Josh Johnson is the guy who Joe Girardi, then Marlins manager, brought back to pitch on September 12, 2006 after a long rain delay; Johnson went on the DL not long after and missed most of last year and came back only two weeks ago. He has never started vs. the Cubs, but did make one relief appearance on April 24, 2006, where he blew a save by serving up a three-run HR to Jacque Jones.

Ah, memories. Ain't they great?

Ryan Dempster, an ex-Marlin, has never started against his former team. He's 1-1, 3.00 in 10 relief appearances vs. Florida, and Luis Gonzalez is a particular tormentor (10-for-18, .556/.636/.944, a double, 2 HR).

Today's game is on WGN, as the Cubs attempt to even up their record on the "TV You Can't Ignore" station. Also see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

Haha...

They are really not very good at baseball…

They probably shouldn’t have drafted Matt Bush because he was “sign-able…”

Worst pick ever?

Making the assumption that he’ll never see the major leagues, the only others:

1966 Steve Chilcott/ NYM

Probably

He was a reach at short and I read somewhere that they’re converting him to pitcher. Best of luck with that.

Guys that were on the board when Bush was taken include: Justin Verlander, Homer Bailey, Jered Weaver and Stephen Drew.

A team should always, regardless of expense, try to draft and sign the best player available. Investing 3 million a year for 5 years into a prospect is a far better use of limited resources than throwing 5 million a year for 3 years at a marginal big-leaguer.

not to mention

Wade Townsend (though he’s due for surgery), Billy Butler (!), Phil Hughes (!!!), Hunter Pence (who was drafted out of the 1st round), and Blake Dewitt.

that was a hell of a draft. with Matt Bush at the top of it…

Dustin Pedroia was a 2nd round pick for the BoSox in that draft

He was drafted as a SS from Arizona State.

Eric Patterson was an 8th rounder. /duck/

Hey, at least he made the show, briefly.

Gallagher starts again today

he’s 1-0 in 2 starts with Oakland so far w/ a 3.00 ERA.
Murton is hitting somewhere around .125 now

Murton

had an ok start. I wonder what happened…

’’If somebody had told me we were going to lose Soriano for eight weeks, lose [Carlos] Zambrano and Kerry Wood for a couple of weeks apiece, and then at the same time lose [Reed] Johnson, and then when we played the American League not have a DH [then-injured Daryle Ward], and be in first place by two games, I’d tell you we were pretty fortunate.’’ Lou Piniella (7/23/08)

Murton and Brown platoon in LF

with Matt getting 6 out of the last 9 starts.

Cust is now the everyday DH. He was sharing LF duties with Brown.

Shawn Abner and Al Chambers. what career they had in the majors was brief and very undistinguished. Bullington also only made it through 18 innings in the majors before he got released, so he’s up there too.

Outside of that, this will be the everyday lineup if there is one expressed today.

Edmonds knee is okay, Soriano playing in LF, Fukudome in RF, DeRosa at 2B or will Lou rest him today?

either DeRosa, Theriot or Ramirez will get the day off – maybe even (gasp!) Lee—due to the day game after a night game, and the red-eye flight the night before…..

And the braniacs that run that team

predicted “90 Wins.” Now, even Greg Maddux doesn’t care. He said in the paper yesterday, “I don’t like losing, but I still like to pitch.”

Maddog’s flame has flickered….out.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Jul 25, 2008 11:45 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He hasn't won in two months

I know that wins and losses are a terrible way to measure a pitcher’s success, but it still must be upsetting to a pitcher of Maddux’s caliber to be in such a situation.

"Your eyes can decieve you. Don't trust them." Obi-Wan Kenobi, the first sabermatrician...

Want to See Maddux Get to 355

355 wins would put him past Clemens on the all-time wins list. Getting #351 has been a chore for Maddux and those anemic Padres. 355 wins would not be a record, but I can’t see anyone ever getting that many wins in the future as a major league pitcher. I’m glad he got 133 of those wins as a Cub. I know we wish he had stayed with the club longer.

After further thought on the issue, I feel if the HoF and the player agree about what logo should go on the player’s cap on the plaque, that logo should certainly appear on the plaque. If the HoF and player disagree about which logo should go on the plaque, no logo at all should appear on the plaque. I think that would show some respect to the player’s wishes without inviting Wade Boggs like situations coming up that involve financial incentives to pick a certain logo to go on the cap.

I know Maddux may want to go into the Hall as a Brave anyway. For some reason, if Greg disagrees with that, then no logo at all should appear on his plaque in Cooperstown.

by chilango2 on Jul 25, 2008 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No

I realize that was probably a rhetorical question. He has a Red Sox cap on his plaque. I think he should have had the option of having a Red Sox logo or no logo at all on the cap. I doubt many players would choose the logoless cap option, if it existed. In the end, if the logoless option existed, most players would have logos on their caps that the HoF would want, anyway. BTW, I noticed Wade Boggs was wearing a Yankees cap at the All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. He wanted to appease the NY faithful.

Dawson In As An Expo?

If he gets inducted, I imagine he’ll go in as an Expo. That may be what the Hawk wants, anyway. If Dawson disagrees with that, then the Hall should allow him to have a logoless cap on the plaque. That would force visitors to look below his picture to see the teams for which Dawson played.

Well, in all fairness...

...he’s still pitching relatively well. Sure, his ERA is still a little high at 4.18, but if you go with FIP (which I believe most stats people prefer over ERA) that drops to 4.00. His WHIP and BAA are also very respectable at 1.27 and .275, respectively. He’s just getting no run support and the Padres as a team are clearly in a death spiral.

Samardzija stictly in the pen

so Gordo’s speculation about him starting was just that. According to Sullivan.

My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

well that makes much more sense

But if/when maybe Marquis finds a team wanting…..they have a capable young arm

With Samardzija ascent to major league level I thought I would say the following:

He is 8th on this active roster brought up by the Cub organization to their MLB entry, and 19 out of 40 on the MLB roster, (2 on DL).

The llist includes: Zambrano, Marmol, Marshall currently up now along with Samardzija, (Wood and Guzman on the DL), , plus Soto, where 4 are All Stars, on top of Theriot, Fontenot (acquired) & Cedeno. Down on the farm although contributors are Ascanio (acquired), Hart (acquired), Hill, Petrick, Pignatiello, Wuertz, Hoffpauir, Fuld, & Pie
