Pregame Thread: Cubs vs. Marlins, Thursday 7/24, 7:05 CT
Florida Marlins at Chicago Cubs, Jul 24, 2008 7:05 PM CDT
Well, this one worries me. The Cubs have been outstanding at home this year. But for some reason, the Florida Marlins have had their number -- both at home and on the road. The Marlins have defeated the Cubs ten consecutive times; the last Cub win vs. Florida was by the awful 2006 team, at Wrigley Field on April 25, 2006. Look at the Cub record after that game, too -- 12-7. From there to the end of the season they went 54-89.
Ugh. Enough of that. That was then and this is now. The Marlins have played well this year -- they stand one game out of first place and five games behind the wild-card leading Brewers -- but the Cubs are a better team.
Interesting baseball note totally unrelated to the Cubs: the Seattle Mariners are responding to fans who have kids with peanut allergies by setting up peanut-free sections for two games later this year. Before you say something like "oh, they're banning everything", keep in mind that the first symptom of a peanut allergy can be death.

Scott Olsen, who went to Crystal Lake South HS and was one of the mob outside of Wrigley Field during the 2003 playoffs (this AFTER he had been drafted by the Marlins!), is 1-0, 3.80 in four career starts vs. the Cubs. He hasn't faced any current Cub hitter for more than 10 AB; Aramis Ramirez is 4-for-9 (one HR) vs. Olsen.
Z was uncharacteristically wild in his last start in Houston, walking six. That's not the way to win. He is 5-0, 2.25 at home -- thank heavens, 13 of the next 17 games are at home, and the other four in Milwaukee, where the Cubs have played well the last few years. He is 3-1, 2.54 in seven lifetime starts vs. the Marlins, but has not faced most of the current bunch; the most career AB for any current Marlin vs. Z is 16 (Luis Gonzalez, 5-for-16).
Today's game is on cable: FSN Florida and CSN Chicago. Lately, EI has been carrying both home & road feeds for some games. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

No. No.
I just hate the Marlins, (for obvious reasons), and it came out in a weird way. I do think they’re are as useless as one of those really thin, small napkins. Hate comes out in weird ways.

You’ve never run out of TP, and only had a crappy thin napkin to, uh… take care of business, shall we say? If you have you know they are useless. I think the Marlins are useless like a napkin. I’m not creepy. Just strange sometimes.

Jimmy, you seem to have forgotten why "Napkins"
It was an inadvertent result of the predictive text feature on my phone when I once sent a text about the Marlins. Thus they forever live in infamy as the Napkins.

Peanuts
It’s interesting to hear about the Mariner’s deciding to do this. I’ve always wondered what people with those allergies do at baseball games, if they can go at all. Unknown to many, some people can “bee” so sensitive to their particlular allergen that they can have severe reactions just by breathing in minute bits. Although Al, I just wanted to mention that the first “symptoms” in this type of severe allergy would be a steep drop in blood pressure or wheezing. Death wouldn’t happen until atleast after the blood pressure part. A bored FYI.
by DrakeCub on Jul 24, 2008 5:22 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
i thought there must be something other than death as an initial symptom. otherwise how would you even know that you should sit in the peanut-free section?

Google is your friend
Peanut allergy is the most common cause of deaths from food allergy.
Allergy to peanuts affects 1.3% of the general population. Peanut allergy affects 7 percent of brothers and sisters of persons with the allergy. (British Medical Journal 1996;313:518-521.)
Facts About Peanut Allergy
Peanut Allergy Prevalence
- Peanut and tree nut (pecans, walnuts, almonds, etc.) allergy can be a serious condition that affects approximately three million Americans, or 1.1 percent of the population.
- Peanuts are the leading cause of severe food allergic reactions, followed by shellfish, fish, tree nuts and eggs. (Food Allergy Network)
Peanut Allergy Characteristics
- Peanut allergy can be characterized by more severe symptoms, such as gastrointestinal, skin and respiratory symptoms, than other food allergies and by a high rate of symptoms on minimal contact. (“Clinical characteristics of peanut allergy,” Clin. Exp. Allergy, 1997; “An evaluation of the sensitivity of subjects with peanut allergy to very low doses of peanut protein,” J. Allergy Clin. Immunol., 1997)
- Severe sufferers also may experience potentially life-threatening anaphylactic shock in response to ingestion of peanuts. Anaphylactic shock is an allergic reaction in which the release of histamine causes swelling, difficulty in breathing, heart failure, circulatory collapse, and sometimes death.
- As many as one-third of peanut-sensitive patients have severe reactions, such as fatal and near-fatal anaphylaxis. (“Anaphylactic deaths in asthmatic patients,” Allergy Proc., 1989)

Solid summary
Al, as usual. I can’t STAND the Marlins, and not just for reasons left unsaid here. I was sickened when they beat Cleveland in ‘97. It was almost like Jake Taylor laid down that bunt, took one step out of the batter’s box, and promptly shattered his ankle. Anyways, the Marlins make me nervous, again. Every time I’m able to stomach Sportscenter or BT commentary long enough to catch highlights, it seems like some Marlin player is smashing monstrous home runs. Let’s hope Carlos can shut them down, and our offense goes the way of Reed Johnson last night. Go Cubbies!

One thought on Bobby Howry...
It has always bugged me that in that disaster season of 2006, Dusty Toothpicks used Howry 37 times after the AS break. 37 FRIGGIN TIMES in a season that was totally lost just so ass hole Dusty could try to make sure he didn’t lose 100 games!! I use to scream at the TV and wonder why this expensive relief pitcher was being used so often in a lost season. Why not use young arms from AAA? The season was over in July, anyway.
I have always wondered if the overuse of Howry at the end of 2006 is the reason that he was so slow to get going in 2007 and he has never been the same, period. Howry is no spring chicken.
I have always wondered if Dusty’s overuse of Howry in 2006 was the beginning of the end.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
by LAcarl519 on Jul 24, 2008 6:02 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Dusty's overuse.
Dusty has ruined every pitcher who was ever managed by him, right? Howry was thrown a ton of innings for a reliever for 9 of 10 healthy years in the majors. The lowest total being 42.3 in 2004 with Cleveland. In fact he threw more innings in 2007 under Lou than he did under Dusty in 2007. I think he’s just finally wearing down, like we knew he would eventually.

I get your point.
But 2007 was a pennant race. What was the purpose in running him out there (so often) in a season where you are 5 games either way of 100 losses and the guy is no spring chicken. That is the point I am trying to make—Friggin Dusty just wanted to save face!
The Cubs had just made a major investment in Howry and needed to keep him fresh for when they DID need him, like in 2007 and 2008. Not in 2006.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!

I think they just pitched him
like he had normally been pitched during his career. I can’t remember exactly who they could have used besides Howry in ‘06. Who knew if Howry would still even be pitching in ‘07, ‘08, or ‘09? I just think Dusty is an easy scapegoat. Most of all, I honestly believe that Howry is wearing down because he’s been pitching a lot of innings for a lot of years.
Jimmyeatworld
by Jimmyeatworld on Jul 24, 2008 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
But that is my point.
Why have him throw his normal workload in a lost season? Let the guy throw 25% less and be more fresh for the next year. What harm is there in that? Let some guy from AAA get more work in September.
THIS IS OUR CENTURY!!
by LAcarl519 on Jul 24, 2008 6:29 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I see your point Carl,
but I still don’t see how they could see that far ahead to save a pitcher for the next year, or the year after that. Now, if they could have seen that far ahead, by all means save the wear & tear on his arm. I still think that Dusty is an easy scapegoat. We have the benefit of hindsight.

Go to the web site of the home team.
They will sometimes put the pre-game schedule in the fan information section. Each team will get 45-60 minutes, so if it says that the home team starts at 4:15, the Cubs would go at 5:00 or 5:15. There are a few places in which the home team goes last (so their fans can see it); in that case you are SOL, but you might get a few autographs as the Cubs come off the field.

don’t look for BP on the last game of the series usually, though.

Mad Men
is a great show!!! A friend mentioned it to me and I got hooked it waching the all the episodes this past Sunday on AMC and On Demand.
If you’re going to watch Season 2, better watch Season 1. You’ll have a hard time following the show if you don’t.

It's about
an advertising agency on Madison Ave in 1960 and the various people that work there. Season 2 will start in 1962. There are a lot of great plot lines that you never see coming.
The guy who created the show was a writer on the Sopranos.

I have some photos of my Mom and Dad at a resort simply abbreviated as B.L. I’m pretty sure that it’s in Wisconsin, and I think the “L” is lake since they seem to be at a lakeside setting. Anyone have a clue as to what this resort might be?

for the Sox (they’re just another team to me), but those spots are obnoxious. Most of the White Sox fans I know hate them.

Dear god, what’s going on in South Florida? That’s not exactly a hitters’ park, and all four starting infielders have hit around 20-25 HR a piece. Seriously, Cantu and Jacobs?
