I don't understand
when I pitcher gets a win or doesn’t. Can someone explain?
What doesn't kill you makes you stranger -- The Joker
It's the pitcher of record when the team got the final lead of the game.
A starter must pitch 5 innings to qualify for a win.
If the pitcher has the lead
after 5 innings pitched, he qualifies for the win, after that, it’s a scorekeeper’s decision as to who gets it.
must be the pitcher of record...
throw 5 innings with your team leading and not give up the lead….or your team scores the go-ahead winning runs in the inning in which you pitched a majority of the inning.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.
by santoswoodenlegs on Jul 25, 2008 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes after I say, all I care is the CUBS getting a win
Now a starting pitcher gets credit for a win IF
They pitch 9 innings and their team wins
OR
They pitch 5 innings and when they leave the game their team holds the lead and win
A relief pitcher gets a win if upon entering the game when their team is losing or tied and their team takes the lead in the succeeding 1/2 inning and holds the lead for the win
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
One caveat though
If the pitcher was the pitcher of record… and leaves the game with a tie (by being pinch hit or run for) and his team goes ahead, then that pitcher shall qualify for the win.
Thanks very much
I’ve scratching my head over this for some time
What doesn't kill you makes you stranger -- The Joker
I think I'll take the 6 IP, 1 R, and 6 Ks (not the 6 BB though) anyday, wins are out of the pitcher's control, anyway

Link to rule here
10.20 Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
(a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
(b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces); or
(c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings.
No more than one save may be credited in each game.
"WGN, Channel 9 Cubs Baseball, Excitingly, Importantly, Dramatically Yours." - Jack Brickhouse
But I know you can blow a save in the 8th inning, whether you finish or not...
So what about the 7th?
you can blow a save at any time....
provided it is a save situation, and you give up the tying or go ahead run.
