Samardzija and Wood

It was just released on the Cubs post game show that The Shark has been officially called up.

I'm assuming he's being called up for Wood who's been placed on the 15 day DL. It will be backdated 10 days to July 14th meaning he can come off the DL on Wednesday for the final two games of the big Milwaukee series.

I've attached a poll that was on the Cubs post game show about Woods injury to see what you guys think.

Not worred--- need extra arm

I doubt Howry or Marmol will pitch tomorrow. I’d like to think Dempster can pitch 7 innings. Figure in Eyre might go 1 inning and depending on the lead Samardzija or Marshall can pitch an inning as well.

If Cubs have a strong lead Smardzija could do a 3 inning save which Lou had either Gallagher or Hart do last year. I wish him the best in what will probably be a short period in the Majors.

I wouldn't be worried

if it was anyone other than Wood. Except maybe if Mark Prior was still on the team.

I still haven't seen anything official on this anywhere.

Who announced it?

It was on the post game

show. Gail Fischer announced it was on his website and when the Cubs found that out they confirmed it.

Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden. Now that's a pair of Aces.

Speaking of pitchers in our bullpen...

When are we going to DFA Bob Howry.

I’m sick of this guy making our wins that much closer and making our losses look that much worse.

DEROSA: How did it feel when you're sitting in Baton Rouge and it came across the ticker that Mark DeRosa had just signed to play second base with the Chicago Cubs.

Yeah, he really sucked tonight, didn't he?

Considering Wood is going to be out until next week, I don’t think the Cubs are going to be getting rid of any pitchers soon.

He was pretty good last night.

Howry's definitely on shaky ground...

...but he WAS better last night (though, let’s be honest, DeRo saved his ass with that catch). Nonetheless, Bob Howry is a respected veteran relief pitcher and has been, overall, a valuable member of this Cubs team since he was acquired in ‘06. I think calling for his DFA is unnecessarily harsh – not to mention completely unrealistic.

Samardzija TO START SATURDAY!?!?!?!?!

Just got this from the Sun Times:

Jeff Samardzija could start for the Cubs on Saturday.
Samardzija is expected to be called up to take Kerry Wood’s roster spot on Friday, and the Cubs could have him make a start to give Rich Harden an extra day of rest. Nothing is official yet.

That would mean the Brewers would miss Harden

Don’t like that, but if the golden boy (and in this case I mean Harden, not Samardzija) needs pampering, then so be it.

You have to wonder if this urgency to see Samardzija pitch (after all, Wuertz or Hart could have been called uo instead) is to see what they got with less than a week till the trade deadline. Maybe they are weighing a so-so trade, but want to see what fresh help they have in house. They already know Marshall inside and out, so they don’t need to see him take a spot start. Plus, he could be on the table in any possible deadline trade.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

by JohnM on Jul 25, 2008 8:14 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

As Al said on the Game Review

They’d be more likely to do this on Friday so Harden won’t miss the Milwaukee series.

If they push Harden back...

they should push him back two days so he can pitch Monday against the Brewers and CC Sabathia.

by chipwood23 on Jul 25, 2008 10:19 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That would make sense, I guess.

But then who starts Sunday? Marshall?

It that is so than you are saying Marquis has been moved to the bullpen

Samardzija if he is going to start on Saturday, than Harden is pushed to either Sunday …skipping Marquis….where the Cubs have lined up Lilly, Zambrano, Dempster and ? for Milwaukee….which could be Samardzija or Marquis.

If they move Harden to Monday and start Marquis on Sunday and you then line up Harden, Lilly, Zambrano, Dempster for Milwaukee in that order.

Now this either insinuates that Marquis could be traded before Tuesday (Wood’s return) leaving Samardzija in the rotation. The thing is Cubs have Wuertz, Hart, Ascanio and even Hill in the minors.

something is up

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

by Ivy Walls on Jul 25, 2008 10:38 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It definitely seems like Hendry

has something in the works that he doesn’t want to talk about until it’s happened. To me it would seem there is a chance that Marquis and who else knows is on their way out and Hendry is looking for that 5th starter. Hopefully Marquis and whatever else for a quality bench bat or a good lefty reliever. As long as Marquis huge contract is gone I don’t care.

by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jul 25, 2008 10:48 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I really doubt

that Marquis would be moved out for Samardzija in the middle of a pennant race. Who knows what he’ll do? If anything maybe Marshall in the rotation. Based on recent performance, they can’t count on Hart.

Personally I think they will keep Marquis. He may be left off any playoff roster again but I think Marquis is a better option right now than complete unknowns.

by rlpete on Jul 25, 2008 11:10 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If Piniella had his way...

...I think he would like to see Marquis go bye bye. He doesn’t like his style of pitching, nor does he trust him.

As always, the problem is getting a willing partner to make this happen.

And finding a replacement

I agree with you that Lou doesn’t like Marquis but I don’t think he’s ready to start a rookie down the stretch. Especially one who has never pitched in the majors and has shown streaks of wildness in the past.

by rlpete on Jul 25, 2008 11:18 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's a tough call...

...but again, I really think Marquis drives Piniella nuts. With Hill probably done for 08 (and probably beyond), I wouldn’t doubt Piniella and Hendry may decide to give Samardzija a shot, and they can always use Marshall as a fall back.

Just nuts

Heck we have to start Marshall next or bring a guy up from the minors in EVERY rotation to give
Harden an EXTRA days rest. He had something like 9 days off between his last starts , if he can’t
make his starts something is just wrong.
