Peoria [Cubs] vs Dayton, 17 Ejections

Just saw the headline on ESPN.com [See Video]. Tempers flared tonight in a class A minor league game between the Peoria Cubs and the Cincinatti affiliate, Dayton Dragons.

During this event-filled half inning there were three hit batters, managers screaming in eachother's faces, players hurt, and a fan was injured.

Peoria Cubs pitcher Julio Castillo, in a completely uncalled for move, threw a baseball as hard as he could into Dayton's dugout. Too bad this kid has bad command because he airmailed Dayton's dugout and hit a fan who then had to be taken to the hospital

Being suspended or kicked out of the Cubs organization should be the least of Julio's worries because he faces criminal charges and most certainly a lawsuit.

This is just sad. What a way to represent your organizations, huh? So much for enjoying a nice summer evening of baseball.

There apparently

had been some bad blood brewing between these teams for a while. That in no way, shape or form excuses what Castillo did, which is reprehensible. But there was a beanball war going on and Castillo (and the Dayton pitcher, who hit Nate Samson in the first) should have been ejected long before the fight broke out.

But I’d say Castillo has very little future in baseball right now. In fact, he likely doesn’t have much future in this country.

whoa...

i just finished watching that video, and all i can say is good bye Julio Castillo and good luck finding a good lawyer.

I also think we’ve likely seen the last of Carmelo Martinez, who went way over the line by pushing the other manager.. that’s just not done.

and lastly, i wonder what the Dayton players said or did that made the umpires react the way they did. I know as well as everyone else just how profane professional baseball players are on the field… but this musta’ been a real doozy. not that that in anyway excuses what Castillo did.

who i really feel bad for, though, is the fan who got hit by that ball… he should at the very least get free season tickets to the real Cubs out of this.

Who I feel bad for......?

Ryne Sandberg. His team is a reflection of him. He’s going to have a very nice [NOT EVEN CLOSE] pep talk to his team and there will definitely be some in-house discipline.

I have a hard time imagining that this event happens with Ryne in the dugout. Sure, Ryne can have a fiery side sometimes but I say this doesn’t happen if he’s there.

Isn't it strange....

that during Carmelo Martinez playing days with the Cubs, his nickname was “Mellow”. Far from it last night.

Jim Hendry has much more pressing issues to deal with at this time with the trading deadline approaching . But he will have to deal with the aftermath of this mess to clean up also. So much for getting some relief help or a RH bat off the bench.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

As an FYI

Unfortunately there is precedent (I believe it was an Orioles pitcher) for holding the team liable when a pitcher throws a ball in the stands – intentionally – and it hurts a fan. I’m assuming Castillo has no money, so it’s likely that if the hurt fan sues, he/she will sue the Chiefs and the Cubs.

What the hell is going on with Ryno?

Has he lost control? Maybe. Heard he’s doing his best Bobby Cox impersonation by getting tossed several times in his year+ in Peo.

If there’s been bad blood between these teams in the past, it’d be interesting to see what the umpires did/said before the game started. Seems perhaps they didn’t start tossing players soon enough. Not that it would have stopped things but if the umps say to the coaches/managers before a pitch is ever thrown (when they’re exchaning line up cards), “keep it clean boys or I’ll toss you immediately”, maybe this would not have happened.

Well, OK, granted, the interim manager...

...should have pulled Castillo from the game long before things got as bad as they did. But these things have a way of escalating very quickly and unexpectedly. I can’t imagine anyone could have predicted Castillo would do what he did.

I can see how Sandberg is somehow tangentially responsible here, but I still don’t think there’s much he could have done – from a distance – to prevent the brawl from getting so far out of hand. Obviously, the organization needs to step back and re-evaluate how it deals with on-field rivalries like this.

You can see in one of the videos....

The look of shock on Carmelo Martinez’s face after Castillo threw into the crowd. There is no way that anyone expected that.

Obviously the situation should have been dealt with after Castillo hit the Dayton player in the head, but I agree that this thing got really ugly really fast. To pin this on Sandberg is beyond absurd…

Yeah, and after reading...

...Josh77’s Minor League Wrap, I now realize that this all happened in the first inning. Castillo lasted only two-thirds of that inning before the brawl broke out and he was ejected and arrested. I assumed this whole dispute brewed for a while before it exploded. That wasn’t the case – the fight broke out very, very early in the game.

I’m really not sure what more the interim manager could have done to contain the situation besides perhaps exercising a little more self-control himself. And the only way you could really blame Ryno for anything here is if he had some prior knowledge to a potentially violent rivalry between these two teams.

I think how a team behaves in general

is a reflection of the manager.

Do I think he gets dragged down with this? Absolutely not. But I do think the bullseye is on the Chiefs now.

This game was completely out of control before the fight.

The Dragons pitcher hit Nate Samson in the top of the first. The Chiefs were angry about this (it was the fourth Chief batter hit in three games) and I’m sure they thought it was intentional. Castillo then beaned a Dragon hitter in the bottom of the inning who had to be taken to the hospital. Then he hit second batter. He also collided with Chief second baseman Gian Gonzalez trying to make a play and Gonzalez broke his leg. (That obviously was an accident, but I’m trying to recreate what Castillo is thinking about.) Then a Dragon baserunner took out Samson at second base with what the Chiefs thought was a dirty play. That’s when the argument between the managers broke out—and the rest is history.

The minor-league umps were way out of their league here. There should have been multiple ejections before the fight started, and then there wouldn’t have been a fight. Not that I’m blaming the umpires, but I am saying that this place was a powder keg and if there is a player that is already a little unstable, the fuse can be lit.

The minor league managers were also out of their league. They should have seen something like this developing and headed it off. I actually think Martinez did see it and that’s why he was arguing. What he didn’t see was Castillo was in a very bad place at that moment and should have been removed from the situation.

by Josh77 on Jul 25, 2008 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just to clarify...

The collision resulting in the broken leg was between two Chiefs (Castillo and Gonzalez), right? Dragons had nothing to do with it, other than of course, hitting the ball into play.

When I first read reports of the story, they made it sound like this occurred on the basepaths and it was a Dragon who got his leg broke, thus adding to the tension.

Obviously it was an unfortunate accident, but I don’t see how it contributed to the pre-melee tension. I mean, I’m sure Castillo didn’t try to break his teammate’s leg, but frankly, based on what I’m hearing about Castillo’s attitude, I don’t think he was that distraught over it that it influenced his following actions.

Yes

The injury was between two Chief players. The Dragons had nothing to do with it.

I wouldn’t be so sure what was going on in Castillo’s head, other than it wasn’t good. I think it is completely possible that the injury added to the bad place he was in.

It's been said before...

but Castillo has to be done with baseball, at least with the Cubs. There are a number of reasons: he seems like a bad person, he could have killed someone, he’s just a crazy ass. Pick one and release him, and hope MLB bans him. But the Cubs should be out in front.

The crew chief/HP umpire should be suspended for a LOOOONG time as well. No way Castillo should be in the game after 2 bean balls, a retaliation slide, and another up and in pitch. I realize the brou-ha-ha started right after the last up and in, but Castillo should have been snug in the Dayton Days’ Inn by then.

Christensen's coach advised

his players to throw at/around guys in the batters box in warm ups if it appeared they were timing the pitches. It’s only a brush back if the guy is in the box. My point is that the act was on someone elses watch.

As for Ryu, while a despicable act, it is a bird. Castillo injured an innocent fan.

Neither of these acts are comparable to what Castillo did. I’m not predicting the Cubs keep or release him, just saying these two other acts cited aren’t related.

I talked to My friend who is an trainer-intern with the team about this today. He wasn’t at the game because it was at Dayton but he did say that he wasn’t surprised. Apparently Castillo’s nickname is “The Animal” and the story (whether or not it’s true, he said he didn’t know) is that the Cubs scouts originally found Castillo throwing rocks at a Coconut tree to get coconuts to fall to the ground.

If the game goes down ..

.. if the Cubs don’t call it off out of shame, I’m certain Ryne will be there with a firm hand there.

But frankly, he set a tone with the suspension earlier this season for the same thing .. and the pugnacity of the players, along with minor league delusions of invulnerability, was primed to blow.

Of course, with advance ticket sales of 30,000, the collective Cubs conscience can be well anesthetized.

Castillo is an animal. He should never be allowed back in a Cubs farm team uni and probably won’t be .. unless he starts pitching like a young Luis Tiant. The Welcome Wagon does run in the Dominican Republic.

This incident should have no impact on the Road To Wrigley game being played.

DEROSA: How did it feel when you're sitting in Baton Rouge and it came across the ticker that Mark DeRosa had just signed to play second base with the Chicago Cubs.

THERIOT: In all honestly, when I saw it, I really felt like punching you right in the mouth and or breaking your leg.

I just won't watch it if it's played...

... it should be canceled.
