Fox actually came up in 2005 or 2006...
He was in Daytona during most of those two years. I believe that Soto came up in 2005 and 2006 in September, not Fox.
As for Fox, despite the fact that he’s still listed as a catcher on MILB.com, I don’t think he’s actually played behind the plate since 2006.

More detailed information.
Fox was up twice in 2007 – in mid-July after the Cesar Izturis trade and mid-August. He hit 2-for-14 with 1 RBI. Last year, he came straight from Tennessee to Chicago.
I know this much simply because we were teammates in high school.

Sontag
Left fielder Ryan Sontag was 2 for 4 with a triple and a walk.
His fielding is self-indulgent, overrated crap.

Serious brawl between Peoria Chiefs and Dayton Dragons
Minor league pitcher Julio Castillo is being charged for allegedly throwing at a Dayton player, missing and hitting a fan in the stands….
Will be interesting to see how this story develops…

And I will come to my final resting place, out on Waveland Avenue. --Steve Goodman
