Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Is it time yet to go shopping in the re-tread aisle?

Names like Damaso Marte, John Grabow, David Weathers, and others are going to be thrown around in the next week.  With the uncertainty surrounding so many of our relievers, is it worth giving up actual prospects for a relatively solid middle reliever/setup guy?

I don't think any of these guys are real difference makers, but a guy like Weathers can pick up a few saves for you if need be, and otherwise throw serviceable innings in the 6th-9th innings.

I didn't detect any sense of panic in this post

Just wondering about trading for journeymen relievers, because some of ours (Howry, Weurtz) aren’t cutting it.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

Didn't we have Weathers before?

And didn’t he, you know, suck out loud for us?

Yes, briefly

and no, not particularly.

2001 Cub

Weathers came over from the Brewers and had a 3.18 ERA for the Cubs in 28 appearances pitching 28 and 1/3 innings.

OK.

For some reason, I seem to remember him not pitching well at all for us. I guess I was wrong.

Funniest thing about Weathers

He has a limited no trade clause but according to an article today, he can’t REMEMBER which teams are on it.

I Remember the 1st Weathers Deal

We gave up Ruben Quevedo and at the time I was upset. “How could MacPhail do that, it’s another Karchner-for-Garland, yada yada yada….”. Sure was wrong about that one! lol

Weathers was trumpeted as a "difference maker" for the 2001 team.

I barely remember him even being a Cub.

The way I remember

The Cubs BP was ok that year but they made the deadline deal for Weathers.
Weathers was fine but it almost like he inadvertently upset the balance that existed and things went downhill. It was weird.

It wasn't just Weathers.

The McGriff acquisition - which virtually all of us wanted - seemed to put that team in the tank.

Strangely It Did

McGriff seemed to give off a negative inertia that infected the team and sent them reeling. Which is funny because his numbers were solid enough (.383 OBP, .559 SLG).

The BAD Howry is better than Weathers.
