New Majestic Cubs T-Shirt
So, I got my newest Eastbay catalog, and they have a new Cubs t-shirt available. Funny, I don't remember the Cubs having three World Series titles... So I look closer. Now, I'm all for celebrating the Cubs pre-AL/NL merger success (NL titles in 1887, '80, '81, '82, '85 and '86 - as an aside, why aren't these titles more celebrated? I.E. no flags on the rooftop, etc.?), but the one year they pick (1884) the Cubs didn't even win the NL title (they finished 5th in the NL, and the Providence Grays beat the New York Metropolitans 3-0 in the "World Series" - a post-season exhibition between the top two teams in the National league)!
Anyway, thoughts?

Hmmm...That Is Odd
I have a good friend that works at Eastbay so I’ll have to call and get the scoop.
Eat More Katsui
the simple fact that it says world series for 1884 is wrong
first world series 1903.

No, there were several series played before 1900..
... that were called “World Series”, though not in the present-day sense of the term.

sorry
thats what I meant. I remember reading about some of those. From what I understand they weren’t taken very seriously.

They weren't...
... which is why one ended up as a tie.
The shirt is a big mistake… I wonder if they’ll become collectors’ items when Eastbay pulls them.

Dumb.
Someone decided to do this without checking first. All they had to do was look here to find out that the Cubs (then the “White Stockings” played in two of the pre-1900 “World Series”, losing one and tying the other.

1882 and 1885
The Cubs (White Stockings) tied the American Association’s Cincinnati Red Stockings at 1 game a piece in a “World Series” cut short by Cincinnati dropping out of the series. That’s according to the “infallible?” Wikipedia. In 1885, the Cubs (White Stockings) tied the AA’s St. Louis Browns at 3 games a piece with 1 tie in a “World Series”.
1882 and 1885 would be more appropriate for the T-shirt. Keep in mind, the first modern World Series was in 1903. Those matchups before 1900 between the NL and AA champions aren’t generally recognized as “legitimate” World Series.

Cubs Lost 1886 World Series
The Cubs lost the 1886 World Series to the St. Louis Browns 4 games to 2. The 1882 “World Series” can not be found on baseball-reference.com. That’s got to be because only 2 games were played of it. 1882 marked the first time any games were played between the champions of the National League and the old, old American Association (not to be confused with the AAA league that disbanded after the 1997 season or the current independent league of the same name).

So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.
Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.
But trust me…. You don’t.
I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you don’t know what you are talking about.
This is how bad info gets passed around.
If you dont know about the topic….Don’t make yourself sound like you do.
